Review: First Impressions - I am an standard consumer, and bought this product as an upgrade from a pair of klipsch s4i that I previously used for commuting. After my klipsch failing multiple times due to probably poor durability (of course, I treat my gear with care), I decided to try these rugged looking on-ear headphones in hopes of a more durable option. I realize that a on-ear headphone is not a complete replacement for an in-ear, and will be looking to replace my in-ear soon, but I wanted to test to see how an on-ear headphone fares as replacement for the roles of an in-ear (which I believe the owner of the v-moda, Val Kolton, originally intended these to be). If all goes well, I intend to make these my primary commuting headphones and keep an in-ear as secondary. I am also new to v-moda and was excited to try them out from the amount of praise I heard. I do not collect headphones or have much experience with many, but I do a fair amount of research before I make a significant purchase, so hopefully my review will give a first-timer's insight into the V-moda XS. -Sound- I listen to mostly EDM, D&B, trance, dubsteb, etc. the bass heavy music, as well as alternative and rock. Again, I am not an audiophile so I do not really obsess over 100% sound reproduction. That being said, the sound is impressive coming from such a tiny device. In comparison to the ATH-M50s or the klipsch s4i (only headphones I own as you might have guessed), these are up to par, and if not, better. In a quiet environment, the sound is clear, crisp, vibrant, and I can feel the gentle waves pulsating through my cranium. As for more in-depth comparison, I think others have done a better review on sound. There is not really much more that can be described better than as experienced in person. -Build- This was one of the main points I looked at when looking for headphones to replace my earbuds. I still think earbuds are awesome, but their durability will always be surpassed by headphones of similar quality range. I wanted something to last me for a while, and provide me with access to good quality tunes for hours of daily use. The V-Moda XS is constructed of metal hinges, kevlar covered wires, and a very flexible leather headband; all components feel like it will last for years to come with proper care. They also have beyond military-level MIL-STD-810G quality standards according to their website. I have no idea what this means, but this is exactly what I want when I am using these daily, in danger of bending or pulling the cord, dropping the headphones on concrete, or zip-lining down a building on fire using the headphones and cables while blasting some Hans Zimmer. -Comfort- Priced at $200, I expect these to be the most comfortable thing to put on my head, and they are. I had used and unused? headphones many times before because they began to hurt my ears after an hour of wear. These come nowhere close. I used these headphones for approximately 4 hours straight, listening to music, and my ears were fine. I believe this is where most of the resources were spent on trying to get the clamping force and cushioning just right in perfect equilibrium, and I believe they have achieved it. I consider my head to be average, and these cans felt natural on my head right out of the box. I have yet to find how long it will take for my ears to begin feeling discomfort, but at this pace, I may never reach that point. -Size- These things are tiny. The case fits into my average size palms, and the cans are cute (lost all my man cred here). I can comfortably throw these in my backpack, not adding any bulk or fearing it will break. They conform to my head very well and does not make me look like a Cyberman. I knew that they would be small from the reviews and descriptions, but I was still surprised when I received them. -Noise Isolation- The only complaint I have about the V-moda XS is noise isolation. I knew beforehand what I would be sacrificing isolation for comfort and durability, but I do miss the isolation of my in-ears. As expected of on-ear headphones, the noise isolation is not as good, and although on the average side of on-ears, I wish the XS somehow had better isolation. They seemed to keep the "v-vents" in the design which apparently improves the sound stage, but if it were up to me, I would rather sacrifice the sound stage for isolation. At 50% iPhone volume, I still hear mainly music, but noises such as the rumbles of the bus still penetrate. I was also concerned for the sound leakage as I get very irritated by people who ignorantly blast their music for the world to hear, and I also hate being a hypocrite. There is a good test video on this on youtube by UrAvgConsumer, but from my personal tests, up to 50% seemed like a safe level with a good seal, while more than 50% starts to leak quite a bit, so 50%-75% should be used accordingly to the environment, and well, just never go to 100% unless you're looking to get stares on the bus. In positive light, I will be less likely to miss a bus stop or get ran over. -Price- As of now, the XS runs around $200, and I figure it will for quite some time. It is a lot of dough for such a tiny thing, but considering the amount of research that must have gone into perfecting the comfort, and the quality (both build and sound) of the overall product justifies the price. They also provide a very nice hard shell case which includes a v-strap for holding cords. -Miscellaneous- -Trivial problem, but I wish the cord had a volume rocker. -I love the color orange, but I still wish the cord had been black, since they are going with the low profile/stealth theme anyway -The sliders and the cliqfold hinge clicks. I love clicks. -Would have been nice if the cord plugs could click lock. Did I mention I love clicks? -Matte finish resists fingerprints! -OVERALL- I would rate these at 4.5. Excellent build and sound quality, superb compact form, and indestructible, -0.5 for isolation, so I rounded up and gave it a 5. From reading forums, it seems like v-moda listens to a lot of its fans' opinions, so I am excited for their next iteration. As for now, although still testing, I think these will be my primary commuting headphones. TL;DR: These headphones have amazing sound and build quality and a very compact