compatible with classic iPod or iPhone 6s?

I was able to connect my iPod to the radio via the audio in jack.  That worked great and I played all the music on the iPod with no problem.  My iPod is older, bought it from my grandson who wanted to upgrade.  Not sure what version it is but it does have the touch screen.  When I tried to connect it through the USB jack I got an error message.  I have played music using the USB jack and a Sandisk.  In my opinion, it is easier to play the music using the iPod and audio in jack.  The reason I say this is that the iPod has a screen and I can see the folders and find the songs I want much faster.  When playing the music on the USB Sandisk, you can access music placed in folders but you don't know which folders have which music.  There is a button you press to change from one folder to the next.  If your music isn't in a folder then it is played in a random order.  This is fine with me as I am learning how to save music onto the USB disk.  I don't know if this is helpful or not.  It is a great little radio, boom box, whatever.  I like it.  I plan to order another one but I want one with a tape player/recorder as well.  It will cost more but if it has the tape/CD/USB then it has it all in my opinion.
