How can this be "cruelty free" when it's greatest ingredient is palm oil?

Good point. Cruelty free is normally accepted as the product being not tested on animals. Let's hope that the palm oil is at least from a sustainable source!

can you use this as shampoo? i usually buy the Faith in nature shampoo bottles, but money is tight at the mo, so im looking for a cheaper option

I'd recommend sticking to using it on hands because there are people with sensitive skin who it may irritate. Also this soap may strip the natural oils from your hair. So in general it was fine washing my hands with. Find maybe a gentle baby shampoo which might be the best option as they tend to be less pricey depending on their price. Also ask if faith in nature have a baby shampoo range? If not find another option.

I don't know although I looked but it is a beautifully creamy soap
