Earthwise GS70015 15-Amp Garden Corded Electric Chipper, Collection Bin

I was weary of purchasing this because of the bad reviews but I saw a cheaper version of this had quite good reviews so I figured this could be a price point expectation? I've only spent 1 day with it, but chipped for about 4 hours straight and my initial impression is that this thing is pretty capable. I jammed it up so that I needed to actually unscrew the unit 3 times -- once within the first 5 minutes because I didn't know what I was doing, once because I was trying to be way too greedy with the branch I was putting through, and once unexpectedly. In all cases, I probably could have cleared the jam by using some channel locks or pliars and just pulling the branch out from the top feed / hopper and this is preferable as a first step if only because it takes like 40 turns to unscrew the bolt that allows you to access the blades. To me, three jams, 2 of them definitely my fault, over 4 hours is totally acceptable. Also to be clear, I mostly chipped dryer softwood, but did do a fair amount of hardwood and fresher, greener, wetter stuff. But here lies a few tips. 1. Use safety protection!! Full eye protection is a must. Branches will whip side to side unexpectedly. Use ear protection! It's loud and you only have one set of ears. Even gloves are recommended because sometimes when the branch whips and it's big enough it can hit you pretty hard. 2. Do not be afraid to use some violence! Many "jams" were avoided by just smashing the branch through the hopper using the provided hopper tool. Also whatever you can fit through the feeder will chip! I was worried in the beginning about not feeding anything too big, but it's really about how well you can guide it through the feeder, not so much the size of the branch (at least with softer woods). And this guiding process is a bit of an art (see more below) 3. Use a 12AWG/20A extension cord. Otherwise the voltage drop when this thing pulls full amps chewing through a big stick will result in big power loss! At least I assume that's the case and is the recommendation in the manual! 4. Hardwood is definitely.. harder. So use some restraint in combo with my violence recommendation depending on the wood. Violence on soft wood works pretty well. Violence with hardwood will likely jam the machine. Thus -- 5. Have patience and do some prep. The biggest problem is with wood that has sharp bends or big knots that you can't turn through the hopper feeding guide. If you or whoever you are working with prep the pieces for success, you will definitely have more fun feeding the beast. 6. RTFM! "Read the ___ manual". It has advice on alternating easier feeding wood between harder feeds ones to help keep the chipper clear and recommends wet wood in between dry pieces. I personally didn't have any trouble with the limited wet / fresh wood but I chipped 95% older, dryer, soft wood (which it absolutely massacres). 7. You will definitely improve with time! The amount of violence I used definitely decreased over the day as I learned how to find the best rotation technique to get the branches to feed more smoothly into the chipper. My only "critique" is that it does chip into fairly small mulch (which is called out in the item description). This is totally fine and expected but I am kind of curious what the larger mulcher is like as I think I would probably prefer that end product, but not sure. I had pretty low expectation but it met them, definitely. And by the end of day 1 with the thing, I feel it has already paid itself off for the price. In the beginning of the day I thought okay maybe this is about a 4 star, but once *I* learned how to use the thing more properly, I feel it is probably a 5 star product. I mean for the price this thing is a beast!! I'm sure there are use cases where this thing just doesn't keep up but for me, this thing cleans up! Too bad it will soon cost 2.5x as much with tariffs as it's made in China. Thank you to our wise King for lowering the prices of products for those of us that actually work for a living. I don't know about the cheaper chippers on Amazon but (electrical) safety wise this thing is also ETL listed and has overload protection. It claims it is "built to last". We will see! Recommended!

