I selected the size based on length, and the XL was long enough to give me a slight train (I'm 5'3", so keep that in mind). I didn't buy this with the intention of using it like a cloak or adding any semblance of warmth, so it doesn't bother me at all that it's extremely light and can't really be closed all the way - picture something like what Little Red Riding Hood wears.
