Samsung UN55JS7000 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2015 Model)

First, some preliminary info. The 50" and 60" models (VA panel) will have much better black and contrast levels but a narrower viewing angle than the 55" model (IPS panel). Also of note, none of the 3 sizes have a Samsung source panel. Samsung is not being deceitful by doing this, they don't have the capacity to make all their panels and they're not necessarily better than non Samsung panels. Samsung panels will retain contrast better in a bright room but will also be more reflective. I give this television 5 stars for being an affordable LCD television, not in absolute terms. Black uniformity: I don't know if I hit the jackpot or if this is representative of the IH01 Innolux panel but uniformity on a black screen is as good one can expect from a LCD panel natively. There is some unevenness but it won't be noticed with content unless you're watching in a dark room with sustained dark content. Tip for those who may have clouding issues, try massaging the panel lightly and evenly as possible with a microfiber cloth (don't bother if you have the 55" model). plus Banding: If you're a fan of hockey and to a smaller extent golf you may find it necessary to jump to Samsung's JS edge-lit models. For baseball and football banding is not an issue and for overall content the threshold of banding reaching distraction levels rarely happens - at least for the content I watch. minus Picture Accuracy: My sample has what appears to be very accurate color/gray scale out of the box in the movie mode. I didn't do much other than set the gamma to -1 and lower the sharpness to 5. Since this is a secondary television I was looking for a television that historically has accurate colors out of the box which I found to be the case with the 6 series (the JS700 is marketed as a 7 series television in our market). Color depth is great for a LCD television and the colors are especially vibrant on 4K YouTube videos. plus Motion: If you're a fan of the SOE then this television is not for you. It only has 30 fps motion interpolation and it's best to leave any motion enhancements off. Probably the most pleasant surprise is how well motion is handled given that the JS7000 has a 60Hz panel. Motion blur is great and judder from 24 fps is not all that noticeable. neutral Signal Video processing: Since this is my first UHD television I have no reference on how well upscaling works but its video processing is what I expect from Samsung which is to say it's awesome. One of my concerns with a UHD television was that 480p content would look worse than it would on a Full HD television but this hasn’t been the case. It doesn't look better but it's not worse either. Amazon VOD looks particular good but I'm probably benefiting more from HEVC encoding than anything else. plus 4K and HDR: Since this is only a 50" model with my viewing distance being about 9 feet away the extra resolution is not much of a factor for me. I didn't notice a difference between the HD and UHD versions of Orphan Black but it should be noted 1080p looks clearer than the Amazon version on my plasma. I don't expect much benefit from HDR content given the JS7000 lacks the nits and local dimming for it to be effective. N/A Contrast: This is the Achilles’ heel of the JS7000. The television has no way of increasing contrast from native levels. It’ll be a lot better than the 55” IPS model and black levels will not look faded in lighted conditions. The television does have frame dimming but all that means is the LEDs globally dim on dark content and has no effect on contrast and it’s more of a detriment as it messes with proper luminosity. On the plus side there is no blooming and the television is less prone to black crush. minus This television has either met or exceeded my expectations so I kept it. The JS7000 will standout further when content with the WCG (wide color gamut) becomes more readily available. I originally ordered this television through Amazon but the carton arrived damaged so I returned it and purchased it from a retailer where associates wear blue shirts.