Great Chipper for moderate usage, slow but sure. Leaves rating 2 - it's a chipper so while it reduces the size of the leaves it really doesn't "mulch" then into fine material. Flower stems, etc. rating 4 - it mulches stems and harder material much better. However, stringy leaves such as iris, tulips, and ornamental grasses are a struggle and plug up the chipper fairly often requiring removal of the blade cover to remove the blockage. Creates fine mulch. Limbs and branches (nine bark & ornamental pear) rating 3 - limbs over 1", especially knots are a struggle. Knots in particular are tough. It does make beautiful bark! Challenge - the round paddle used to push material into the cutter head was the most frustrating factor in using this chipper. Leaves wrap around the paddle making it too tight to fit through the feed hole in the hopper. This means it is constantly stuck pushing and removing the paddle from the hopper feed holes. It was frustrating enough that I immediately looked for an alternative. Grab a 3/4" x 4" x 12" piece of wood, add a handle, and 99% of the struggles with feeding disappear! Major Failure - After 6 - 8 uses the blade holder retaining lock nut came loose causing both cutting blades to contact the upper shroud and break off. Not a big deal except that the company doesn't offer replacement blades or the lock nut which as I will explain is a blessing! My advice based on this is inspect the retaining nut after every use and MOST IMPORTANTLY buy the blades sold by Amazon in the 4 - pack for this model. The blades have turned this into a completely different machine! The cutting speed and efficiency of these blades makes it feel like the chipper has gained 1 -2HP. It now cuts material up to the 1 1/2" and those nasty knots with virtually no strain on the motor. Secondly, these blades pull the material into the blades while the OEM blades required you use a lot of force to drive the material against the blades. Without the new blades and redesigned paddle my rating would not been above 3 but now it's a 4, maybe 5! And one last caution. There is an aluminum shroud above the blade holder that must be removed to clear debris that becomes lodged between the shroud and holder. Phillips head screws are used which means care must be taken to clean the screw to prevent damage. Secondly; these are self-tapping type screws threaded into plastic. Make sure to rotate the screws counterclockwise until they fall into the threads to prevent cross threading the lower hosing which holds the motor. It will be unusable if the shroud cannot be tightened!

I luv, luv, luv this machine!!! It is easy to operate and chipped up everything I put in it up into a lovely fine mulch. I operated it for a couple of hours with no jams or problems whatsoever. It is a beast and handled both green freshly cut wood and old dry wood with ease! Just know that it won't grind up leaves or really small twigs and will spit them out whole, so I just removed those before feeding my branches in, but seems to be the case with most electric shredders. I shredded 2 bushels in a couple of hours, which included taking a couple of short breaks to rest and get water. I bought this one after my dissapointing purchase of the Powersmart chipper. It ran for about 30 minutes, made a burning smell and died. So, straight back to Amazon it went, and I got this one, and boy am I glad I did! It makes the Powersmart look like a toy! The Powersmart slowed me down, as I had to manually feed the limbs all the way in, and when it got down to the last 4 inches of the branch I had to shove it through with the paddle. Not so with the Earthwise. Once put a branch in the hole and it hits the blade it's off to the races and you can let go and let it do it's thing, with no annoying last few inches to shove through, and no jams at all. A word of warning though, once it pulls in the branch, if you don't let go quickly enough, the branch can whip around and whack your fingers. This happened to me a couple of times. It didn't feel good for sure, but no permanent damage. Make sure you wear work gloves, as it does help cushion the blow a bit if this happens, and eye protection is a must as well. It made very quick work out of a 3 foot pile of branches. What we did, that also made things go faster is the day before we shredded, we prepared all the limbs, cutting off larger side shoots, removing small twigs, and leaves. Then the next day the shredding went very quick, as we were able to just feed the prepared limbs in one after the other, but you could do also do the prep as you work if you wish. So there is a bit of prep involved, but that is to be expected with any small electric shredder like this. They're not like the big, expensive gas powered shredders, where you can just chuck everything in as is. But I feel it's a good tradeoff because with the electric, you don't have the ongoing expense of gas, and the maintenance issues that come with a gas powered motor, and it's more compact for storage. I really love that the Earthwise came with the collection bin. It keeps the sawdust from flying around while you're shredding and makes it easy to carry and dump wherever you're putting the chips. Speaking of the chips, it makes a very fine mulch, which I personally love, but if that's not your thing and you want big chunk type mulch, this might not be for you. I tried to post a picture, but it Amazon couldn't upload it for some reason. The only thing I would change about it is the color of the collection bin. It is black, so you can't see when it fills up, so you just have to stop every once in a while and check. I went a little too long on the second bushel and it got full and I realized it when chips started blowing out the edge of the collection bin. It backed up a little in the chute, so I had to tap it a litlle to get it to fall out, but it cleared easily and after emptying the bin, I was back in business. I wish they had made it clear, so you could better monitor and know when to empty, but considering how wonderfully this machine performed, that is a minor annoyance that I can easily work around. Just a note, the other machine we considered was the Sunjoe cj603e, but I found out that the striker plate in them tends to break and you can't get the part, as it has been out of stock for like a year. After researching all the electric shredders on Amazon, and reading reviews I felt the Earthwise was the best choice, and it has proven to be true! Overall, the Earthwise is a beast of a machine, performs great, and seems like it will last a long time. I highly recommend that you give it a try! I think you'll love it as much as I do.

