Zog's real name is Frederick Charles Duke III. He grew up in Orange County, California, where he also surfed. In the early 70s, he opened a small surf shop in Goleta. In the building next door, the chemist Nate Skinner worked. Together with him, he sat in his head to create the perfect surf wax. For a year, Nate and Zog experimented with the wax.
