Review: Durable, Great Value, Nice Features and most important FUN! - I wanted a little boat take my wife and our two doggies on water adventures but I didn't want to tow a trailer and store a larger boat so decided on an inflatable raft for quick weekend trips. After reading about rubbery and easily over-inflatable rafts that busted easily, I decided on the Intex Mariner 4 due to reviews describing the material as tough and stiff compared to the others. I figured our pups claws could easily puncture the cheaper ones. Indeed, I wasn't disappointed. It does feel quite rigid and strong. What I love is that It packs into a duffel bag. As others have mentioned, it's very heavy for a single bag so I split the load by putting the roll-up floor into another duffel. Do yourself a favor and get two sturdy duffel bags as others suggest as well. There was just enough room for my wife and I, plus our two dogs and minimal gear (Ice Chest, back pack, towels, etc). Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase. We cut a piece of outdoor carpet to put on top of the roll-up floor just to give it a little more comfort and to keep the doggies claws from ripping up the vinyl. It also made it a little comfier to sit on the floor. Overall, I love it! I'd recommend it to others looking for a tough little raft and I'd buy it again. I agree with all the others that believe this one provides the best quality and value for the price. Minor complaints (not deal breakers but stuff to be aware of): Wish there was just a tad more room. I wanted slightly more room that the Excursion 5 gives you but the higher-quality and tougher Mariner 4 won out. The duffel bag is very thin and flimsy. For the weight that it has to support it should have been thick durable canvas instead of something that feels like paper. I feel it doesn't provide any protection so will upgrade that immediately. I would have preferred that the inflatable seats have the Boston Valves to make them easier to deflate. We didn't take them out the first time which made the raft feel a bit roomier so I probably won't use them much (if at all). I sat on the Ice Chest to get a better rowing angle. There's also no Boston Valve on the center keel so you have to pinch to deflate. I'm just sayin', why not add those nifty Boston Valves everywhere - I would have paid extra. The Oars worked but I had to keep tightening them at the joints. The grip-ends completely slid off at one point so I'll be shopping around for replacements as I don't see them lasting long. It's made in China. Just sayin' Additional Lessons and Updates: 1) If you are hand-carrying to the water, splitting the load into two duffels is essential. This makes it easier to carry and put away. 2) One of the paddles broke after only the second use. One of the plastic retainer rings broke off and flew into the water. I periodically checked to make sure the rings were securely tightened so it wasn't loose when it broke, it was nice and secure. That leads me to believe that it broke from stress though we were not rowing too hard. Shopping around for replacement options and calling Intex to see if they'll replace. 3) Added a Minn Kota Endura C2 40 Freshwater Transom Mounted Trolling Motor (36" Shaft) and a Intex Motor Mount Kit to the mix. This added another 26 pounds of weight to carry. Of course this requires a battery [EverStart Maxx Marine 24DC] to run it so add another 45 pounds for the battery. Lets not forget the That's a total of 71 additional pounds to carry to the water which brings me to the next lesson. 4) Added a Farm & Ranch FR110-2 Steel Utility Cart with Removable Folding Sides and 10-Inch Pneumatic Tires, 400-Pound Capacity, 34-Inches by 18-Inches, Green Finish because of the now good-workout 4 round trips from vehicle to water (a) Bag one with raft and small gear (b) Bag 2 with floor, paddles and other gear (c) Trolling Motor and Ice Chest and (d) The 45lb Marine Battery. That reduced to one trip with the Utility Cart. 5) Added a Minn Kota Trolling Motor Power Center which only added one more pound. It's a really nice enclosure for the battery that powers the trolling motor and it has a built-in power meter and accessory plugs. 