The Crooked Road is a 253-mile stretch of highway in southwestern Virginia. This remote area, which is one of the places that gave birth to American music, has been a musical hotbed for generations. The route includes the Ralph Stanley Museum, the Carter Family Fold, the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance Museum, the Blue Ridge Music Center, the Rex Theater, the Floyd Country Store, and the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum. Covering the 10 counties through which the road passes, this guide provides information about the areaโs musical attractions as well as opportunities to enjoy local crafts, outdoor recreation, lodging, and dining. Music lovers will also have the chance to take a piece of the Crooked Road home with them, thanks to the pair of CDs containing 53 examples of the old-time, bluegrass, Piedmont blues, Anglo-American ballads, and Appalachian gospel music that made the area famous. Joe Wilson was a music historian, folklorist, and chairman of the National Council for the Traditional Arts. Raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains, he learned ballads from his mother, guitar from his uncle, and โJackโ tales from a neighbor. He also heard his great-aunt, known to early radio audiences as โCarolina Sally,โ play banjo on his back porch. He has produced 41 large-scale music festivals in 11 states, and was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Crooked Road. In 2001 he was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts. Review: Instructive, educational and fun. - The book and CDs are perfect for what we wanted. Educational, plus nice music and narrative on the CDs. It doesn't matter that the information might be a few years out of date. The book gives enough information that it is easy to know where to look up current details on the internet. Review: Excellent Book on American History In Virginia - Bought this book for my sister-in-law for Christmas she was thrilled to see the history of the region where she lives in print. Great book about a subject that needs to pass from generation to generation about the music history that has been a great influence to our country. I recommend this book to every American who lives history and music.

WOW! priceless resource and great accompanying c.d.'s
I was so impressed when I received my copy of this book that the next day I ordered a copy for my father-in law. This book is a fountain of information for those curious about the history of "natural" and great music from Virginia. I'll be bringing this book along for a bicycle trip I have planned along the Crooked Road and will definately be learning more than I could have imagined now that I have this book.

crooked roadtrip
My husband and I traveled the Crooked Road this summer and this book was our guide. Not only did it help us plan our itinerary and learn so much about the area and it's music, but we really enjoyed listening to the accompanying CD's as our vacation soundtrack. We only ran into a few problems with restaurants no longer in business, but other than that the information was accurate and helpful. I highly recommend going on this road and if so the book is a must!

Excellent guide with great CDs
A great little book about SW Virginia, the music, where to jam, culture, lodging, food, a little history, and best of all the CDs with over 50 songs and tunes with intros by Joe Wilson

Guide to the Crooked Road
This is a great guide to the area of western Virginia that is the heart of music from early America. It points out places for music jams, places to stay and historical sites.

We are planning a trip to this area and this book was very helpful and it was so nice to get the two CD's included with it. I would recommend this to anyone going to the Crooked Road and the price was great.

Good history, but out of date Guide.
I'm not usually one to give a low rating for a product but in the aim to help people researching a similar trip, so much of what's in this book is sadly out of date that I spent a few nights doing a lot of verification, only to keep finding events that have been cancelled, before I gave up and planned my trip using internet resources. The historical elements of the book are good, which is why it still gets three stars from me but if you're planning a trip on the Crooked Road and want to attend events this book needs a refresh badly.
