Brief synopsis of one of Canada's most notorious killers
A superficial re-hashing of one of Canada's more notorious killers. Written in a journalistic style, this read like a slightly longer than usual newspaper article (or perhaps a compilation of contemporary news columns) that was hurriedly edited and meant to be understood by eighth-grade level readers. The explanation of "nature vs. nurture" causes for psychopathy was rather stilted and burdensome, as if someone was trying to sum up a text book article into simpler language, and some attempts were made to correlate this with the killer's upbringing. Fair warning was given prior to the chapter giving a synopsis of the murder and before some crime scene photos for readers wanting to skip the gruesome imagery. There is a chapter which presents the "killer groupies" phenomenon, and the brief book ends with the victim impact statement, which in my opinion was the right thing to do, drawing attention as it does to the victim and his family. This is not a deep or insightful book, but it presents the Luka Magnotta story from beginning to end and leaves readers to analyze for themselves how this deeply troubling story fits into or represents today's social media driven world, or not.

I wasn't expecting anything amazing or in-depth
Don't buy this unless you don't know how to use google. The entire bibliography consists of internet news and youtube references...I wish I could get a refund (I probably could, but it was only a few bucks and I don't have that kind of time. Seriously, there is nothing here that is not readily available from a quick internet search...I wasn't expecting anything amazing or in-depth, but I did expect more than a what basically amounts to a research paper using the internet as the only source....no interviews, nothing revealed that hasn't been on the net for a couple years. Don't waste your money unless you're too busy to spend a couple hours on google. That being said, the author does write decently....it's not a horrible read, but if you've done any kind of internet search on this whole case, you will get nothing new from this book. I would give this negative stars if possible. Seriously, do a google search on magnotta and you will get the authors sources, nothing new to learn here

A chilling read!!!!
This was a very good, well written book. I had never heard of Luka before, but Cara Lee Carter did a great job letting the reader "get to know him.". I've read many true crime books before, but never read about a person that was so arrogant about the way he let the world know he had killed a person. It was disturbing to say the least!

What a sicko!
Cara Lee Carter you did a great job telling this story, and I look forward to reading more from you! Luka was a very sick and twisted individual! How could you do that to another human being? I believe if he wouldn't of been caught, he would of killed more innocent people... He enjoyed it way to much and very much enjoyed the celebrity he got with killing. I look forward to book 6.

Shocking the nation is an understatement in the case of Luka Magnotta; Great read; Highly recommend it!
Shocked the nation is an understatement in the case of Luka Magnotta. Appalled, traumatized and outraged would probably be more appropriate here. And not just Canada. This sensational case is known worldwide and is just as heinous everywhere its talked about. After an international manhunt involving Interpol, this killer achieved what he longed for all his life. Fame. The impacts of his actions are still felt and will be for some time. With the very recent news exposure of his online dating request, Luka just can't seem to stay away. He was addicted to becoming famous and willing to do whatever it took. The author covers this fact very well in the book. She does an exceptional job at researching all the facts of this case and bringing it all together for us. I don't imagine that was an easy task given the media sensation it was and the amount of information she had to sift through. There's lots of background info on Luka's upbringing and mental illness history included; as well as a detailed description of the sadistic video posted on the net (not for the faint-hearted folks). However, the heartrending victim impact statement by Lin Jun's father is something everyone should read and made this book one of my favourite reads this year.Highly recommend it to all my fellow fans of True Crime.

A MUST READ!!
I wasn't familiar with the story of Luka Magnotta before reading this 5th Volume in the Crimes Canada Series! Despite the GRAPHIC WARNINGS in the book description, I'm very glad that I read this one!!New author Cara Lee Carter does an excellent job of telling the story of a man, born July 24, 1982 by the name of Eric Clinton Kirk Newman! Eric's childhood was not the easiest. At the age of 6 his mother would dress him like a girl and even made him wear diapers because of bedwetting! In 2006 Eric legally changed his name to Luka Rocco Magnotta. Luka wanted a life of fame and fortune...(he would eventually achieve one of these)!! He tried out for tv reality shows but was never selected. He also did some pornography films! These were also not his road to fame. Although when you read the book, you will find one film that was posted to a pornographic version of U-tube that helped him achieve fame! In May of 2011 Magnotta committed the horrific murder of Lin Jun.(also known to friends as Justin Lin) A young Chinese man who had moved to Canada for a better life. And life was better for the young man...Until he met Magnotta! Not only did Lukas Magnotta brutally murder Justin Lin, he videotaped the murder and then posted it to the internet!!As I stated before, this book is very GRAPHIC, not only with descriptions but also pictures but Author Cara Lee Carter did an AMAZING job of telling this gruesome story and stays sympathetic to the victim and his family! I hope Cara writes more True Crime in the future!!

Truly Psycho
Great job by Cara Lee Carter. Luka was a sick person with a narcisistic personality. What he did to his victim is truly horrendous. I believe he would have killed more if he wasn't caught

Never expected to order a book about my ex-boyfriend Luka Magnotta lOL
As a former transgender ex-girlfriend of Luka Magnotta, it felt kinda wierd ordering this book. But a very good close friend of mines payed me prior to order this for him for $9.69.Perhaps I should sign my autograph on the book prior handing it over to him. lOLI haven't recieved it yet, but I'm sure he'll like it.I've already lived the experience while we were dating back in 2006.Am I shocked by this ? Yes. Am I surpried by this ? No, not really.I always knew he was mentally unstable, which is why our relationship didn't last long.He told me one day he will become famous, but in reality he's now infamous. Some people are willing to give up there freedom just to get fame.I'd probably read it, just out of curiosity out of boredom. It's not everyday your ex-boyfriend turns out to be a killer.I've done interviews in the past on tv and the newspapers.Update: Read the first few pages in it and there's 2 errors on it.Luka Magnotta dated transgender Nina Arsenault. (False)She fabricated this story just to get attention & fame. The author says he often lived in Los Angeles & New York. (False)These are not facts but just exaggerations unfortunately. Sad but true.

What an awesome book! Really liked the start where it gave ...
What an awesome book! Really liked the start where it gave us an insight into how a person can become a psychopath. Luka was surely one of them. It is good they found him when they did or more lives would have been lost. How sad and pathetic it was the lies he wove about himself all over social media and the attention he craved so badly that he would go to any lengths to get it. As a result a wonderful man lost his life; ensnared by Magnotta. You have to wonder if Magnotta was caught earlier for his other crimes; if his victim's life might have been spared. Thank you for a great read! Read it all in one sitting!!!

A gruesome Canadian true crime story. Well written.
Cara Lee Carter does a great job in telling the story of one of Canada's most horrific crimes. Torturing and killing kittens to murdering and dismembering Jun Lin and distributing his body parts to various destinations through Canada Post, including members of Parliament; Luka Magnotta clearly demonstrates the lengths one will go to achieve fame. This book was very well written and researched. I recommend this to anyone who reads true crime.