Ok. This is my first 4k tv and I am impressed with it. That being said, the only way I would have bought it, is if it where on sale, which it was. After reading a lot of reviews, I hear a lot of people complaining about the calibration. I found a website, and I hope amazon lets me post it. It has the calibration settings you need and you can tweak them once you are done. http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/js7000/settings. For me I adjusted the backlight to 10 and raised the sharpness to 30. And please don't say your supposed to leave sharpness at 0. One can adjust this as long as they don't start seeing artifacts in the picture. One can also adjust the auto motion on the tv as well. I know a lot of people don't like the "soap opera" effect and I don't to a point; however I put this on 5 and left it there. Made the picture clearer. This tv has a lot of features and I like the fact that it turns off my receiver and ps3 at the same time and I did not have to program the remote. There is a setting one can use to turn this feature on. This tv also has ARC(Audio Return Connection). If your receiver has this feature, use it; otherwise you will have to buy an optical cable and you won't have full digital audio going to your receiver. Aesthetically the tv is nice, I heard a lot of people say it's cheap plastic. What's else is it supposed to be made of on the outside, metal? The only flaw is the stand. It wobbles a little bit and it does not swivel. If you do buy this, buy through Amazon. The freight company brought the tv into my house, connected the stand and turned it on. Then they took a picture of it to show that it was not damaged. They also took the packaging with them when they were done. I was going to give it a 4 because of the delivery time. Amazon stated it was supposed to be delivered to my house on the 9th and the freight company called me and told me it would be the 11th. I was kinda furious, because I had taken off that day to wait for the tv. I called Amazon and they stated it was their fault and made things right. Oh this Tv is supposed to be future proof; whatever that means. lol. Good buy if you can get it on sale. If you cant' then go for a 65 inch that is not SUHD. The "S" in SUHD just means more colors and and Nano technology. Oh I know there are a lot of factors when it comes to buying a 4k tv and a little of your gut feeling. I looked at VIZIO, SONY and SAMSUNG. Vizio sounds good, but not much when it comes to smart features. Sony is great, but not as popular as Samsung.

Bought this TV on Amazon a couple of weeks ago for $997, with free shipping. Total with tax was just over 1K. Amazon's shipping partner was efficient and right on time too. Used the settings from the excellent review of this TV from rtings.com. After setting up the TV, I found the rtings settings to be dark. Increasing the backlight setting will brighten the picture without messing up the excellent color accuracy you just invested a half hour inputting. In the end, I settled on a backlight setting of 13 (out of a max of 20) and am happy. The picture is vivid and the colors look great and the viewing angle on this TV is superior. The only negative is this really is a 60Hz TV. There is some motion blur, but I am coming from a 12 year old DLP set, so I am not bothered by it, but it is noticeable in certain scenes if you look for it. The speakers on the TV are surprisingly adequate, very pleased with that. One foible is the analog "headphone" jack (which allows you to plug in with an adaptor cable to old school RCA jacks for older audio equipment) is not variable output. I know such a setup is not the mainstream way to go, but I have high end vintage stereo gear that I am fond of, and my old TV had the variable output so I did not have to turn the volume knob on my amp. Not a surround sound guy, but rather a huge amp from the late 80s and floor standing speakers stereo kind of guy. I feel surround sound is overrated for home theatre, but that is a whole different topic :) At least it has an analog audio jack to go with the typical optical output jack. I find the remote to be very functional, and the TV's operating system to be intuitive, fast and cool in general. Again, I am coming from an old DLP set, so this stuff is cool for me. I am on Netflix and over the air with a ViewTV PVR box with a 500 GB hard drive, and the OTA signal looks fantastic on this TV. The OTA program menus display much better on the TV (multiple channels and a real PVR look to them) than they do on the primitive ViewTV box. Too bad recording OTA TV is disabled. I hear it is enabled outside the US. In the end, I am pleased with this TV. It is an "entry" unit, but as such it offers a really nice bang for the buck proposition. Yes, I would like to have no motion blur, but the vividness of this TV's IPS panel is worth it. Do some research, the 55" TV uses an IPS panel, and the 50 and the 50 inch models use the more prevalent VA panel. The VA is faster and less blur, but not as bright and vivid. Decide what is important to you. I like the balance of size and picture quality offered by the 55" model.

This TV is simply awesome. I was debating between getting this (50") or the 6500-series 55", and I'm VERY happy that I decided to go with this one. After doing some research on UHD 4K versus SUHD 4K, I figured that sacrificing the 5" was worth it. The colors on this thing are so vibrant, it's unreal. I did not have to adjust anything either - straight out of the box, it looks amazing. The 4K resolution is so high it almost makes things look like they're moving at a higher framerate - this takes a little getting used to, but after a couple of days, my eyes adjusted. I'm enjoying the smart TV aspect of it too. The processor is pretty snappy, unlike other TVs and devices I've used in the past. Apps are very responsive, and having a native Netflix app that supports the 4K resolution is really nice (previously I was playing it on my PS4, which outputs a maximum of 1080p, at least for now). One thing I'll recommend is to turn OFF the "instant-on" feature in the menu - in theory it's very cool (it really is instant), however, it's basically like putting your computer to sleep. After having it be "asleep" for multiple days in a row without truly powering it off, I noticed things like menus, Netflix, and other normal functions started to get sluggish. Disabling the instant-on and powering the TV off and back on got everything running fast again.

