BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed coming-of-age story of growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. It is a place where harmony co-exists with adversity, especially for three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube), an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who aspires to a brighter future beyond "The Hood." In a world where a trip to the store can end in death, the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne) who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home, and retaliation seems the only recourse. FRIENDS
An often harsh coming of age movie directed by the now late John Singleton set in a largely African/American dominated suburb in L.A. The film tells of how 10-year-old Tre Styles (young - Desi Arnez Hines II -older Cuba Gooding Jr) who has lived with his mother is sent by her to live with his father Jason "Furious" Styles Jr. (Laurence Fishburne) hoping that her son will grow-up using his father's standards as a guide. At school, Tre reunites with friends Doughboy (young - Baha Jackson -older Ice Cube) along with Doughboy's half-brother Ricky (young - Donovan McCrary -older- Morris Chestnut) and friend Chris (Young - Kenneth A. Brown- older - Redge Green) Seven years have passed, the boys now young adults. At a barbecue, Darrin (Doughnut) celebrates his release from jail along with his brother, Chris who these days is wheelchair-bound after becoming paralysed from a gunshot wound, along with several other friends and Tre who has remained close to Doughnut, Ricky and Chris though following a more responsible path in life. These are the days of learning about life, relationships and indeed further education prospects. Doughnut a leader as he always has been lives on the edge of the law, Ricky, Chris and friends a part of his set-up, Tre is not a part of any criminal activities. There is a neighbourhood rival gang who would like to take over the territory from Doughnut, a rivalry that would cost lives. Will Tre be able to follow his father's example and avoid the trouble that's coming? The 1991 movie is pretty topical and quite reflective in some ways of today showing really how little things have changed. A good film that perhaps lapses a little at times but as it reaches its climax becomes pretty heart-wrenching. Never seen the film before, not sure how it passed me by all these years The 4K upgrade is in fact pretty good Well worth a viewing

Powerful and moving
This is the standard by which any youth gangster movie should be judged. Moral, moving and utterly compelling, there is not one second of slack in this gutsy coming of age tale of freinds growing up set amidst the squalor and violence of South Central L.A. Lawrence Fishbourne of Matrrix fame is the lynchpin as Furious , father of Trae, an intelligent kid in danger of being swept away by the gang vendettas around him.

Excellent film and very Real!
I am a musician who didn't go to theaters and concentrated on my career. I missed many films. This is one film that reminded me of why there is crack in the inner cities=Reagan, Iran Contra and guns for coke, 20,000 tons a month for 5 years, Attempted genocide against the Black population. See the film "Kill The Messenger." Think about it! During the 1980 Presidential political debates Reagan was asked "What are you going to do about the Racial problem"? Reagan said "In My world there is no Racial problem! Everyone clapped since it was such an ambiguous answer which could have meant that he was going to create Racial harmony but what he really meant was that in his world he had tinted windows on his Limo. In Reagan's world there were also no homeless, no poor folks either. Just him and his rich buddies. In 1980 the inner cities suffered unemployment but by 1988 there was the crack epidemic, Aids and a war zone. That is what I am reminded of when I see this film!

Boyz in the hood
