PR996 Excellent, Excellent, Excellent Product and Support
I bought the PR996 to provide improved situational awareness in my vehicle (not necessarily for the dash-cam feature). I have tried several brands with different camera resolutions and video display sizes and have learned that having a higher resolution camera (like 4k) doesn’t mean a better video image on the mirror (however the recorded video and pics are better). The PR996 appears to be the best in video qualities (color reproduction, resolution, image washout, and update rate), hardware quality, user interface (software), and cameras (for recording). Brightness control is an important consideration when purchasing an always-on video mirror as nighttime use can be blinding – no issue with the PR996. By video washout I am referring to looking up at the video screen and seeing reflections or headlights instead of the video. This can be corrected by pointing the mirror at the driver and downward, or using an anti-glare screen film. The PR996 includes such films and they completely eliminate the washout (the tradeoff is that you won’t be able to look into the mirror and see your reflection, however they can be removed without any damage or residue if you change your mind). Installation is pretty straight forward and with the rear camera power and video signals all in one cable, it’s a clean install. As seen in the product pics, power to the mirror, video feed to the mirror, and GPS to the mirror are separate connections (3 in all). I have no need to use the GPS and the unit works fine without that connection. The unit comes with everything you need; 12V power cord, GPS, SD Card (that actually works), rear camera (with mounting hardware), and front dash-cam (built-in). You even get a gift for registering the product warranty. The gift is actually a useful product accessory (rear camera extension cable, hardwire power kit, or alternative mounting kit). Customer support has been excellent. I reached out with a few questions and had answers the following day. I needed additional anti-glare films and that was received within a few days along with my free gift. I have since purchased a second PR996 for my other vehicle. This needed a firmware update and that, with instruction was received the next morning. The only improvements I may suggest is that the connections be moved to the rear of the camera and not the top. Some vehicles (like the newer Mazda vehicles) have a housing around the stock rearview mirror. The length of all 3 connector plugs is too tall and comes into contact with this housing and as such you cannot mount the mirror in a usable position. These vehicles do not have the standard windshield mounted rearview mirror, so replacing the mirror with one that has a longer shaft is not an option. A second suggestion would be to offer an alternative bracket (like some of the competition) that replaces the standard mounted stock mirror so that strapping the PR996 to the existing mirror is not necessary. Overall, I am very pleased with this model from Pormido. All this for less than $150 is without a doubt the best buy you’ll find.