I was going to make this a well written review. Elequent and entertaining...but lets just get down to the 'why did this guy rate the TV at 1 star?'. That's what you're here for. It's pretty, but it shows you ads on the menu, tracks everything you watch, and none of the following HDMI devices worked: PS3, Xbox One, Samsung Blue Ray player, MS Wireless Display, Chromecast. All just gave me a black screen. I'm returning this TV. Q: Is it gorgeous? A: Those Netflix demos you pay an extra $2 for certainly are. Everything else looks pretty much like it did when you were watching things at 1080p. Q: Really? A: Yea. There really isn't any compelling reason to go to 4k at this point. But, I guess you can get ahead of the curve. (I was just a fool). Q: What about the SMART feature?? A: Sure, it's there. Pre-installed with all sorts of apps you can't remove. Q: Wait, what? A: Yea. It has Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Crackle, Pandora, Amazon, all loaded up and ready to go and absolutely no way to remove the ones you don't want, won't use, and can't stand. Q: Well, that's not so bad is it? A: Sure, Until you realize that the SMART feature actually shows you ads while you're navigating to the app you want. Q:?!?! A: Yea. You get ads for shows and services right there on the menu of the TV. There's also the Terms of Service. Q: But it's probably just a standard TOS, right? A: Sure, if you consider "We're going to monitor everything you watch and say so we can better show you ads" to be standard for using a TV. If you don't mind your TV showing you ads when you're not watching shows that show you ads and then be monitored all the time with no real choice and no information up front about what you're getting into? This is the perfect TV. Me? I'm 3 days in and I'm looking at the Sony offerings and seeing what it's going to take to return this.

BUT THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN " MOTION RATE " AND " REFRESH RATE " READ ALL THE FINE PRINT, NEED TO RETURN AND GET A TRUE 120 Hz REFRESH RATE and not a 120 motion rate.

I bought this TV when they had the Black Friday sale. Overall it is a decent TV, but I'd likely not have bought it at full price based on my experience with it so far. I was concerned about the refresh rate as some reviews said it was bad for movies but I watch a lot of movies on it and I have not noticed any juddering of the picture. From time to time if I watch the TV in a dark room and the scene is dark, there is a "spotlighting" effect near the four corners that is quite noticeable. Not sure what causes that but it only manifests itself when the lights are out and the scene is dark. 4K, 2160 programming (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Man in the High Castle) looks tack sharp. Out of the box the colors seemed a bit off but this was SUPER easy to fix. Just go on your favorite search engine and find custom calibration settings. There are a few out there that really make the colors accurate and vibrant. This TV's biggest problem is the contrast. It is not nearly as strong as I'd like. Blacks are not dark enough. So if it is on sale and you just want a decent TV for the bedroom or playroom go for it. Otherwise, there are better options out there for the price.

This is a great 55" 4K TV which I'm enjoying a lot. The colors are vibrant & the display is sharp. The smart TV functions work well and the Internet connection is excellent. I like that the border is very small so you get maximum viewing area. Our viewing distance is 13 Feet and the 55" display is perfect for the space. Standard resolution seems to be 1080P for most of the cable channels we watch. The upscaling feature of this TV gives us sharper and better viewing than we ever achieved with our old 1080P TV. The best results are derived with actual 4K content. We have watched some amazing 4K movies that you can find on YouTube and other places. I assume that regular broadcasts will improve in time. Between the greatly improved viewing due to upscaling of regular channels, actual 4K content available now and future prospects of more 4K content, this is the perfect TV for us. It is highly recommended.