6) The cost of additional accessories can quickly add up. So far totally worth it. 7) Any boat with a motor or sail operated in Colorado on any public waters must be registered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. So I have to paid about $35 for the registration and have to do that every year now. I get a sticker to put on the raft plus I have to put the registration number on. I initially did this with vinyl stickers but they don't stay on very well so I'm thinking I'll just use permanent marker when the stickers wear off for next year. **** 1 Year Update *** September 15th, 2014 It's been a year and we've used the raft many times. I'm very satisfied with this purchase and would buy it again if I needed to replace it. No problems or any holes yet so I've not needed to use the repair kit. I was thinking of rigging a canopy for sun protection but we just take large umbrellas and that has worked out great. We've never used the inflatable seats that came with it, I just sit on a cooler which works great and is functional storage. The family including the dogs love the raft and adventures it enables. Review: More on specs of boat. - So when I was looking up all the different options and benefits between the navigator the mariner 400 and the seahawk 9 and even a few other knock off brands I decided to go with the mariner 400 I am not going to go into why I picked this particular boat there are plenty of other reviews on here about that. I want to talk about the actual boat, it seams that since this boat came out they have made some great improvements. From 2004-2012 Now I am only going off of what I myself have noticed on the boat. The new boats seem to have a more durable bottom then the old ones, including a rubber strip that runs along the bottom for if you run up on the sand rocks or whatever, definitely a lot stronger. The bottom material also is a lot stronger and doesn't rip as easily. I noticed it is easier to put in the hard bottom after filling up the 4 chambers about half way or so. Which takes me to another great update, now we have 4 air chambers instead of just 2. I know it says its made from 3 ply pvc but they have really improved on this concept, the material is much thinner then you might think they have come up with a thinner lighter 3 pvc material which is really great since it is much lighter, the boat itself weighing around 77 pounds it is still heavy and takes some effort to get back and forth but it is lighter because the material is not as thick and heavy but still very strong. The boat itself is about 10 feet long it is actually a pretty good size raft if you are 2 adults some stuff and maybe a kid or a dog that all would fit nicely adding 4 adults gets a bit close but I guess it could work if you really want it to. Much much more roomy then some of the other rafts. Bottom line this is a great raft for the price and quality, if your looking to get the trolling motor and all the things you need to get that up and running then your looking at around $600-$800. I still haven't found a canopy for mine so I believe they don't actually make one for the Mariner 400 but I have figured out away to rig one on. I hope this helps everyone and have fun this summer enjoying life!!!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can i put an electric motor on it and is the outside of the boat made with pucture proof material?**
A: yes on 1, no on 2. You'll need the Intex Motor Mount, also available on Amazon. You can't be serious about question 2. Nothing on earth is puncture proof!

**Q: Does this boat come with a Hull Identification number on it?**
A: The Hull Identification Number is located at the bottom of the capacity label on the stern of the boat.(Example: CN-XEE 12345J405)Once you have this number, go to the following page:http://www.intexcorp.com/boatcert/index/hullid/model/mariner-4/Where Intex will generate the "Boat Ownership Certificate" Which you would need as a "title" to register the vessel. (Usually only necessary if you intend to use a motor.)(Check your local laws regarding boating safety and registration requirements!)Happy sailing!

**Q: does it come with a carry bag?**
A: Yes, but it is flimsy. Better off with decent duffle bags or get one duffle for the floor and use the intex bag to carry the boat.

**Q: Can anyone recommend a durable bag on amazon to place the rigid floor and accessories in? Will keep the intex bag for the boat only.**
A: Sam: Some of the olive drab/black/sand canvas "military" style bags here on Amazon may be just the ticket. I got tired of us being "the people who roll into the rental cabin with kitchen trash bags and Wal-Mart bags full of stuff" and invested in some duffel bags and such. In my opinion, for the money, you can't go wrong with the Rothco "parachute cargo bag". There are various sizes (surprisingly large) that are available. Good luck!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Maiden Voyage a Hit!
