Review: A Helpful Look at Nonverbal Communication, Even If Some Skills Take Real Work to Apply - Louder Than Words was a really interesting read for me, and it opened my eyes to how much nonverbal communication affects the way people see you โ especially in your career. The book dives into everything from body language to presence to subtle cues we donโt normally think about. A lot of the advice is solid and has made me more aware of how I carry myself in everyday interactions. What stood out to me: The author explains nonverbal concepts in a clear and practical way. There are plenty of real-world examples that make you think, โOkay, I can see exactly how that plays out in real life.โ It definitely made me more conscious of the small things โ posture, eye contact, tone โ and how they can make a big difference in the way youโre perceived at work. Itโs one of those books that stays in your mind when youโre interacting with people afterward. Where it falls short: While the advice is great, a lot of it is harder to implement than it sounds. Some of the nonverbal skills require consistent practice, self-awareness, and even training to fully apply. You canโt just flip a switch and suddenly master all of it. A few sections would have benefited from more step-by-step exercises or ways to build the habits gradually. Overall, though, the book is worth reading if you want to improve how you show up in your career and understand the โhiddenโ parts of communication that most people overlook. The insights are valuable โ just know that turning them into action takes time and effort. Review: Accelerate your non verbal skills to the next level - I love this book for a quite a few reasons but to start with it starts out and sets up the explanation that everything counts, all of you interactions, your clothing, your attention to detail or lack of, and your interpersonal communications skills. In a noisy world with many choices some of yours are made without really understanding why, that also goes for your clients. I read just about every book that comes out on body language and this one is great and not just a rehash of the last one that came out a few months or years ago. In a very stimulated visual society we gravitate to symmetrical beautiful objects or people, and that is a lesson in itself. People also pick up on verbal communication skills just as much as looks, sloppy speaking or pronunciation will also lose a deal. Mirroring physically to gain comfort and rapport is just as important with verbal cues as it is for your vocal tones and words. The book does a great job of explaining how people will make their opinions based on your behaviors and that determines their buying decisions. The section on comfort vs. discomfort is discussed and explained and will give you an aha moment and give you some powerful insight on non verbal communication and is worth buying the book in itself. This book is very well written, thought out and in depth book, I wouldn't say that it is an easy read but more of an important anthology of non verbal communication you need to have in your library because of the knowledge you will gain. There are so many good things in this book that I am sure that reading a few times I could pick up some valuable tips that I passed over the first time. Buy some copies for you sales staff or anybody that talks to your clients. As you read this book you will question how many mistakes you make on a daily basis and find the fixes to change them for the better. So just how much money or clients have you lost in the past year, month or day? You will only know by reading and studying the book.

Informative, but some advice should be applied with caution
I found this book to be very informative and entertaining in general until I got to the part where the author says when you meet a person of Asian descent, you should bow. He thinks it makes the Asian person feel more comfortable. (It could work if you are "surrounded" by Japanese or Korean people visiting the U.S.) I personally feel that it is rather rude to single out a person, and greet in such a way that "stereotypes" the race that you assume that person belongs to. I have experienced this a few times in my life, and I felt very uncomfortable and even offended and hurt. Therefore, I felt that some of the advice on this book should be applied with great caution.

A cop's eye view
Joe does a great job of bringing his 25 years of law enforcement experience into the corporate world. Having had my own 20 year career in law enforcement, I appreciated Joe's acknowledgement that deception is a difficult thing to ascertain on a definitive basis. Frequently you are seeing discomfort not necessarily a lie, perhaps due to the nature of the question asked or the subject being discussed. But, as he so aptly points out, that discomfort can ultimately lead you in the right direction. In the boardroom or in the office, working on the nonverbal cues (body language) you are giving off are every bit, if not more important, than what you are seeing in others. How you consciously use your own body language and the seating arrangement in your office to establish rapport is critical. After my post law enforcement career, I've spent the last two decades in the corporate world. I've put the experience I picked up in law enforcement to good use when working with clients and colleagues, as well as all the great information I've learned from all of Joe's books. One colleague has been wondering for 20 years how I know when he is ready to wind down the conversation after he's stopped by for a visit (his tell is in his right foot). He always is surprised when I know it's just the right time to end the conversation. Drives him nuts, but then he hasn't reads the book! One of the beauties of the Kindle version are the imbedded short videos in each section. This is the first book I have run across that has this kind of content and it's a nice break from the reading.

