Pediatrician’s Opinion
I am a pediatrician. I look in around 20 pairs of ears a day. I bought this otoscope to have at home so I can look in my child’s ears. It works well! LED lights really can wash out the colors of the ear drum, and this one didn’t have that problem. Is this better than my work Welch Allyn with the halogen light bulb? No- nothing is ever going to beat that. That otoscope is, however, ridiculously expensive. Is it better than the professional Welch Allyn with LED light and 2x zoom? In my opinion, yes. That one washes out the color of the eardrum too much. It is also better (though not a crazy amount better) than the pocketscope Welch Allyn. It is also bigger in size than the pocketscope Welch Allyn so something to consider if you’re planning on traveling with your otoscope. Lastly, it use a C batteries as opposed to AA batteries, which is a bit annoying. Thankfully, the otoscope does come with C batteries in the container. It also is better in terms of color and visualization ability than a camera otoscope. At least for me it’s too diffuse a light and awkward to manipulate with a screen and a toddler. It is also better than 2 cheaper ones I bought at CVS and on Amazon, respectively. Those two were so awful, I cannot believe they are allowed to be sold. I couldn’t, as a professional, see anything with them- the lights were too diffuse and bad quality LED with a blue cast.I cannot speak to the longevity of the product as I am reviewing it based on how it works for visualizing the eardrum. Given the price I am inclined to think this is a very good value. If you prize a smaller affordable otoscope I’d go with the pocket Welch Allyn. If you want the best visualization for the price I’d say this is the one for you!

Excellent useful product, especially considering the price.
I have owned several of these Dr. Mom otoscopes, including the original, third generation, fourth generation and now fifth generation. I am a physician and I keep these at home or for travel. And I give them away to friends. I have been happy with all of them. Now, having tried the fifth generation model I am quite impressed and I don’t understand how they can sell a nice quality product like this at such a reasonable price. I still have my original Welch Allen from medical school, which cost about 10 times as much. The light is a good color for examining the tympanic membrane. The image is clear. It runs on C batteries, which I like because I don’t have to worry if it’s charged or not when kids are visiting and they have an earache. The switch is much better than the cheap purple knock-off, which I regrettably bought. It even has a port for insufflation. It feels like a quality instrument, and I am looking forward to using it. Very handy to have around and well worth the money.

Handy if your kid is sick frequently
My kid has a history of ear infections and just generally catching ALL THE GERMS. She wouldn’t always present with the ‘normal’ signs or symptoms of an ear infection and we would only know for sure if we made a trip to the pediatrician. Enter this handy dandy otoscope. I have already saved 100$s in copays because I can check her ears and decide if a trip to the doctor is warranted. The otoscope comes with an insert that gives instructions and color picture insert that describes what a healthy ear looks like and several images of a not so well ear. I have also used this on my big kid that has some pretty gnarly wax build up and needs an ear lavage a couple times per year. I can take a peek to make sure no big chunks of ear wax isn’t hanging around. This has been a very good investment and works well.

As a home-use instrument it is perfect.
I need an otoscope to keep an eye on an older family member's ear wax problems (he wears hearing aids). After looking at all the possibilities I took a chance on this otoscope and I couldn't be more satisfied with it. The light is bright and white (and not blue as some people have reported).I had a second-hand Welch-Allyn with a rectangular lens that was a bear to use because it was heavy and had me squinting at a tiny image. The lens on this scope actually has the same viewing area but it's round and easier to look through. The image is really clear because the lens is optical glass. I'm not sure that the magnification is 5x, but the images I see are more than adequate for an ear inspection. The specula tip is a standard size that fits all professional otoscopes. I also bought the 45 count - LARGE diameter Disposable Specula Tips. Even though these are disposable they are reusable if you give them a wipe with alcohol after each use.It has a port for an insufflator bulb to blow air into the ear canal for diagnostic purposes, but I feel this a feature best left for medical professionals to use. This otoscope is light and is a nice handy size and is very comfortable to use. I haven't had to use it to examine ear infections and probably never will, but as a regular home-use instrument it is perfect.

Many Thanks for a Quality Instrument
This is a professional quality instrument at a private citizen price. For years we struggled using a plastic over the counter version of the otoscope: poor light, poor magnification, flimsy parts. The Doctor Mom Otoscope surpassed all our expectations for quality and features at a very reasonable price. Many thanks to the owners, developers, designers, and manufactures of Doctor Mom instruments!
