500 Crochet Stitches is both a stitch guide and a how-to-crochet primer, all in one volume. You get all the information needed to get started, including how to choose yarn and needles, read patterns, work basic stitches, how to check gauge, increase and decrease, join pieces and finish projects and care for your crochet items. The comprehensive pattern library includes 500 crochet stitches, including basic stitches using single and double crochet, trebles, and some new techniques to get the fabric you want for that special sweater or hat. Lace and openwork stitches are a starting point for exploring the airy shawls, and afghans crochet is famous for. Use one of the many motifs to create an heirloom blanket, or mix and match motifs to create a truly unique piece. There are also edgings and trims you can use on your crochet and other projects, including sewn items and knitted ones. Each is fully explained with instructions and accompanied by a full-color photo of a sample crocheted swatch. All swatches are worked in updated yarns, beautifully photographed and accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions. Based on The Harmony Guides , which have been a longstanding and valued reference for handcrafters for more than thirty years, with over half a million worldwide sales, this edition is updated with eye-catching photography and innovative new stitches, but also never forgetting the heritage of the guides. Contains diagrams. Excellent resource.
I just got this book and it is what I wish most needle art books were like. Diagrams are in a dark black ink (colored for color work). Large sized book. Not back-filled with projects. No clutter; each page focused on the work with no fillers like tip upon tip. Itโs straight to the work. Contains stitches for fabric construction, motifs, and edging. I have the hardcover bc it is the only option I can see offered. However, the size of the book makes it about as easy as a spiral bound. The quality is obvious. Only con is the lighter type used in description/instruction. It is the font chosen, too thin for my old eyes. This is a great addition to what I have already in both current and vintage titles. I highly recommend!

Itโs a nice, thick book with every kind of crochet stitch you can imagine. Itโs a great reference to have when I need new stitch ideas. Book arrived in perfect condition.

Good info but badly organized
Despite the title, I am still searching for the Ultimate Crochet Stitch Bible. This book has clear instructions and charts for crochet stitches. No author is credited, and it seems to be cobbled together from various sources. The book is divided into sections, shown only by a color tab near the upper corner. The first section. โTools and Equipment,โ covers the basics of crochet hooks and such. Basic stitches are shown, such as slip knot, slip stitch, single crochet, etc. A little information is given on working in rows, but almost nothing here on working in rounds. In this section, post stitches are referred to as โworking around the stem.โ Later in the book, they are called either raised or relief stitches. I donโt think they are called post stitches anywhere in the book. The next section, โStitch Variations,โ covers things like clusters, bobbles, puffs, picots and popcorns. It also includes instructions of crossed stitches that are taken out of context and so donโt make much sense. Then it goes into a very short section (two pages) on Irish Crochet, mostly on what they called padding threads, more commonly referred to as packing cord. The Working from Patterns section explains how to read a pattern and oddly contains another definition of things picots and yarn over, all covered earlier. The next section. โBasic Stitches,โ shows the various stitches for which most people will buy the book. Oddly, there is no rhyme or reason as to how they are organized. For instance, a ridged chevron stitch appears on page 42, sharp chevron stitch on 47, close chevron stitch on page 49, peephole chevron stitch on page 53, crunchy chevron stitch on page 58, simple chevron stitch on page 62, wave and chevron stitch on page 62, raised chevron stitch on page 103, and chevron stitch I and chevron stitch II are both on page 110. Wouldnโt it be nice if the stitches were grouped into a logical order? The assumption again is that all stitches are to be worked in rows. There is no information given for rounds, not even if the stitch would work for rounds. However, that lack of information on rounds seems to be endemic in crochet stitch guides. I find that very annoying as I most often work in rounds. The various stitch instructions also do not mention how to increase or decrease, another feature lacking in every crochet stitch guide. The next section, Motifs, randomly mixes granny squares, circle motifs, flowers and Irish crochet motifs. Some of them are quite nice, and instructions and charts are given for each. The final section, โEdgings and Trims,โ again randomly mixes edgings with trims. I happened to notice that the โcurling petalsโ trim on page 243 has the wrong chart. That same chart appears again, but this time with the correct trim, on page 244. All in all, the book has some good information, but you will have to look for it.

Massive collection of easy to understand stitches!
This book has a wonderful plethora of stitches. I have so many stitches I want to try now. The one downside of the book is similar types of stitches are spread throughout the book. It would be far easier if, for example, all variations of Chevron stitches were grouped together instead spread out over 150 pages. The same is true for so many types of stitches. The disorganization doesn't make sense at all. Other than that, the photos are close ups that are clear and easy to see the details of the stitches. Written instructions are easy to under. I suppose the symbol patterns are good but I prefer written instructions. If you like to crochet, get this book, despite my complaints.

Best complilation of complete crochet
This book has an exceptional compilation of crochet stitches, motifs( granny squares, triangles, circles, hexagons) and one of a kind borders.I have not come across such varied ,practical and beautiful trimmings till now. When the book says 500 crochet stitches,it includes all the above. There are many stitches ideal for sweaters as they will make solid fabrics.and some more that are a bit loose and wavy. There are both charts and written explanations, and the author keeps on giving little tit bits of advice in caption boxes.I have been a huge fan of betty bernard, but this book is as thorough as hers is. Exceptionally glad to have found this book in India. Thanks a lot to Amazon for making world one place to live in the true sense!

Superb book for techniques.
Really love this book. Initially borrowed it as a library book and liked it so much that decided to purchase a copy. It's a must for the intermediate and experienced hooker, but is also good for the absolute beginner. I love the way each stitch is clearly explained alongside a photograph and a symbols chart. Often books tend to have just the written information or the chart. This has both and is therefore very clear. Would definitely recommend it. I have several crochet books but this is the one I most frequently return to for techniques.