Awesome Pormido PR996
This is the first Dash Cam I've ever used. Before Purchasing, I did extensive research on dash cameras. I researched the cheapest and most expensive ones on the market and all in between. Then I just so happen to find this gem that replaces your rearview mirror. My goal was to find a dual dash cam that can record front and back. Pormido does this with ease. Now I have confidence and can rest a little easy because if anything happens on the road, front or back accidents, I have video evidence. Pormido PR996 operates on a 12V plug that most cars have. Older folks know them as cigarette lighter sockets. Todays generation mainly uses them for charging their cell phones in the car. The 12V plug that Pormido provides to power the unit does not have any extra ports and it takes up the whole 12V socket so some folks may have a problem with that because you will not be able to charge your phone and power the Pormido at the same time, but there are ways around this. 1. You could buy a dual port. A device that turns one 12V port into two. Not sure how safe it is, but I know they make them. Just Google: Dual 12V outlet 2. There is a hardwire kit sold separately for Pormido to power the unit without using the 12V port. Luckily for me, I have an extra 12 port in the back of my car. I drive a Jeep Renegade and the Pormido PR996 works and fits perfectly. I was worried that the 12V cord would not be long enough because I used the 12V plug in the trunk to power the unit and the cord needs to plug into mirror in the front. The 12V cord was long enough to run power from back to front. This way I am able to keep my front 12V outlet open to charge me and my passenger cell phones. There is another cord that runs from the mirror to the rear dash cam and that was more than long enough. It was way longer than the 12V power cord, and that is to be expected. I was able to install the Pormido in less than two hours. I tucked all the cords away into the trim and that part can be a little tough. Pormido provides a plastic tool to help tuck cords into trim. I ended up breaking the tool while tucking the cords, but I still managed to get the cords nicely tucked away without it. When I was done with the install, it looks like it was professionally done, because there are no cords to be seen. Pormido Mirror uses rubber straps to attach to existing mirror. The unit provides various length straps to be able to attach to any size mirror. The way Pormido designed this unit, from the inside of the car, you can't tell that it is a mirror strapped onto an existing mirror. It looks like the Pormido mirror came with the car. The straps do a great job of keeping the unit firmly attached and there is no shaking or vibration of the mirror while driving. Pormido PR996 kit comes with a 32GB Sandisk memory card, so you can install and record your driving right away. The unit can support up to 128GB cards but I haven't tried it yet. The Menu on this unit is awesome. It is simple yet effective. It doesn't use wifi, and it's not going to connect to your smartphone, but it gets the job done. If you need to show footage to someone (law enforcement, insurance), you need to have them sit in the car so you can playback on the mirror unit, or you need to take the memory card out and playback and/or save on another device. The unit records in TS mode, and can take photos in JPG format. The mirror touch screen responds fast and the unit turns on right away when I start the car. I don't have to wait for the mirror to warm up or start up, it is super fast when starting the car. The mirror goes directly to the rear camera screen when I start the car so I can drive right away if I'm in a hurry. The rear view camera is awesome, it can see really well at night and even if a car is right behind you at night with their headlights, the camera can still read the front license plate if they are close enough. At night, with a regular rearview mirror, sometimes headlights behind you can glare into your mirror and hurt the eyes. Pormido rear camera fixes this, because the glare from headlights can still be seen through the rear camera and into the mirror screen, but they will not be blinding. The rear view camera is really good at utilizing light at night. Even on a pitch-black road I can see the road behind me at night because my tail lights light up the road behind me and the rear camera uses that light, and you will always see a vehicle behind you at night because of their lights. One of the best features of the rear view camera is that it takes away about 97% of your blindspots. You will always pretty much know what vehicles are behind or beside you. But always practice safe driving and double check your blind spots before making lane changes, and backing out, etc. The rear camera is supposedly waterproof and can be attached to the outside of the car. I put the rear camera on the inside of my car using the double sided sticky that came with the kit. It rained this past week and I was able to see clearly even in the rain. The rear camera looks out the back window and someone might have a problem if the window is wet. I have a rear wiper to keep the window clear in the rain so the camera always has perfect vision of the back. I really Love the Pormido because it is not a dash cam that attaches to the front window. The front camera is very discreet. This is not the most expensive or the cheapest on the market. It is a very good unit at a reasonable price. Cons: Only problems I have was the rear camera fell off the sticky. The unit came with another sticky that I am currently using. I bought Gorillaz double sided sticky that I keep in the car in case this other stick tape fails. The plastic trimmer broke but I don't need it anymore since the unit is installed. If you format the memory card, all files, including saved files will be deleted. If you need saved footage for insurance/law enforcement, it is probably best to have another memory card for back up. Don't be like Larry. Take off the blue film tint that is protecting the camera lens when you get the unit.

Great Mirror, Reverse Camera limited field of view
Let me tell you about my experience with this mirror after about 3 weeks of use. Ill start with cons since that probably what you want to know Cons: My biggest con is that when you put the car in reverse, you dont get the wide angle view that allows you to see everything behind you. The outline of the mirror only allows you to see a fraction of the actual field of view that the camera sees. This ends up making me stare at the ground directly below my rear bumper or straight back behind the car but never both at the same time. Part of this because I mounted the camera at the top of my tailgate (on an suv) so it is about twice as high as where car makers usually place their cameras. If you mount it in a traditional location then it would be able to see a much better view for backing up. Second con: Mega glare during the day. You should NOT expect to use the backup camera as the rear view mirror while driving during the day. The glare is ridiculous and just doesn't allow it. I didnt put on the glare screen protector because I dont really think it can cut out that much glare. I use the mirror as a normal mirror when im driving during the day and it works totally fine. At night I turn on the screen because the night vision lets it see better than just looking in the mirror. Going off of this, every time you reverse, the mirror turns on even if you previously turned it off, so then I have to turn it back off as I drive off again. Mirror is wider than my stock mirror and the sun visors bump into it which is annoying because then I have to move the mirror down to fit the sun visor forward, then readjust the mirror, then move it back down to get the sun visor back up, then readjust the mirror again. I have it in a smaller suv so this probably won't be a problem in a bigger car but you could do a quick measurement in between your sun visors to know if its going to interfere. Pros: Install is an install. Its a pain in the ass but not terribly difficult. I used the sticky pad that comes in the box instead of any drilling or screws and it works fine. That was a huge plus. There is more than enough wire to run the length of any car/suv/truck. I have a ton extra that I had to stuff in the head liner. Mirror vibrates a little when I'm stopped idling but its not that bad. Camera quality is excellent (1080p) and is more than satisfactory for a dash cam or back up cam. Camera can see quite well in the dark, much better than I can see normally in the rear view mirror at night. I installed my camera high up at the top of my tailgate. This allows me to have a rear view for the mirror that is at eye height the same as where I would normally be looking out. In hind sight, I probably would have mounted it lower so that I get a better back up view since I dont use the camera for driving.