I bought this item to clear a bunch of fallen branches from a cluster of maple trees on my property. I assembled it and tested it immediately. It began to rain and wet the wood, so I stopped without a more thorough test. Here’s what I found – Pros: 1. The chipper was securely packed and was received undamaged. Light weight – about 35 lbs. 2. Comes with two wrenches needed for assembly. 3. Safety features are adequate. 4. Nice looking once assembled. 5. Easy to maneuver. 6. It chips DRY branches under 1½ inches thick – sometimes! 7. The chips are just the right size to use for mulch or compost. Cons: 1. The chipper was received three days later than promised. Unusual for Amazon. 2. The carton was received in the manufacturer’s box, not an Amazon over-carton. Contents could easily be seen by anyone with devious intentions. 3. During unpacking the chipper body spilled some wood dust and a few small wood slivers, indicating that it had been previously used (or perhaps tested at the factory). 4. Assembly by someone not mechanically inclined would be troublesome. The directions are sparse, confusing and incorrect when assembling the axel and wheels to the unit’s legs. The directions call for the legs to be secured to the body first, then the axel and its cover are supposed to be inserted into mounting holes in the legs. This is impossible, as the axel cover diameter is larger than the leg’s mounting holes. I had to remove one leg, insert one end of the axel, cover and washers in the secured leg, the other axel end in the loose leg, then reattach the loose leg to the body. Also, a 2-inch spacer is provided to separate the wheel of your choosing from one chipper’s leg. I found the spacer to be unnecessary. The wheels turn OK without a spacer. 5. Assembling the hopper ring to the hopper was impossible. The ring was just too large and misshapen to fit. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the ring to snap into every hole provided in the hopper. I wound up breaking 3 of the ring’s tabs trying and had to secure the unseated ring with super glue. I don’t know why the ring isn’t integrally molded to the hopper to begin with. A very poor design and most annoying to assemble. 6. I was able to feed the machine a dozen known dry branches, each just under1½ inches thick and about 3-feet long. The chipper jammed twice (not good). The clearing process was relatively easy. Both jams, however, tripped a 15-amp GFI circuit breaker in the house (hmmm, not good at all). 7. As a safety measure, the manufacturer specifies using a 12 AWG extension cord, no longer than 25 feet in length. This tethers the chipper to the house, requiring distant wood to be gathered & hauled to the chipper (a bummer if one has a lot of distant wood to chip). 8. This chipper is marginally OK for very light work within 25 feet of the house. A small industrial grade gas-powered chipper is far better and mobile for heavier work at any distance. In summary, since I voided the warranty by breaking the hopper ring tabs, the unit cannot be returned. Sooo, I reckon I will have to keep it and deal with its sporadic operation or try to sell it to someone else.