size. Review: Recommended Purchase - I Purchased the VMODA-XS (Matt black) for myself as a B'day gift, and was a little hesitant about buying them because of there size and also was a little pricey at $170+ retail for a compact design (I picked them up for $148 on special) , I really was not expecting a great deal from these headphones but would give them a shot, guess I was also intrigued with the materials used in the design ( Kevlar reinforced SpeakEasy Microphone Control Cable) and they claimed to have a "nearly indestructible headband"... I felt like I was buying something military grade. I had also read some bad reviews about the design of the headphones over the ear being tight, I had owned the Sennheiser PC 333D and had a similar problem with headphones that felt like your ears where coming together and after 10 or 15 minutes my ears would be burning and I would have to take them off. Review: After having these for a few months now I can honestly say they are one of the best headphones I've owned, I am on the phone most of the day in meetings and they fit snug with no pain after long hours, you can feel pressure where they are pushing in to grip your ear but there is no discomfort what so ever ( must be the memory foam). sounds are superb listening to music and I find myself looking behind me when I watch movies as the sounds are all around you. When you open the case the first thing you see are the nicely folded and placed black shiny metal headphones with the cushioned ear pieces and what appears to be leather trim and on the top shell there is a small loop that has an orange kevlar coated headphone / Microphone cable. I also bought the VMODA boom pro gaming mic ($31) and is a great compliment to the headphones, really turns them into a full functional headset ( boom Microphone will not fit inside the case) . Pros: - Noise isolation is superb - Excellent Highs , mids and lows the base and trebles come across well balanced and have an all round great sound to them - Sleek design and very solid structure, headphones fold up very securely, when you open them up you can hear they lock in nice and tight with no play at all - Nice cushion pads ( Memory Foam Cushions) around the ear, they are good for hours of listening ( my ears have yet to hurt from wearing for long periods of time) - Excellent hard shell case that clips onto your bags for easy access - VMODA Boom mic a must if you use Skype or other online chat applications Cons: I am Yet to find any, maybe if you have an abnormally large noggin you may run into some problems but then you would not be shopping for these I would highly recommend these Headphones and if you find your experience is similar or different please share.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ almost great, but not quite

i bought, and returned these 2 weeks ago...i'm not someone who pretends to hear things i don't really hear, but my impression of these is based on 3 (mobile) different headphones and 2 iems i use a lot ( yeah yeah iems are not headphones, different soundstage, i get it ) ...the headphones/iems that i have used for a long time and that i know well with certain types of music are: dt1350 by beyerdynamic, sennheiser momentum on ears, grado rs2i, ety e4's, and the criminally underappreciated brainwavz S1 ( which have to be one of the best vaues out there, what a spectacular in ear )...anyway, to my ears - and sticking to more of a mobile situation - i will just focus on the vmodas vs. the sennheiser momentum on ears and the dt1350's ...i spent almost a week comparing these 3, i used my fiio x3, with hi rez tracks from hdtracks and my own ripped flac files using dbpoweramp. in the end i decided to send the vmodas back...while i have to give them a 6 stars out of 5 if i could, for the build quality, not to mention the sex appeal, i do think they are the weakest of the 3 ( again comparing the xs to the dt1350 and sennheiser momentum on ears ). surprisingly, i found the bass on the vmodas to be almost floppy - NOT repeat NOT saying it was floppy, but it's darn close. the sub bass is there, which is nice - i am SOOOOO sick of headphones and iems with that phony emphasized bass with non existent sub bass - so i give kudos to the vmodas for the sub bass, however it is not as tight and punchy as the dt1350s. i find the sennheiser momentum on ears to be superb for 50s west coast jazz, which i focus on a lot, but for progressive stuff, i prefer fast, clear phones, more along the lines of my grados. to my ears the dt1350's have the best of both worlds, superb, i mean just superb bass, sub bass, great mids and clarity and great on the treble. the big drawback of course, is how poor their comfort is, until you get them broken in, and until you get used to them. the vmodas crush the dt1350's in comfort and build, but the dt1350's take the prize in sound to my ears. another odd thing though about the vmodas, was for me, the fit. i found them to be super comfortable, but they weren't tight enough for me, they slid around on head a bit much, and i would say i have a pretty average size melon lol. i spent a lot of time listening to, specifically, porcupine tree discs and peter gabriel disks, with all 3 headphones. i even compared them quite a bit playing them thru my aune T1 and comparing them to my jewels, my grado rs2i's...no comparison there, the grados play porcupine tree thru my T1 like nothing else....the S1 and ety 4's are such different animals there is not much point in comparing them, other than to say that the S1's are a truly spectacular value in iems's - why they are not winning a bunch of awards is beyond me. anyway to sum up my rambling, i like the overall sound of the dt1350s much better than the xs, i like the bass and treble response better on the senny MOE and the dt1350s, i think that both the dt1350s and the xs's have superb mids, beating out the senn MOEs to my ears for mids. it really bothers me how loose i found the bass to be on the xs's....not bad, NOT saying that at all, but certainly not as tight as the dt1350s nor the senn MOE's.....do yourself a favor, and get a hi rez player like a fiio or ibasso, and listen to high rez versions of porcupine trees' disc 'in abstentia thru some dt1350s if you have a chance...nirvana