A Solid Performer for the Price
I have shopped a lot of dash-cams, and watched and read dozens of reviews, but this one jumped out at me as remarkably different with the full width 12" display, as well as for the wider field of vision than many of the other over-the-mirror options out there. I have not been using it for long, but I am the kind of person to update my reviews when things come up. So if you are reading this several months or years down the road and don't see any updates, that is because I still like it! This camera mirror has a very OEM look to it from inside the car and in no way looks or feels cheaply made. (But any over the mirror add-on is still going to look slightly out of place.) The display is clear and bright in daylight, but adequately dim at night. You can either allow it to auto-adjust, or manually change brightness by swiping left or right. I also like that it is a single button push on the bottom to either turn it on or off for normal mirror use, and that is the only button. All other functions are accessed with the touch screen menu that pops up as soon as you touch the mirror. (Trust me on this if you are new to dash-cams. Ease of use has been a fantasy with cryptic menu buttons you cannot read the function of from the driver seat!) I have taken to leaving it on at night. I deflect the mirror slightly downward to limit double images from the display and the mirror simultaneously, and it is perfectly usable that way with video only. Otherwise, the reflection and video combined can be a bit disconcerting. The touch screen is not super-sensitive, requiring relatively deliberate action, but it responds well. Mirror clarity is superb if you prefer to keep the video off. The front camera provides enough angular adjust-ability to allow for various mirror angles and plenty of field of view, reaching nearly completely to the A-pillars on my i3. (I can just see the bottom corners of the glass.) It provides a nice clear 1080p feed with a vertically scroll-able view for live display, though it records the full 1920x1080 format from the camera. It also seems to perform about as well or maybe slightly better than my eyes do at night, and the rear camera is even better - without washing out from headlights. It is definitely an improvement over the OEM i3 backup camera for field of view and resolution. I installed the rear camera inside the rear glass near the top, and that provides a good vantage point for traffic behind, and the touch-screen scrolling provides enough vertical range that I can see down to within a couple of feet of my bumper from there if needed without compromising full horizontal viewing to the rear. (But if you really need a an actual backup camera, I would recommend an exterior mount that allows you to actually see your rear bumper or objects within a few inches.) I also made sure to mount it low enough to be in the swept area of my rear wiper. There are a couple of different options for using the mounting hardware that make finding the right camera angle relatively simple, and for my car, I had at least 6 feet of extra wire that I bundled under the rear seat cushion. If you do choose to mount the camera inside, be sure to avoid sticking the mounting pad over defroster lines, as well as keep the defroster lines out of the center field of view of the camera. You don't want your defrost lines ruined if the camera ever gets removed, and they will show up as a distorted zone in the video feed. A nice bonus is that with warranty registration, Pormido currently provides a giveaway of your choice of 4 different items - including the GPS - so don't order the GPS with this! Just be sure to complete the registration within two weeks of receiving the dash cam. In short, at this point I would not hesitate to repurchase this camera, and I may actually do so for my other car. So long as it proves to be reliable, I don't expect to have to revise this review much.

