Review: Functional Little Stove - I OffRoad in my Jeep quite often and I wanted to test out a few of the portable stoves out there. This is one that I found a lot of enthusiasm around and decided this item would make my cut. Pros: -Little Weight - Relatively inexpensive at around $20 - Burns almost anything you put in it - Stainless Steel - Assembly in less than 10 seconds - Pieces fit together easily Cons: - A bit flimsy (Base and Pot Stand) - Constant feeding of combustable material - Takes a bit of time to cool down after firing, so you can't use it and move on quickly So I had a chance to test this out recently and compared to other portable stoves that could run you $100 plus. With some caveats, this little stove really performed. The stove come in a net storage bag to secure the pieces for travel. The stove comes in six pieces and can be fitted for wood type fuel or alcohol. Each requiring a different setup. Wood fire setup takes 5 - 10 seconds. The alcohol setup takes about 15 - 20 seconds as more pieces are required. You also have to option of cooking on a grill top or pot stand. (Instructions come with the unit on setup for either wood or alcohol) Pieces the unit comes with - Base - Double Wall Burning Chamber - Burning base - Pot Stand - Grill - Alcohol Tray All pieces seems to be pretty solid with the exception of the base and pot stand. The base is not made of as thick of metal as the rest and the pot stand legs are in my opinion just asking to be broken. But time will tell and I can understand wanting to keep the weigh of this down for hiking, etc. Wood Setup requires - Base, Burning Chamber, Burning Base, Stand or Grill Alcohol Setup requires - Base, Burning Chamber, Burning Base, Alcohol Tray, Stand My first test was Wood Fuel. (Note: this this will burn other solid fuels like Charcoal, Wood Pellets, etc as well.) Alternate fuel may not be a bad option or you will have to keep feeding this stove constantly with little twigs to keep the fire. Its not that bad but it is require attention. I opted to start the fire with twigs and then once I had a good fire going add wood pellets to help feed it. This little stove gets HOT. Once you have a good fire going you can boil water in minutes. However, one draw back is that of course, you are unable to really control the temperature. So this stove is best used for hot drinks and/or quick meals. Extended cooking sessions are not its primary use. For what it is .. it does a great job. Next test was the Alcohol Tray. You can use either Esbit Fuel Tabs or Denartured Alcohol. While these fuel types will last a while longer than the wood feed fire. It is not nearly as hot of a fire. I tested this with my Stowaway Pot (1.6L) I fits in nicely for stowage. It also allows for the storage of additional items like fuel cells or wood pellets, matches, etc. All in all, this little inexpensive stove is quite worth its meager price. An excellently built rocket style fire unit that is light weight that any enthusiast should have in their pack.
Review: Cool Little Outdoor Personal Fire - Worth $20! - It collects soot fast but keeps working. I found it rather difficult to get a fire going the first few times just because I had bad airflow, but when you figure it out, it's incredibly easy, and it seems quite safe (as far as fires go). It's very portable, but MAN, it'll get a good amount of heat going for the right amount of time to cook a burger on the little teeny grill, or roast some peppers, or a hot dog. You'll be cooking parts of your meal separately, but it's so fun and the fuel is free. I find cedar bark and leaves make a good start, then I add small branch cuttings. I have not even used it for camping because I keep it on my patio for at-home, short-term fires. Bonus: ashes are collected for the garden.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how do you add more wood while a pot is sitting on it?**
A: You have to remove the pot to add wood. But, the small amount you will add will let you pick up the pot with one hand, add a few sticks with the other and replace the pot. I have also been able to bring a quart of water to a boil with out having to add fuel.

**Q: will this leave a fire scar on the ground?**
A: It CAN burn tinder-dry debris on the ground, especially if you have to blow on the wood to accelerate or restart fire (VERY common necessity!). It often blackens organic material if not removed first. Best to scrape down to mineral soil before making a fire in the stove. But normally it is very easy to avoid all this - the usual result is nice white ash.

**Q: What country was this made in?**
A: China, but quality is good and costumer service is the best as I had a damage part from the mail, and was replaced quickly and with no problem. They stand up for there product.

**Q: where is it made?**
A: Thanks for your question. Please kindly be advised that this product is made in China.

It is not as efficient as the DYI wood gasifier stoves I made from an empty paint can and Progresso soup can. However, my DYI stove is taller and don't pack as well as this one. This camp stove will NOT get to the pure blue flame state. I'm guessing that's because the height of the double-walled section is about half of the DYI stove. Filled to the max with hickory chips, it burned for about 30 minutes. It is well made and the parts fit together nicely. The bag fits just right. It's debatable whether this is as eco-friendly as advertised. Burning wood releases a lot of smoke particulates. Alcohol stoves may be cleaner in terms of environmental impact. One thing I don't like about wood stoves is that, even when they are burning efficiently, you get black goo all over your pot. In addition, if you want to try to minimize smoke residue, you have to wait until the fire has progressed, which means you have less usable time to heat your water/food. I probably got 15 minutes of heat time out of the 30 minutes it burned. Wood gasification works because of the convection flow that draws air in the top, out the bottom, up the sides, and out the top, interior holes. The wood gas coming out those holes is what is actually burning. One of the down sides of using wood gasification is that you have to use some of the burn time to get your stove heated sufficiently. Otherwise, if you just light the fire and immediately plop your pan/kettle on it, you'll get a lot of soot build up. Since the fire burns from the top down, as opposed to normal fires that burn from the bottom up, that means adding wood on top will also cause a sooty fire. The way I get around this problem is either limit the amount of water I heat up so I don't have to add wood to the fire OR burn a smaller fire to heat the stove up and then fill it up and light it on top so it burns efficiently. My preferences: This stove is too heavy/bulky for my style of backpacking and I don't like what wood smoke does to my pots. Consequently, I decided to use it as a backup stove for car-camping. If I run out of fuel for my other stove or just feel like having a fire under fire restrictions, this will work perfectly. In addition, alcohol stoves need a wind screen and this works perfectly with a Trangia-type stove. NOTE ON STARTING FIRE: Building a fire in this stove is different than most stoves. It's designed to burn from the top down. Fill the stove up with wood debris and then make a fire on TOP. Once the stove heats up, it will start drawing air and wood gas from the bottom, up the double wall, and into the top holes that are pointed towards the inside where it will ignite as a jet. Yellow flame is good. Blue is best. If you don't have a wood gasifier stove and don't want to build one, get this stove - it's cheap and good.