I estimate I got roughly 3 to 5 hours intermittent usage out of the chipper before it completely died. I have verified power to the device, the circuit breaker switch has been checked, all accumulated debris within the unit has been cleaned out, the lid is completely closed and the safety switch is engaged. No function. The performance for this device was somewhat disappointing. Any green material, leaves attached to twigs, is ground into a pulpy mush jamming the blades and the output chute beneath them. This required the unit to repeated be unplugged, opened and the impacted mashed material to be removed by hand. This is process is so frequent and time consuming that it takes about the same amount of time to instead use hand clippers to cut up the branches and twigs manually. I did not expect this electrically-driven device to have anything near the power of a gas-powered chipper. However for the cost of the device I could have paid a landscape crew to do shrub pruning and clearing and have them haul away or chip the pruned debris. It's a nice idea but it just is not up to the job. I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to get a few more hours of work from this device. EDIT: Suspecting the motor had burned out I disassembled the unit preparing to recycle the metal and trash the plastic components. Having removed the blade I removed the safety "key" mounted on the inside of the cover and shoved it directly into it's corresponding slot. The motor was again working! I found that with the "key" mounted to the inside of the cover, it did not engage into the slot to allow the unit to function, probably due to some misalignment when closing the lid. >>> NOT RECOMMENDED: I have removed the key from the lid and keep it inserted permanently in the safety key slot. BUT by bypassing this safety feature I will need to be diligent about unplugging the unit whenever opening the lid to clear out any jammed material.

This is on the edge of being a very good product but keeps falling short. I am not a reviewer by nature but every time I use it I am frustrated about something. The basic issues are 1) if there is an moisture in the leaves or twigs, which presumably there will be, the machine clogs very quickly, and 2) the related issue is that opening the machine to unclog it is very badly designed with a turnscrew that takes a lot of time to open. The operating solution is to use dry branches and sticks between wetter material or just let the debris dry our thoroughly first. The simple design solution is the design would be to be the rotating separator after the shedder much larger as that is where the clogs occur. I wish I could blame it on the Chinese as I avoid anything Chinese but I assume it was a US design. Final rating: When it works its a 5, when it doesn't it a 2; blended rating 3.5. The company should redesign it.

This is truly an amazing machine. I don't have a very large yard, but I am definitely pleased that I made the right decision to make the purchase. I have been trimming some overgrown scrubs in the yard and this machine has not only saved me time in disposal but saved me disposal space. For those of you that have done yardwork, you understand how bulky yard trimmings can be. You trim and trim and all of a sudden you have a mess of debris that needs disposal. It is usually relatively easy to trim branches and the like, but it is very time consuming and tedious to get these bulky items into the green yard waste container. With this Earthwise woodchipper/shredder, it not only makes disposal faster, but it minimizes the space it takes to dispose of this material. You will be surprised how all the bulky cuttings are reduced to extremely small amount of material. The attached picture shows what the shredded trimmings look like. In fact, with this machine, you don't actually have to dispose of the majority of the debris because you can put it directly back into your yard as mulch. The debris from this machine drops into a sturdy 10.5 gallon plastic bin. I prefer this big, solid, plastic bin versus dropping the debris into a bag like many other machines do. The machine is easy to use. You easily get the hang of it as you start putting the branches in. I did have a few clogs over several hours of use, but I was aggressive with the machine and kept feeding it. The machine is easy to unclog so this issue shouldn't deter you from getting one. This problem is probably universal to all chipper/shredders. The machine prefers branches over leaves because of the moisture content of the leaves. The excessive leaves are how the machine sometimes gets clogged. The clog is easily and quickly cleared. I like that this machine runs on electricity vs. gas. With electricity, there are no smelly and unhealthy gas fumes. With common sense, this machine is safe to use. The one feature that I don't like about this machine is that the lock knob to access the blades and inside of the machine is a screw lock knob. I believe the lock knob is the screw on type because it prevents someone from accidently opening it. It takes effort and deliberate action to open it vs having just a latch. I was so impressed with this machine, that I ordered one for my brother. I wish I found this machine earlier when my dad was still around. He would have liked and benefited from the ease of use and time savings with this machine. As another reviewer mentioned, he wishes he had gotten the machine years ago. I can't agree with him more. This machine is well worth the cost when you consider the time savings and the reuse of the debris as mulch. It is a win win situation. Originally, I was going to hire a gardener to trim the overgrown shrubs which would have cost a minimum of $500. I figured I could do it myself with the right equipment. Get yours today and you will be pleased you did.

