If it was plated, solid, whatever. Just had no idea, and the thought of risking something so precious to chemicals was just not a risk i was willing to take. So I let it soak a couple minutes in ketchup, gently rubbed to clean it off real nice let it dry (it still had severe tarnishing on it but was much lighter). Then this kit arrived today, and i got straight to work. (actually pausing and using the brush while I type this review). Now this item has an indented border frame, which is tiny, i mean tiny. (you can see on the pictures). This brush is getting/has gotten all of the grime/dirt/tarnish out of it. It's cleaned up all of the engraved words, and really looks beautiful. In the first picture you can see the final polishing using the cloth they gave me, (YES THOSE BLACKISH LOOKING STAINS ARE NOT SHADOW, BUT TARNISH!) It went from black and bronzing to a beautiful silver. Can't be happier, (no cleaner was used). P.S don't mind the crappy rope chain, I have it on a rope chain because i never take it off. So you know those human oils are bad and tarnish silver very quickly. The last time I partially cleaned it was several years ago.. (Sorry I forgot to snap a picture of a 'before' next time i'll include one). Update: using google lense I managed to find a clone of this item, this is a vintage piece that has 'silvertone coating' it did not damage that coating. I also used only the items included here, no polish. All those things considered, it worked fairly well for a few minutes work.