Essential For Any Business Person, Job Hunter, or Social Networker
This book can do more for your business, both internally and externally, than perhaps any ad could do. This is because when it comes down to it, your business is assessed upon first impressions. Ads or campaigns may draw people to your business, but it is the first impression clients and customers get from their first few minutes of experience within your walls or with your employees that ultimately makes or breaks whether they will continue to spend money or work with you. Joe Navarro teaches you everything from what to wear to how to arrange your office, all in order to achieve the goal you wish to attain, namely a great, successful, and above all, approachable business. Heed his words for though nonverbals may be simple or subtle, they make a difference between a sealed deal and a walk out. This book is especially beneficial to those job hunting. An effective HR employee interviewing potential candidates will know that only 50% of the information you are acquiring from an interview are simply the answers to your questions. You will gain just as much information, if not more from their behaviors. Therefore, those out in the labor market trying to obtain a job would find this book immensely valuable. Overall, this book is essential, whether you are a staunch business man or just someone who wishes to improve their social behavior and effectiveness. It is a must-have.

This is a must read
Whether you have read any of Joe's prior works and know how invaluable his insights are or are learning of him now, you must read this book. If you are employed or if you intend to be employed, this is critical reading. There are millions of people looking for jobs right now and what you will learn from Joe's spycatching days, could be the difference between your resume getting the circular treatment and an offer letter. Over the last ten years, I have read some of the other popular body language and gesturing books; books that focus on nonverbals and the emotional quotient. "Louder Than Words" is light years ahead of any of these, not only in it's insights, but the principles are easy to implement and the payoff is almost instaneous. I have been recommending Joe's books to others for the last few years and have watched as those around me applied what they learned in life and in their professions and they have seen tangible results. Most people will not take the time to read material like this, which is exactly why you should read it. These insights will open your eyes to what is really going on around you, will give you an advantage in business and will help you in your personal interactions. Don't wait. Send it to your shopping cart now!

Body Language
Ever hear the expression โ actions speak louder than wordsโ? Our actions in this instance is body language. Knowing how to read and interpret body language is a key tool to success. Body language though is a double edged sword. You also have to convey the right message. Joe Navarro is a former FBI agent. He had to use body language in order to stay alive and succeed in his career. In effect you might say he had to be a bit of a psychologist. Reading this book will teach you a good number of things. First off when caught in;a fearful situation we have three options, fight , flight or freeze. In the office these would be situations that cause discomfort. The author uses a comfort/ discomfort paradigm in assessing body language. Such signs of discomfort would be squinting, rapid blinking, hyperventilating and nervous hand gestures. When questioning his suspects, Joe would let them get comfortable. After all a comfortable suspect is a cooperative suspect. Getting them comfortable allows you to set up a baseline and observe which behaviors denote what is comfortable for the individual you are dealing and also what denotes discomfort. When dealing with clients it is important that they feel comfortable working with you. Comfort equals safety and stability. This comfort would mean falling into step with your client which would entail mirroring back vocabulary that the client uses. For example if they describe their automobile you follow up using automobile. The emotional system will always trump our use of logic. When clients get angry then the best thing to do is let them ventilate. Let the ventilate to someone in charge so they know their complaints are being heard. Later the offending employee should write a letter of apology. This also gets rid of a lot of anger. Little things can spell the difference between success and failure. How you seat people at a meeting can prove to be very conducive for productive communication or communication failures. Usually you want to have people seated at 45 degrees to one another. Office set up is valuable as well. Have a couch that people can sit and be comfortable with, cold drinks is a good idea as well. Our body language and what we do sends a message. If you are meeting with someone important you may want to lean in and show interest . Playing with devices shows you donโt care. Image is almost everything.

Fantastic reading
This is the first book of Joe Navarro's that I have read and I will certainly putting his others on my reading list. This book is very well written and easy to read - once I started, I found it difficult to put it down. I read Body Language: How to Read Others' Thoughts by Their Gestures (Overcoming common problems) many years ago and found it fascinating, but Joe Navarro looks at non-verbals communication in a much wider context. The book doesn't just cover body language, but covers the wider issues of how organisations interact with the customers - everything from how your office is designed to the way your website performs. The approach to analysing non-verbal communication is vastly simplified from others that I have seen. This approach is much easier to put into practice since it makes reading the signals much easier in real time. If you are new to the subject, this book would be a good starting point. I particularly liked the last chapter where Joe provides example interactions from everyday situations. I would have liked to have seen this section expanded. They might just be anecdotes, but they put the material in the book into context and brings the material to life. Great reading and very useful material. Highly recommended.
