The second Ladies of Lantern Street novel from Amanda Quick explores the crimes, passions and paranormal secrets of Victorian London. Under the plain gray skirts of Miss Beatrice Lockwood’s gown, a pistol waits at the ready. For Beatrice is a paid companion on a secret mission—and with a secret past—and she must be prepared to fight for her life at any moment. Yet she is thrown oddly off guard by the fierce-looking man who joins her in foiling a crime outside a fancy ball—and then disappears into the shadows, leaving only his card. His name is Joshua Gage, and he claims to know Beatrice’s employers. Beyond that, he is an enigma with a hypnotically calm voice and an ebony-and-steel cane. . . . Joshua, who carries out clandestine investigations for the Crown, is equally intrigued. He has a personal interest in Miss Lockwood, a suspected thief and murderer, not to mention a fraudster who claims to have psychical powers. The quest to discover her whereabouts has pulled him away from his mournful impulses to hurl himself into the sea—and engaged his curiosity about the real Beatrice Lockwood, whose spirit, he suspects, is not as delicate as her face and figure. He does know one thing, though: This flame-haired beauty was present the night Roland Fleming died at the Academy of the Occult. Guilty or not, she is his guide to a trail of blood and blackmail, mesmerism and madness—a path that will lead both of them into the clutches of a killer who calls himself the Bone Man. . . . Review: Another Great Read - One of my favorite authors! The story line and the characters are once again fantastic! I recommend every book she writes! Review: Another Fun Read by Amanda Quick - The Mystery Woman is the second book in the Ladies of Lantern Street series. Jayne Ann Krentz, writing as Amanda Quick, takes back to old England and throws in a paranormal twist, just to make it fun. Our two main characters, Beatrice Lockwood and Joshua Gage, are possessed of psychical powers that enable them to carry out investigations more effectively. Throw in your requisite mad man, an egotistical assassin, and an obsession, and you've got the makings of an Amanda Quick historical romance. Quick never disappoints. She is one of my favorite writers. Yes, I always know what to expect, but she tells the stories in such a way as to keep me buying her books and devouring them, more than once. I reread her books multiple times, and all of her books grace the shelves of my home library.

The Mystery Woman
Before I left home, I read all the dog and horse stories I could get my hands on and Pinocchio the 1st translation from the Italian. The set with Last of the Mohicans, all of Sherlock Holmes, all the Max brand and Louis La Moure, all before I left home. In the 70's all Sci Fi, then Sci Fantasy. All of Christine FeeHan books. Agatha Christy, gothic romances. Now I am reading WWII books and non fiction about Islam. Now at night I read what I call a good read is a mellow book with some action, just enough romance and suspense so you can sit back and relax. I found that in Amanda Quick, Jayne Castle, Etc. My favorites are the Harmony series by her with her dust bunnies. This book is just such a read. It has some romance, suspense and I can put it down and just pick up where I left out the night before. Don't call after8P.M. I'll be having a reading adventure

The Mystery Woman, A Review for the Blog Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy
Amanda Quick is back.. I know many of you didn't know she left but I was not thrilled with the first installment of the Ladies of Lantern Street.. But The Mystery Woman showcases Ms. Quick in all her talented glory. For those of you who don't know.. Amanda Quick, Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle are all the same author.. As Ms Quick she writes wonderful historicals, as Ms Krentz she writes contemporary and as Ms Castle she writes fabulous futuristic sci-fi stories... what a talent!! But today we are focusing on her Ms Quick persona and the ladies of lantern street.. Miss Beatrice Lockwood is so much more than the paid companion hidden behind shapeless gray dresses. She is a woman with a career and she focuses her psy talent on helping to solve the cases for her employers on Lantern Street. She hasn't always been a super sleuth she has a secret past that is about to come back to haunt her. Beatrice was once a medium of sorts and would read people's auras sorta.. really she would read their psychic energy.. But when her mentor and father figured was killed and she barely escaped with her life Beatrice knew it was time to start again. Fortunately she discovered the ladies who run the Lantern Street investigations and a new career was found!! The mysterious Joshua Gage had given up his life in the government when a mad former colleague blew himself up.. injuring Joshua and leaving him with scars and a limp. He has hidden in the country for the past year until his sister called him to town. Seems she is being blackmailed and the trail leads directly to Miss Beatrice Lockwood. Steeped in intrigue The Mystery Woman delights.. I could just see this unassuming paid companion go home, take off her makeup and dress and turning into an attractive woman.. Watch this woman willingly enter the backstreets and slightly shady premises to gather her information. Could see her fleeing into the night when her life was in jeopardy and totally see her as never backing down. Now staid and true Joshua.. yeah I see him too.. Sure he had a job as well a spy.. but seriously, a woman? What is this girls deal? She claims to have psychic powers.. pooey.. logical in the extreme Joshua can not be convinced that such skills and talents exist.. and Beatrice is smart enough not to try and change his mind. She just does what needs to be done. Finding out that Beatrice's past actually does have something to do with the blackmailing unites these two strong individuals in search of the villain.. Only to find out that it's Joshua's past they need to worry about.. Great story Ms. Quick, glad to see you are back!! Shauni

