A few months ago I bought a late model Singer sewing machine because several things on my machine no longer worked. However, being used to my 54-year old sturdy Singer Slant-O-Matic 500 workhorse , I could not get used to the new lightweight machine, even though it had been highly praised in testimonials.Finally, my son - perhaps tired of my griping about the new machine - took a good look at my old workhorse machine, gave it a good service and cleaning, and got it back to working like new.The only thing I could not find was a straight stitch presser foot, even though I looked and looked on the Internet. I tried Amazon with little hope - but here it was. Just like the original. I am again happily sewing with my reliable Slant-O-Matic, almost like new, including the original style presser foot!

Now that I actually have this foot in front of me, I am really unsure of why it exists at all. Every machine comes with at least one foot that has the needle position 1/4" from its edge. They are usually clear plastic so that you can see through it while you're stitching. The straight stitch foot I learned to sew with had a very narrow "toe" on the right and it was how I learned to top stitch. I had one for this machine, but I cannot find it--so I have been looking for one every since. The right toe on this foot is 1/4", just like the 4 or 5 clear plastic feet that came with my machine. This gets me no closer to my finished edge than anything else, and it's just plain clumsy. If the fact that it has a small hole the needle goes through instead of a slot is supposed to improve the straight stitch, it really doesn't work. Oh well, worth a try--but a fail...

This new presser foot works great. It seems to me that it is easier to so consistent and precise stitchlines with this foot than with the standard general-purpose foot. The small markings on the foot definitely help when using tiny seam allowances. The only downside I can see is that I did not buy this foot sooner. Definitely a useful attachment for just about anybody.It fits great on my singer heavy duty.

My favorite foot. Don't know why these new machines don't come with it. Makes straight sewing so much easier.
