They’re not a very strong magnet. They’d stick, but not hold anything.

Is this board waterproof to some extent?

I would guess it would. I’ve never gotten it wet. (Not sure what scenario would entail a wet chess set!) The board is metal and plastic and the pieces are place. I would say if you want to play chess in a hot tub, steam room, snow, etc., you’re good to go.
