This is a steal for the price I got. While similar in price to the cheapest available 256GB USB thumb drives it is an order of magnitude faster. The read speed for a similarly-priced 256GB thumb drive is "up to 100MB/s" and cowardly unlisted write speeds vs this NVMe drive @ 1250MB/s read and 480 MB/s write. Now, I know what you're saying, that's terrible for a NVMe drive and it's less than they advertise! Maybe so but the price/performance ratio is fantastic currently. Also, the read speeds are 2x what any SATA-based SSD will ever see.The reason for the limited speeds is that this enclosure uses the Phison PS5008-E8 controller which only connects 2x of the 4x PCIe lanes. You lose half of your 4000MB/s bandwidth immediately. You'll lose some more to overhead and you're looking at a max of around 1600MB/s read and 1100MB/s write according to various review sites. The great thing here though is that you can replace the flash! Can you do that with a thumb drive? Finally, it is likely that this enclosure doesn't need active cooling unlike other TB3/NVMe enclosures that throttle down when they overheat.Finally, if I knew my relatives had TB3 ports (they ignored my laptop recommendations so I know they don't) I would buy all of the remaining stock as gifts. I'm considering buying the rest anyway and using them as backup or transfer devices...