Always enjoy Amanda Quick books
This book has the same characteristics as other Jayne Ann Krentz books no matter what the name she wrote them under - adventure, fun characters and humor. Maybe I am not the best person to review these as it's been a long time since I would consider anything she wrote less than a 5. This book is one of the Lantern Street books started by the Crystal Gardens. The heroine was first introduced in that book. I love the little pistol although with all the clothes they wore back then I would imagine it hard to get too. However I am happy to suspend reality for fiction. The ending has a little twist that I started to suspect about two thirds through the book. All in all an enjoyable read and like many of her books I will re-read several times.

The Mystery Woman
I love Amanda Quick. I must have read at least a dozen of her books and found them all enjoyable: I love her use of old-fashion names for her heroines (Prudence, Harriett, Olympia, etc) and the wonderfully different names for her heroes (Sebastian, Arthur, Baxter, etc). I have found her books to be both funny and sexy; the “Mystery Woman”, unfortunately was neither of these two, it was mostly boring, flat, and even a little bit stale. The one thing I did love about this book was the hidden garter gun our heroine wears strapped to her thigh, that was such a nice, modern touch as to make up for the rest of the book, including the rather dull hero – Joshua Gage. I love the fact that almost all of her heroes are damaged in some way: physically scared and a social outcast in “Ravaged”, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome in “Dangerous”, and having lost an eye in “Deception”. Joshua Gage fits into this mold because he was severely injured in an explosion. But, at the end of the book what do we know about Joshua Gage? Almost nothing! We know that he was an agent for the crown – so what did he do? Where did he go? How was he recruited? We briefly meet his sister and nephew, but this is so fast and fleeting as to be almost a second thought, which is very unusual because Ms. Quick’s secondary characters are usually very interesting. We are told in a few lines that in his youth he was “a wild and crazy guy”. But, so what, almost every young man in Regency England who had too much money, too much time on his hands, and too little to keep him occupied was also a bit wild, wickedly extravagant and just a touch crazy. I recommend this book; up to a point. I like Beatrice Lockwood and her shady past as “Miranda the Clairvoyant”. And again her garter gun, which she pulls out several times to defend herself, her client’s granddaughter and, of course, Mr. Gage.

Another page turner by Amanda Quick!
Ok so it's basically the same plot, the young woman is smart as well as striking in her own way, and the hero is handsome but unusual, they find each other get into a dangerous situation while falling in love, but because it's Amanda Quick, there's some sex, and humor, and her writing is just plain wonderful, easy to stay up all night and read it in one shot! In my opinion she is one of the most fun historical romance novelists to read!

Victorian paranormal
Miss Beatrice Lockwood works as a paid companion at a speciallised agency that also has a paranormal aspect. In the course of a job she meets Joshua Gage who helps her foil a crime. Then the adventure begins... I quite enjoyed this book and found it quite a compulsive read even though I figured out who the bad guy was early on. I love Jayne Ann Krentz and enjoy her books.
