The short globe of the D lite,Air pilot and little wizard tends to shade your face from the brightness while carrying a lantern. The Dietz No. 80 is however a really good investment against darkness,power outages from storms and used while camping. It is i guess the brightest wick lantern made,even surpassing the D Lite and Air pilot with a much larger flame. You will be pleased with the Dietz No. 80, trying to find a brighter lantern would put you in the propane lantern or pump up type lanterns,however my personal experience taught me during storms,disasters and other calamities,the stores will be emptied of batteries, Coleman fuel,mantles and propane bottles the first day of the power outage. The Dietz Lanterns with a gallon or two of kerosene will take care of the situation without worrying about batteries going dead,or Coleman Fuel getting old or the lack of propane cylinders. If you take care of it it will last a lifetime,buy a few spare wicks put them away and set back and be comfortable. I have bought other lanterns and they leaked so much they are probably a fire hazard.** A: I have one #80 blizzard Dietz lantern. Two Dietz 2500 lanterns......and one number 8 air pilot made by Dietz...none of them leak.....the main problem with leaking lanterns is people over fill them then they will leak around the burner assembly or the air vents. I have never had a Dietz lantern with any kind of leak. **Q: Can you use regular kerosene in these ?** A: Yes its made to use kerosene. Use K1 kerosene, also referred to as water clear, untaxed, undyed, blocked pump, etc.. Do not use road taxed red dye kerosene it will eventually clog the wick. You could use lamp oil in a pinch but it does not wick as well as kerosene and is recommended for wicks less than 1/2 inch wide. What you may notice with lamp oil is after you adjust the flame it gradually gets smaller which means you are actually burning the wick down because the oil is not wicking fast enough. **Q: What is the fuel capacity for this lamp ? The description only mentions 26 hrs on 31 oz fuel, not tank reserve - thank you** A: This holds 31oz of fuel **Q: How long can you safely leave oil in the lamp? And how do you remove it if you don't use it all?** A: I have oil in mine all the time. It does not leak or evaporate into the air. I use it about every three months to see how it is doing. Literally a 5 minute test run. I look at the oil level and just keep it ready for action. I live in a rural area and the electricity goes down now and again, especially during the winter months and storms. I use mine maybe 5 to 10 times a yr for a power outage, but I test every 2-3 months during spring/summer/fall. I have never drained it, or know someone that does as a matter of "storage". I have relied on theses lamps for 50 yrs. I do not know anyone that drains it and stores it, they pretty much handle it like I do. But we do use it for emergencies often enough to not be caught having to set it up, and fill it every time the electricity goes down, that is something you do not want to do during a power outage.
