Love it
Great bit of kit.As with all ebike kits you need to get a bit creative around the cables and battery placement. But it is a small price to pay for the £1k saving on a new purpose built ebike.I have previously built a rear hub and I thought that was cool, but this is another level. Great fun to ride, especially if you still enjoy cycling but cant be bothered with the utter pain of massive hills.I would say its definitely better to be put on a mountain bike, it feels more stable and because of the motor you dont lose much on tyre traction.I am thinking about getting another one, maybe getting a higher end 29er bike. With some neat cabling it would be on par if not better than the £3k ones.Junstar were good. It took about 3 weeks to arrive. For all those people who say it is difficult to install then just go on YouTube. Plus you really dont need the lights and brakes and throttle. It sounds like you do, but once you ride it you will get what I mean. All that is just more faff for wiring .Only downside is the annoyingly long cable to the battery

Better than expected
Like many before me I did a lot of online research before plumping for the 48v and 17.5A downtube configuration. Overall, the result has exceeded my expectations. The positives include: well made, compact yet powerful motor, very economical battery usage, very controllable. You won't regret it!The minuses include: overly long cables ('a universal complaint. Given the low price of these, why doesn't the seller give a few options of length?), the bottle cage fixings of the battery didn't fit my frame (so I've mounted the battery upside down - hopefully this is a temporary measure), and the throttle won't work without the brake levers installed (unless you cut off their plugs and merely insert them into the controller!).The most annoying aspect was that the motor kit arrived very quickly but I had to wait a long time for the battery. However, Junstar were very good in terms of communication and ultimately awarded me a very fair compensation for the delay.

Puts life back in old legs to enjoy cycling again
Fantastic piece of kit!Installation is very easy, although the pictorial instructions are quite minimal. Remember to put the correct crank arms on the correct sides (!), so if the pedals are tight, check before you force thread them. Cabling is easy, although the speed connector cable could be a few cms longer to facilitate an easy, tidy vertical connection.Mine came with free gift of lights but they are not really suitable, fitting-wise, for a MTB, so to keep the double connector sealed on both ports i've plugged the light wire in, and run the wires up into a bundle under the saddle. At some point i will add some riv nuts to allow me to mount the battery the right way up, as my waterbottle mounts were too low.Riding:I bought a 17A.h battery as a friend told me to get the biggest i could fit....this was wrong...50km of off road n track riding later and i have no depletion in the bars showing battery charge! Go for a bottle battery, 10A.h is more than sufficient unless you plan to use it as a pure ebike.Power assist is a dream, its like 20 years of toll off your knees! Even on eco (1) it gives you a real help up hills. Power assist 2, tour mode, is where i've felt comfortable, and hills become doable again. Turbo (4) is great for those short sharp pitches allowing you to remain seated rather than get off and push.I did connect the throttle, its useful when starting off before the PA cuts in, but its otherwise redundant.PA seems to cut out at 25kmh, i guess in line with UK rules. If anyone has a manual for the controller i'd be interested in seeing what functions are hidden....Overall, great buy!

All round excellence
I bought this to convert my wife's bike, as she struggles on anything hilly. I can only say that I have been totally impressed by the ease of fit and performance. She has now got her joy of cycling back and we can now enjoy riding again on even the most hilly terrains. Thete has been no faults with the kit and the pedal assist works well. Very pleased.Update. I have now bought and fitted a second kit for my bike, so I can keep up with the wife!!! Just as impressed. Did have a minor quality problem with a non critical part, which was readily replaced.

great way to improve an old bike
As per previous reviews, the instructions are limited. The thickest manual was for the battery. I guess because they can't cover every type of installation? If you're considering installing this motor, you've probably watched a few youtube videos, so you're likely to have some idea on what you're doing. You will need to purchase crank pullers and bottom bracket removal tools. Check what you have first.I put mine onto a 1997 Marin hard tail. I needed to take the grips off to slide the throttle and brakes on, replacing the old v brakes that were there. After a while, I took the ebrakes off again - they were just way too spongy and nowhere near as good as the old Avid levers.Installation is easy, but be prepared for some of the youtube hiccups. There was the end of a bolt fouling my fitting of the motor, so that needed filing off. You need a variety of allen keys - it seems no two bolts are the same. Once installed, the screen needs setting up with your wheel diameter and miles/km. Again, another youtube video. After that, off you go. The difference is amazing and the pull away torque is incredible. I wouldn't say you'll never feel out of breath, but the motor stops you arriving at places exhausted. A review i read said it makes you feel bionic - i think thats pretty close.
