The Tudor period was dominated by King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. The houses still standing from that time are typified by black and white timber framed buildings and rambling rows of quaint cottages around a village green. This book explains the rich range of domestic houses built during the era. There are five separate sections, which deal with social change; structure and materials; styles and dating details; interiors; and gardens and landscapes. There is also a quick reference guide to identify the use of Tudor styles in more recent times. This is an invaluable, well illustrated guide for anyone interested in the history of Britain's domestic architecture. Review: Small book, large impact - Exactly what I needed for the Tudor-era book I'm working on, so I can sound like I know what I'm talking about. Full house drawings, details, floor plans. Review: Great read - This is a wonderful informative and interesting dateline of who , what where and how the design and construction of these structor began . Very interesting .

Wonderful little guide!
This little guide packs more useful information into 59 pages than most books seem to do in over 100 pages. The writer makes no waste of words and most everything is accompanied by a wonderful, albeit small illustration to drive home the main points. The basic Tudor house is viewed through several lenses; what changed in society to give rise to the Tudor style; what was it constructed out of; the details of the various interior spaces; it's decline and revival and features of revival structures. Were it slightly longer and had great photographs to accompany the illustrations it would receive 5 starts.

Good into to the subject
Easy text; good examples. A few more pictures would have been lovely. Drawings and cutaways are very helpful. Short discussion of Tudor style influence on more modern buildings at the end. The meat is the thematic exposition of exterior, interior and surrounds of the Tudor house, from decor to use. Comprehensive overview for the casually interested.

Prompt delivery & in excellent condition; an easy reference to historic British house styles.
The three 'House Explained' books arrived before the dates promised & in excellent condition. The books are very readable: I'm now onto the second one. Good easy-to-read descriptions of historic British house styles up to the present day. The same comments apply to a fourth book (by the same author) I obtained from a different supplier.

Handy little book
I have a Grade II listed manor house, part of which is Tudor. This is a very handy little book, which gets you started with good initial information. Part of a series of little books on houses through the ages & other subjects. They are an easy, interesting read & a good quick reference guide.