Great camera system. Perfect for our Nissan NV Passenger van
My family owns a Nissan NV 3500 12 passenger van - it's a great vehicle for transporting multiple children/family members all around town. My one gripe about the van, though, is that the rearview mirror is basically worthless. It looks to the back of the van, and while I can spy on children hitting each other or rolling thier eyes at me or their siblings, it doesn't work well to allow me to see behind the van on account of the multiple headrests and tall passengers. I purchased this cam because it has a big view area on the cam which attaches to the rearview mirror, and it does not disappoint! The install was easy enough as the NV has a spot already designed to mount the rear camera. I hide the wiring along the flooring and purchased a kit to hard wire the power to the fuse panel as opposed to using the cig outlet. There was more than enough wiring to do the job (one of the reasons I went with this brand as the NV is long 20'), and the install was simple whether you put the camera on the inside or outside of your vehicle. The video is clear, and it comes with a glare proof cover. The wife loves the fact that she can now see a wide area when backing the van up, and I don't have to tell you how important that is backing out of the grocery store parking lot, what with kids running every which way & adults updating their social media in the parking lot. My only complaint is the logo is displayed under the clock (pictures in the advertisement did not show this). I have contacted customer support to see if there is a way to remove the PORMIDO logo that is constantly on display. I will update this listing after I get a reply back. Overall a great camera and seemingly of higher quality than similar brands offered (I like the Sony optics). Great picture quality overall (rear view at night is clearer than the front view). Would recommend product to my family & friends.

UPDATE! This marvelous video system does not record accidents! Twice now, no recordings of hits!
23 March, 2022: It seems the Pormido system make beautiful videos of travel yet detects and auto-deletes impacts. Earlier this year, a semi-truck/trailer veered so close to me, the trailer hit my right side outside mirror. I scanned through the videos, no hit. I replaced the 32gB card, that seemed to fix the glitch. Today, I got hit in a gas station. I pointed to the video camera, the event stayed calm. No problems. Yet when I took the micro SD to video editing, no scene. The segment of the hit on my car -- a scene from the previous day on the freeway. Why the transposition of data? I ordered another Pormido for a woman. Amazon has not yet delivered the system. I will return it and order a system from a different company. ( Previous praise of the Pormido video system. ) First, the system is excellent. Second, I drive a Toyota RAV4. Despite the mirrors, there is a blind spot to the left of the vehicle. The wide angle rear camera provides a view of that area. Other vehicles approaching from the left appear first in the video screen, then in my left hand mirror. ( Update: I angled the camera to show more of the left-back blind area. ) However, details: The company should provide a better insertion lever. I had a plastic lever from a previous dash cam. That lever made the installation possible. The cable for the rear camera is far too long and too thick. The thickness and the extreme length made installation more difficult. And the highly reflective plastic of the video screen does make viewing difficult in some situations. However, the video system provides enhanced safety as I travel crowded freeways. My previous dash cam system negated the lies of people who hit me on the freeway. Case settled. And this new video system will win any future case when careless drivers hit me again. ( 23 March, I got hit again. The system did not record the time/scene of impact. )

