Good product and price for the capacity with decent performance
I use it for backups, since the additional speed makes that process less painful. It definitely works faster than a standard external HDD. However, it's still a HDD so speeds won't be nearly as fast as SSD or NvME. Given the price difference between SSD / NvME and this product, you can't beat the price, quality, performance, and most importantly capacity for a HDD, since comparable SSD, etc are far more expensive for this amount of space. For good performance for gaming or large data storage (imaging, backups), it's a good product at a decent value.

WD_BLACK 4TB P10: Because Your PlayStation Needed More Room for Digital Hoarding
So you’ve finally run out of space on your PlayStation — surprise, surprise. Enter the WD_BLACK 4TB P10 Game Drive, the digital equivalent of that extra closet you’ve been desperately needing but never had the courage to ask for. Plug it in, and suddenly you’ve got enough space to hoard every game you’ve ever wanted to pretend you’ll finish someday. And by hoard, I mean seriously hoard. 4TB? That’s like a game library’s worth of commitment-phobic purchases. It’s portable, which means you can brag to your friends about your massive game collection while secretly hoping they don’t ask to borrow it — because sharing games is for amateurs. Also, it works seamlessly with PlayStation, which is a relief because the last thing I needed was another tech headache. Fast, reliable, and ready to carry your digital baggage, this game drive is basically the unsung hero of every gamer who’s said “Just one more game” one too many times.

I just works better
When I came across the "We suggest the Black model for your gaming needs" message I figured it was just marketing. But given that this drive is the same cost as a non-gaming drive...why not? I've had issues with hard drive not disconnecting on the PS5 causing an error message at every startup and a hard drive repair. This has happened with hard drives AND SSD so I figured it's just a problem with the PS5 and bad design. However... I haven't had this problem since I switched to this drive. In general the PS5 interface is extremely sluggish, and games load REALLY slowly, even from the Internal "high speed" storage. In general, the PS5 is just a lousy console, but there are upgrades that can improve the experience. One of them is a good optimized "game drive". This particular drive is a bit more rugged than other plain ones, and looks like it came out of one of those Toughbook laptops. It's just a USB hard drive like any other, cheap for the capacity, but I'm imagining the cache and firmware must be optimized for this specific use because... I can't quite logically explain it but this hard drive is MUCH faster than even an SSD plugged into the PS5. It just loads up games near instantly, and they download and install faster than before. The hard drive errors on shutdown and restart seem to have stopped. So overall? If you are using a video game console this appears to be the ideal external hard drive that you want. It's certainly the one I want going forward.

Nice little external hard drive for the money
I got this external hard drive to supplement the tiny hard drive on my gaming laptop. I could have just installed another internal drive, but that’s a lot of trouble I didn’t want. It works extremely well, and while Steam downloads are a tad slow (large game, USB interface, or network speed could have all been the culprit), I did not see a lag time when actually playing the games. The product’s form factor is small, somewhat armored, and lightweight. I also bought a hard case for it, as my setup has to be portable. I am quite pleased, overall.

How it holds up almost 3 years later
Had this since 2023 to fill my giant Xbox library. Got a PC now so formatted the drive for my pc. Xbox now has official Seagate expansion card. Using this drive to fill less demanding games and emulators to not hog up the internal SSD. The load times are slow for demanding games for the Xbox, but games like LAD 7 and most of the Yakuza series loads up fine on the drive. Games with those graphics handle well. Silent Hill F struggles with textures and load times playing on the game drive for the PC. That being said, use it for less demanding games when on PC. On Xbox, it runs mostly fine. Try to get this when it’s on sale. Very good product.

Sick Design, Premium Materials, Large Storage
If there was ever a sexy hard drive, this is a sexy hard drive. I was looking for a hard drive for backups, but when I came across this, I thought, "Why can't it be sexy and a backup hard drive?" This 2.5" external hard drive is currently the largest at 6TB. Inside is a plain old spinning drive that can transfer data at about 120MB/s max. This drive is meant more for storage than for speed, and I'm fine with that. There are different colored versions of this. Instead of the all-black version, I got the one with the white base and black top, mainly because it looks better on top of my white desktop computer. I'm using this mainly as media server storage that doesn't have to be written to too much. Overall, the design is sick, the construction and materials are premium, and the price is just right for everything you get.

You can't go wrong with Western Digital
First, I build and repair a lot of computers and electronics for family and friends. I ALWAYS use Western Digital drives when building or replacing a hard drive. I usually use the "Black" series of drives for performance, durability, and the warranty. These drives last well past their warranties with decent performance for a conventional platter drive. These are the ones to use when you need a large capacity conventional hard drive. I purchased this 5TB gaming external drive to expand the capacity of my PS4. For the first time, I've gone all digital with my PS4 games to reduce the number of game cases and disks around. I also like to have all of the games available without re-downloading, so this makes digital storage capacity at the console critical for me. Hooking up this drive, formatting it, and moving games over from the internal PS4 HD was much easier than I had anticipated. Downloading games from PSN to the external hard drive is also seamless. Running games directly from the portable drive through the USB 3.0 connection doesn't seem to be any slower than launching them from the internal hard drive, at least I haven't noticed any difference in the load times by subjective evaluation. When running continuously, like during a game transfers, the drive gets warm but doesn't seem to get hot enough where I would be concerned. The only major down side to this drive, and it's a flaw with most of the 2.5" based WD portable drives, is that they put the drive's activity light right next to the USB cable connection. I have the drive stacked on top of my PS4 so that i can see the light flash whenever it's reading / writing. I would rather not see the cable, which has to be twisted from the front back around the housing to plug it into the rear PS4 USB port. Depending on how you route the cable, you may not be able to see the light from certain angles if the cable blocks your line of sight. It's not a big deal, but it would be nicer if they had the drive activity light on the other side for a cleaner looking setup. The other down side, which doesn't bother me at all since I'm not planning to tear this thing apart and I haven't verified this info personally, is that according to youtube reviews the drive itself is not a standard 2.5" SATA laptop drive. The actual hard drive is a portable specific build with a different interface board, so you can't disassemble this bad boy and pop the drive into something else or use the enclosure with a different 2.5" HD. I've only had mine for a couple of months, but so far I have no complaints. It does everything I need with no perceivable penalty in performance. The extra storage space (5TB!) is a life saver since I had maxed out my PS4's internal drive, and it had already been upgraded to a 2TB drive. This is a much better option than cutting up the PS4's case to fit the height of a 4TB internal replacement. In addition, Sony did a nice job in making this approach a well supported option for expanding the PS4's storage capacity.
