DPHue & Four Reasons: FR wins for toning; DPHue wins for color saturation
Update: After not using this for about 7 months to let my hair settle down and to gradually cut off a few inches at a time (I cut my own hair now too), I tried this mask again this morning as my hair was just looking blah and I don't want to go to a salon for color. To experiment, I just dampened my hair, then applied a good blob of this to work into my hair, put on a shower cap, and left it on for about 10-12 minutes. The result is beautiful. Natural. Gave my hair a boost. It very slightly colored some of my greys (I don't have a lot, maybe 20-30%, if guessing) and since my greys are scattered about here and there, it made them look a bit like highlights! My hair is shiny, soft, and has some body. Yay! I'm going to next time try leaving it in for maybe 20 minutes and see what happens. But likely 15 minutes will be just right. Also, I read it is safe to use 1-2x a week - I may try a few times a month, but every so often use a clarifying shampoo so there is no build-up in my hair. LOVE IT! Increasing my 4 stars to 5. DPHue may still win out for saturation but I still like this FR chocolate color better. ------- I usually use DPHue for a color conditioner but tried this Four Reasons since it was on a Prime Deal sale. Hair issue: I had my super baby fine medium brown hair colored on impulse and the stylist made it too 'warm' - as in it looked a little too gold toned and almost brassy --I tried to like it as the color was done very well using Aveda products, but the gold/reddish tone is what I'd said I did not want. I went back to the salon about 2 months later and she said she could put a toner in it and it would cost around $30. Okay, I spent a lot on the color that I didn't like but I figured $30 more to tone it down would be a good idea. However, she put in the toner and it was in my hair for less than 5 minutes--maybe 2 or 3--before she rinsed it out. Okay. $30 for 2-3 minutes of toning, or I could spend around that much for color conditioner that I can use for months! Lesson learned. Both Four Reasons and DPHue condition the hair about the same--if you have super baby fine hair as I do, then you'll be okay with the conditioning aspects. However, if I leave the color mask on for a little longer, I'd condition before or after. If you have dry hair or coarse hair, you may want to use a separate conditioner before or after. DPHue deposits a deeper color - their cool medium brown was darker than this chocolate brown. I like the shine and deep color that DPHue gives me, but it was a little too dark and their light brown was too light. This FR chocolate brown seemed to be closer to my natural medium brown hair color, and as well worked to tone down the hair color I didn't like after the toner my stylist applied began to wash out. I did worry that FR's chocolate would be too 'warm,' as in reddish, which is what I didn't want. However, it didn't go "gold brassy reddish" like the color the stylist applied and instead was closer to my brown that naturally has some warm tones to it. There's a difference between warm pretty brown with some warm tones and the 'gold-reddish' tones that can read brassy in certain light. So I was fine with the warm chocolate brown tones this FR gave my hair. DPHue stained things (my hands, whatever it touched) a lot more than Four Reasons. Likely because DPHue is a semi-perm mask that applies deep color and this FR is a toning treatment that also deposits some color. I didn't have as much staining on my hands with FR, and FR washed away from my hands easier than with DPHue. According to what you need either DPHue or Four Reasons will work: if you want a deeper longer lasting color that even colors some greys, then DPHue is the better choice. If you want to tone down a color that looks too gold or brassy, then Four Reasons does the job well but it won't cover grey very much at all. I like DPHue's color saturation better and for the greys I have, DPHue covered them better by a long shot, while FR chocolate brown doesn't look as harshly dark and worked more to tone out those brassy tones. But once this tube is empty, I'll likely experiment with DPHue colors again to find the one (or ones, as you can mix them) that works with my hair for more color saturation. DPHue wins in the color saturation area, especially grays. But Four Reasons wins in the toning area without making my hair too dark. If you use as directed - not too often, etc - you can use color depositing conditioners to keep your hair looking rich and shiny and beautiful without having to go to a salon (where the prices are becoming ridiculously expensive!). Unless you have a lot of grey that you want to cover, these conditioners do the job very well.

Great mask with rich color
I really liked this color mask. The shade turned out deep and vibrant, exactly what I was expecting. The texture is smooth and easy to apply, spreads evenly, and doesn’t drip. After using it, my hair feels softer, looks shinier, and more well-maintained. The scent is pleasant and not too strong. I would definitely order it again and try other shades.

Meh.
There are things that I like and don't like about this product, so it lands at "meh." It is higher quality than lower priced items. The color is what I expected. It worked for two washes on my hair (so a little too pricey for me). My hair is super dry, so I had to use a LOT of the product just to distribute it through all my shoulder-length hair. It did not distribute evenly. There were gaps of missing color. I tried but it was so hard to distribute through my hair.

Leaves hair soft and shiny, color is true to description
This leaves your hair feeling so soft and with a nice shine. I had hoped this would help cover gray, but it does not, but it made my gray hair almost startlingly shiny. I have very long brown hair with lots of blonde highlights and this did a good job of adding a warm brown color and the color label is accurate for the different levels of color. After reading the reviews, I did find this much easier and more effective to apply and comb through completely dry hair, starting with the lightest hair first. I would definitely leave this product on at least 15 minutes, 25 if you are really looking to intensify the darkness. This is not a product that is going to harm your hair and I think would be most effective on someone without gray hair looking to add shine, a little color, and moisturize hair. I am ordering a second bottle. Definitely less expensive than getting a salon gloss. You do not have to wear gloves, but I did the 2nd time I used it.

Washes out the next day
Spend the extra money and buy dpHUE. The first time I used it I followed instructions, 20 minutes on damp clean hair, and there was no effect. The next day I left it in for 40 minutes on dry hair then rinsed it out. It looked great for 2 days until I washed it with a color safe shampoo and it all washed right out; there was literally no color left in my hair all. So if you want something SUPER TEMPORARY this might be the right product for you, but if you want your color to last longer than 1 day, go with dpHUE.

It does work but it is expensive
Pros: It does work Vegan and is probably more gentle. Cons: Although not a real dye as such, it will stain your bathtub The price: Rather expensive according to me Conclusion: Rather expensive. Look around on Amazon for similar products for half the price.

It works better if you heat it!
I admit I was very skeptical about this, but it works well! It even covered my gray hair. Let’s see how many washes it holds! But one important detail, I used an electric heated hair cap for 30min. I believe without that it wouldn’t cover the gray hair. If it stays like this for 2 weeks it’s worth it. I sometimes use Surya Henna and it’s great but it’s the same price and very messy. This product is not as messy as henna. If you don’t have an electric heated hair cap just use your blow hair dryer to heat it.

Great solution to grays and regrowth
Great solution to regrowth and blending in grays! I applied shade 17 Chocolate as one would do with a mask - on top of a head, soaking all hair and with hands, although I used protective gloves as skin gets painted immediately. I kept it for 25 mins, instead of 5 written on the tube. Next time will apply it like a hair dye - section by section, with a brush and leave for 40 mins. The coverage is good, I'm happy with the overall result - it blended the regrowth line and grays really nicely, although the top of the head, where the majority of the dye was, got more colour than the rest, but that's my oversight, not the product's. Now that I know how it works, I will also try the darker colors 17 and 12, as I was originally after a colder shades, but was hesitant to end up too dark.

Doesn't work
I'd give it 0 stars if I could. My hair takes on colour really well, I followed the instructions, even re applied and left it longer than supposed and still no colour seen. It's just a glorified and extremely expensive conditioner. Don't buy, spend your money on something that actually works instead. Straight to the bin it goes.