About 20 hours of use now over the last month. I did not know this kind of thing existed until recently. I wish I had bought something like this over a decade ago. There is a good review going over some use advice and I'll give some more. I chose this chipper over the competing chippers because the design seemed better although I frankly am not entirely clear what the operating mechanism is on some of the other competitors (most clearly are doing essentially the same thing). What seemed most different was the use of the integrated box to collect the mulched material. The other products did not have as good a way to collect the mulched material. After using it... I still think this was the better product although like other reviewers, I have not use a competing machine. Also some others reviewed had pictures of the mulched material which did not look chopped up like I wanted it and the picture on this one looked better processed. Although I really think this is a great machine.... it is not a magic machine and has to be fed properly to operate. The negative reviews seemed to just not want to understand that If you are doing leaves... that could be impossible with this device without clogging. The feed material can only have so much moisture laden leaves go through without them turning into a clog. Even heavily leafed branches can be a problem and the best solution is to alternate dead old branches with a leafier one as stated in the directions. The box for the mulch can be a problem in that it can back up and clog up the machine. You need to check the box frequently, initially pushing the mulch towards the back as the material enters the box at the front part. Don't try to get too much in the collection box or you will get the machine backed up. I have experienced what I will call clog up jams and a jam into the cutting blades. Both cleared easily enough once you unscrew the knob to open access to the cutting blade and the area which empties into the hopper. As noted so helpfully in another review.... you will quickly experience when clearing clogs that a sensor gets some junk in it which prevents the machine from operating... so take a look when you experience this problem and clear out the stuff that has gone into this small rectangular area.... unfortunately it is easy to get material in this area when clearing out a clog. With experience in operation you will learn to prepare feed material better to keep the device operating better without problems. So I would suspect any of these small chippers require quite a bit of care to operate successfully. What you gain is a huge reduction in volume and you are producing some nice mulch you can use.... Not big chips like purchased mulch or as produced by big chippers.... but material closer to wood shavings used for pet rodents. Safety... don't kid yourself.... what this is doing can cause injury. Although the design keeps your fingers from getting into the cutting parts effectively and keeps the cutting effectively shielded, you will want to wear gloves, ear protection and eye protection. Versus safety glasses... a full face shield might be nice. When stuff can fly about with things like this and wood cutting tools, I personally use a helmet type PAPR which provides excellent protection. There is much less material kicked into the air from this than from a chainsaw, jig saw or circular saw but some does pop out. Also in feeding branches in they can seriously jerk about at times which can sting a bit. Any chipper will do this I would think. The key to feeding is figuring about what can be fed and then learning to rotate the larger feed material about while pushing it in. With all the work clearing bushes, trimming trees over the years.... this would have been so great to have then ... but I am enjoying using it and highly recommend.

Purchased this last year and have gotten a significant amount of use out of it. It chews through branches easily and only have issues with hardwood that is close to the max diameter. Be careful if you run it with a full bin as this will cause it to jam up and not clear. If this happens, its simple enough to reach under (with the power off) and clear the discard chute of the blockage. This also happens when you run pine branches through as well. Overall, this has been a great purchase and has allowed me to create my own mulch for the garden and reduced the need for throwing away or burning all that yard waste. Good to know that when the blades get dull, the shredded material will look longer and its as simple as turning around the blades as they are reversible. Don't bother if you want to use this for leaves though, way too much of a hassle.

Funciona muy bien no he tenido problema, es ideal para ramas de 3 a 4 cm de grueso. Si las ramas son muy delgadas se puede atascar y las ranas muy gruesas no entran. Recomendable para un jardín con árboles medianos.

Que tritura ramas pequeñas muy bien pero me gustaría que su orificio de salida fuera más grande. La usamos para preparar composta

If you let the machine do the work without trying to jam pieces through it fast as I seen some people do on You Tube, it works just fine. If you put in branches with lots of green leaves, it has a tendency to plug up over time but it is easy to clear up. Demo video show lady putting leaves through the top but it is way too time consuming I consider it useless for shredding leaves. I am quite happy how it chipped the branches and twigs. It is far less noisy than gas operated chippers. Collection bin is a definite plus. As noted, the reason I did not give it five stars is it should not be advertised as leaf shredder (misleading) and it's tendency to plug up with branches with lots of green leaves.