*by V***O on April 22, 2014*

When I first bought this my wife thought I was nuts. I blew up the boat in my living room to make sure I knew what to do and my kids immediately thought it would be fun to jump on it. Thankfully, I was able to stop them. The boat is easy to blow up. The pump looked like it was going to be a lot of work, but I was amazed at how quickly I could fill it. Everything is numbered. The one mistake I made in the beginning was filling the central tube on the floor after I filled the sections around the boat. The floor was not easy to put in and I had to deflate one side. Lesson learned. Maiden Voyage Day: I went out to the local lake and put down a tarp to fill up the boat. For some reason I thought there would be very few people out, but much to my chagrin, I was wrong. In fact boats were moving in and out of the lake at the ramp and here I was with my 4 person mariner blowing it up on the side. NOBODY said anything, but I sure did get a lot of looks. My boys and I filled the boat up quickly and politely waited for an incoming Jon boat to load up on the trailer. I remembered my earlier experience and put the floor in first, tucking it in as I blew up each compartment. This worked much better. I did make another mistake which I will tell you about now, but will explain later. The boston valves are awesome, but I managed to pull off one of the rings that connect the valve to the boat. I absent-mindedly screwed the valve back on without putting the ring on properly and in essence screwed over the top of it. I was excited and nervous? What do you expect? My wife and 16 year old daughter were highly skeptical that this boat would work and to be honest even with all the reviews I read, I didn't know what to expect. I grew up on row boats and motor boats and the only experience I ever had with inflatables was the pool. Once I filled the boat I slipped it easily into the water on the ramp and stepped in. It is amazingly light in the water and at first it did feel like a "pool" experience. I bought the aluminum oars from intex which I highly recommend and positioned myself on the dock. I don't like the ones that come with the mariner and it is worth the $28 to have piece of mind. I went out first in the water alone, because everyone else was skeptical. The fishermen on the peer were a bit nicer than I expected maybe because they wanted to see me flounder around in the water (pun intended). Anything but that occurred. The boat moved through the water easily. Between the floor and the air compartments, central one included. I easily rowed far out on the water and back within a couple of minutes. *A small not here. Another Jon boat went into the water at the same time and I was rowing back from my exploration and they were still setting up. When I rowed back to the dock, I picked up my wife and daughter and took them out. This was a fair amount of weight, probably around 500 pounds of human in there and wasn't sure how the boat would handle. It handled as easily as I handled myself. Wow! I thought this was cool. So my wife goes from "My husband is nuts" to "Drop off the kids and let's go rowing around the lake." I don't think I have seen her that relaxed in a long time. My 16 year old? Well apart from the argument over the life jacket (there were other teens fishing) she loved it too. The boat was a hit. Sorry, I'm not done. I rowed the ladies back and picked up my two younger boys who waited patiently on the dock. This was the true test as we were going fishing. So I loaded up tackle, the boys, lunch and waved goodbye to my wife and daughter. There was no lack of confidence that the boat would float. I took the air pump with me, because I noticed section two was losing air. This was my fault, because of what I mentioned before. The valve did not seal right, because the ring was caught in the threads where it screws on. I added air and it filled immediately with about three or four pumps of air. We went out fishing in a quiet cove, ate lunch and fished. Each of my boys caught a small panfish and had a blast. I didn't fish, because I wanted to make sure they kept their lines in the water. Since I don't have an anchor I just kept repositioning the boat. After about an hour, we called it quits for the day. I noticed we lost air again on the #2 section and decided to see how the boat held up. The other three compartments and the central tube in the hull kept us afloat without issue. It's not that we lost a lot of air, but the section wasn't firm. I believe if we had blown a hole it would not have been much of an issue. When pulled up to the dock, we unloaded quickly and I packed up the boat into two bags. We were done so quickly, I thought I forgot something. We beat another Jon boat who pulled in and loaded up. It was very easy and the valves let the air out quickly. Pros: Very Sturdy Boat, Love the Floor, Easy to set up and break down, Great boat to get into difficult places Cons: I don't know how this rates as 4 person. I think you can do 3 adults for a fishing trip or excursion comfortably. 4 maybe with kids and the probably have to lean to the side. Intex may want to consider not including the original set of oars as they can break easily. Recommendations: Get the aluminum oars even if you are getting a motor, A small, light anchor kit is helpful for windy days. I also placed a piece of fabric underneath the seat at the front to keep the valve from popping up on the floorboard. I have not gone out with the electric motor yet. I bought the Minn Kota C240. As soon as Virginia returns the registration we are on our way. This is an excellent product for the price and we all had a blast. Enjoy!
