Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Product is good (some smudge of script, but OK). Amazon shipping is a problem and needs to be remedied. On the day of scheduled delivery, the truck came and parked just past residence. Then drove away. The package was delivered next day late at night (in our view unethical). We have another affiliate Amazon account. The package was delivered a day late and half ripped and tampered! This has to stop and the driver pulled in and counseled on duty, quality and ethics or reassigned.

BKS Iyengar has a great way of explaining things that are more challenging to grasp. This book was part of a class I am taking and the instructor recommended this version over all other versions. It has a lot of sanskrit and immediate definitions of the word so I do not have to continue to go back to the definitions, but there are definitions for the sanskrit terms as well. Win Win situation. The arrangement of the ideas are falling into line as there is more details in this book than others written on the Yoga Sutras. (I have only read 2 others) I enjoy this book.

Anyone interested in Yoga will need to eventually study and read the " Yoga Sutras" by Patanjali. Iyengar having been taught by Krishnamacharyia reveals his depth and insight as a great teacher and Yogi. In light of his recent passing, we are very fortunate to have this publication available to us. With this book Iyengar continues to convey the depth, significance and importance of the Yoga Sutras. With recent insights and discoveries we now know that it is also very important to study Sanskrit, chant it and be exposed to the sound of the language, as the Yoga Sutras were designed with very specific features through the effect of the language and sound as well.

I love The Yoga Sutras, period. As a Yoga teacher, I have at least half a dozen translations, probably more, and there are hundreds out there. But this work by BKS Iyengar is the clearest, most meaningful, most applicable to modern-day life of any that I study. His wisdom and ability to communicate in English, his second language, shine through his commentaries and point me in the direction of living my life on Planet Earth as a good human being, and finding peace of mind while doing so. A must-read for all serious students of the ancient practice of Yoga.

B K I takes a pretty deep dive into a pretty short religious work. Very deep and hard to understand at times and will need multiple readings to fully understand the philosophy of Patanjali. Overall an interesting read.

BKS Iyengar has left us a pearl of great price here.

Mr. Iyengar's book starts with detailed philosophy behind yoga and the yogic practice of pranayama - breath control and restraint. He sets out, step by step, how to prepare for the practice, including precautions. Accompanied by close up photographs, instructions proceed from basic breath observation to significant breath modifications, from supine to seated practices. He outlines benefits and dangers of certain breath practices. Pranayama is not a practice to be taken lightly, to be played with, but it is one to explore in depth, with curiosity and deep attentiveness. The practice can support and stabilize us in turbulent times.

I am an Iyengar Yoga student and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali was chosen for our book club's first subject of discussion. Everyone in the group was free to choose whatever version they wanted. I read 2 versions and found this one to be the most user friendly, as did many of the other students. The sutras are stated and then a clear explanation is given for each. If you are a student of Yoga, please read this and understand the reason you are practicing. It will change everything.
