Where is this product manufactured? it says "made in germany" but other haba toys very specifically say designed in germany and manufactured in china.

This product is manufactured in Germany just as the title indicates. Any HABA product that says "Made in Germany" is manufactured there. HABA has introduced a comparable line of lower priced wooden toys as an alternative to many of their "made in Germany" items. From the manufacturer: "HABA maintains a wholly owned facility in China. Our employees regularly visit and inspect our partner suppliers and hold them to the highest quality standards and working conditions. Prior to market placement, the safety of the materials, the engineering process, the mechanical endurance testing and the actual use of our products are all tested and documented by independent, third party testing institutes. " The German items are still produced and available for sale, but the lower price points are attractive to many as well. This particular item is definitely Made in Germany and does not have an alternate offering.

I only looked quickly before passing it on to the actual recipient, but I would say no more that 2" square.