Doesnt work out of the box updates failed
Updated 10/14/21: I was able to get a replacement. The new one works and the settings allowed to change the settings camera angle and also speed settings. My old unit appeared to have touch screen problems because this one works fine. I didn't update the firmware amd just returned the old one. I may check versions to update this one but it works now. Changed to a 3 star review now. Support is decent until I needed a replacement. Then they responded to my review. I was 100% up front on my request and expectations. I do like the ability to scroll up and down. I also like that it can be always on or go dim unless you use reverse. Touch screen rear views are a double edge sword because you end up with fingerprints all over them and this is no exception. Initial review: I have installed about 5 dash cams like this. This one took longer because of the trim removal amd routing in a jeep wrangler windsheild and tailgate with existing customizations. In a normal vehicle it has taken me about 30-45min. I have tried to get this to work to with no results. I spent about an hour pulling trim, carpet, and hiding wires and wiring up with the hardwire kit and about 4-5 more with support trying to get it to work properly. I attempted a firmware update and that has not happened following their instructions. While the camera works it requires you stop recording to access settings and I am not able to stop recording so no settings. As a result my rear camera is still upside down (required based on my mount) and no way to adjust any settings on the device. Amazon support was decent and friendly if my device had behaved they way it should. It did not. The OEM support was also responsive after the weekend with 4 rounds of emails and responses in less than an hour (they are in china so sunday night here) and tried to help me upgrade the firmware without success. All that and it will record automatically but I am unable to change any settings still. I took video and shared with the OEM. I am properly following their instructions but my unit is a fail. I am hoping to swap it out because I am not ripping the existing one out and just want to swap the mirror. To get it from china will take too long and expensive (their words not mine) so I was asked to return to Amazon which is not what I would like to do becausebI am not pulling all the wiring out. Based on the reviews from others I seem to be a minority but this has been frustrating to say the least and from my experience with this device I would pick a different one as they are a dime a dozen. One note on this for any car with a tailgate and reverse lamps on the side, the reverse wire tap is in the wrong place. There needs to either be more wire or wire from the camera to the connector needs to be about 4ft longer. While the camera wire is long enough to get it where I need it the reverse tap required 4ft more to get back through the tailgate and to the lamp. You are not able to splice the video cable. I also would not bother with their specific hardwire kit. The option to leave it hard wired has a 1in square connector that sits at the top corner of my windshield to adjust the low power shut off...very poor design for a hardwire mirror kit. Most vehichles this will end up middle of the windsheild at the headliner. Any mini-usb hardwire kit will do if it provides enough power The camera connection is mini usb as is the power. This is also confusing and hard to tell when mounted. I have not seen what happens when you plug it in wrong. The 90 degree angle on both of these as well as the gps antenna covers the sd card slot which if you dont plan to removed is not really an issue but for my experince added to the frustration. I am currently looking to swap this out for something different that would work and not require rewiring but I dont think thats an option based on the connectors for the camera. All other units I have installed used 1/8in connectors for the camera and gps. I will update my review if I can get the device swapped out but I dont see it better than 3 stars right now. The video it took was pretty decent but the microphone was muffled and garbled. I could not assess night vision because I cannot get it to function properly.

Get this one.
Absolutely love this back up camera. I have a large suv and the blind spots are horrible. Add tint to the windows and it was almost impossible to see especially at night. Backing up was even worse, and being a truck driver I felt I needed to find an answer to this dangerous issue. This system solved everything. Originally I was going to get a stereo with a backup cam. However, finding this was even better. This mirror allows a full sight picture and more from the rear camera at all times on screen. Blind spots were totally eliminated where the conventional mirror left much to be desired. This is like having someone sitting on the rear bumper giving a full 170 degree view. Once a vehicle reaches the edge of the screen I have sight of them in the side mirrors already. The lighted screen also doesnt cause issues with being too bright at night. The picture is crystal clear. I was truly amazed. The front cam is also a wide angle view that helps blind spots in the A pillars because it sits so far forward of where I am sitting. Once hooking up the reverse function, it worked flawlessly. The parking lines were right on and the system switched over seamlessly. Great setup. Installation was a mid level of difficulty, so if you are not comfortable doing work on your vehicle you may want to get it installed at a shop. I had to run wiring through the rear lift door to where I wanted to mount the camera. The wiring that came with this kit was plenty long enough to reach from the rear to the front with no issues. I had to extend the single wire to get it to the reverse light where I spliced into that circuit, but only because of that specific vehicle. Running the wiring following the present wiring looms was no a bad job after taking off the interior panels. Pormido was excellent with follow up emails, that if I needed any technical assistance, they were standing by. Their communication with me was always quick and very courteous. Navigating the settings was also very easy. There is really no way to mess things up. Once you get your SD card formatted, which you have to do through the menu, you are up and running. If you are patient, and decent with cars, this should be a fairly simple install. The large screen is amazingly clear with a great picture. It has truly made driving my big truck much more safe and enjoyable experience. It will definitely be a added security for my family having our driving recorded in case of the worst. If you are looking for a great camera solution for your vehicle, definitely dont hesitate on this unit! Thank you Pormido!

Great product
I have had this installed for a couple of years now. It has been faultless and reliable. I love the fact that I can see out the back using the camera rather than loosing my vision when my vehicle is loaded. Plus it is always recording back and front. Awesome,

Empfehlenswert !!!!
