How does my vehicle’s AC system work?

The AC compressor pressurizes refrigerant gas, which moves to the condenser. The gas releases heat, condensing into a high-pressure liquid. After cooling, the liquid passes over evaporator coils to cool the air as it is blown through the vents.

What are the signs the system needs service?

Common indicators of an air conditioning system in need of service include warm and/or weak airflow through the vents, frequent on/off cycling of the system and a strange or musty odor.

Is the puddle of water under my car a sign of AC problems?

Not necessarily. Condensation typically builds up on the AC evaporator and the water is drained at the bottom of the vehicle. That’s normal, but a larger puddle combined with reduced AC performance could indicate a problem.

Does low refrigerant mean there’s a leak in the system?

In most cases the answer is yes. AC systems in older cars will experience refrigerant leakage over time, but a later-model vehicle that needs continual refrigerant recharging typically indicates a leak.

Can a new cabin air filter improve AC performance?

Yes. A very dirty or clogged cabin air filter can reduce the airflow of the AC system, reducing its cooling efficiency and making the system work harder than normal. Periodic cabin filter replacements help the AC system keep its cool.

Cheap insurance and easy enough to install

24 year old RAV4 A/C is back to life. I had a hard line form the condenser to the drier rub/wear through (the dryer bracket is long gone which is contributing to the line rubbing against part of the radiator support). I wish this came with a new bracket (worm gear hose clamp not really cutting it), but otherwise.. best practice to replace the drier since the system was open for a while. The item came well sealed.
