You break your rod down and lay it out so the reel actually stays out of the case while two zippers help close it up, securing the rod. I used this several times already and it makes a huge difference in not just transporting your gear, but in moving from spot to spot. The only minor issue I had with mine was about 1 inch of the zipper track on one end came 'off track' but once I zip past that little spot the zipper pulls the teeth together fine and zips up, it's just one small spot at one of the ends that has zipper teeth that don't close so I mentioned it to customer service and they immediate replied and said they would be sending me a replacement---excellent service! I plan on buying one for my friend and one for my daughter.
