Pros and cons of this heated bird perch
I'm writing this review in the hope of saving birds from some of the things I have read in other reviews here, by owners who obviously love their birds but don't have a lot of knowledge of birds. I have many birds, many different species large and tiny, all rescues. I have had at least 20 Thermo Perches over the past decade, large and small. First of all, I'll tell you why I buy them. When they work, there is nothing better for a sick bird, or a lonely bird, or even a healthy bird in an aviary on a winter night (particularly female birds). Most sick birds, older birds or birds sleeping alone end up loving this perch. Some birds are afraid of it initially and a few stay afraid. Young healthy males usually show no interest in it - their testosterone is so high they are warm enough except in extreme cold. The perch is too smooth, and size small is not as small as it should be for finches, canaries, etc. That being said, most small birds - even tiny zebra finches - find a way to comfortably perch on them if they want the warmth. They are a blessing to many birds in cold, lonely, or unhealthy situations, and I believe they can extend the active life of some of these birds. Now, the bad. First, as I mentioned, the size, texture, and shape. Not ideal, not even close. Still, worth buying and trying it for your bird. You have to understand how important warmth is to birds in less than ideal conditions. More important than food and water. It can be the difference between life and death in a sick bird. Next problem. I suspect the company may recently have switched to having them produced by a new manufacturer. The older ones never failed at the cage attachment. While I have not had any of mine break at all, not even the ones used by my heavier birds, I have read of a few recent failures. I have also noticed my newer ones do seem just slightly weaker in that area. But overall they are physically still quite good quality. I think breakage is still a rare occurrence, not anything to be overly concerned about unless you have a very heavy bird. That leads us to the final, and worst problem. One that can seriously endanger your bird. That is over-heating. I never had any of my perches over-heat until I discovered one last night. When doing a last check in my parrot room in the dark, right before closing the door for the night, my mitred conure Oliver, a young male, made a strange noise. I went over to see what was happening. He was sitting on his heated perch, which he never does. He normally sleeps on a branch right next to it, to absorb a bit of the heat without direct contact. This night he looked a little too alert. I felt the perch, and it was hot to the point of me recoiling my hand because it burned. Needless to say, I removed my bird instantly, disconnected the perch from the wall, and let it cool before putting him back. He's a very smart guy - I know he did that to let me know something was wrong. It had probably just started to radically over-heat. One review on here by an owner says "it was too warm, with a few hot spots. But overall, a pretty good idea". Can I just say, "NO!"? If the perch is too hot, get it out! Immediately! Your bird will get burned, and could even lose toes, feet, or get an infection. I always wondered if these things could over-heat, and have always physically checked them on a regular basis. But I never had one over-heat until last night. So please, understand that these things are truly a great idea. But they are cheap plastic electric items, and can fail. I would not say absolutely never use them because they can do a lot of good. But if you use one you MUST check them with your hand every day, and take them out immediately if they are anything more than pleasantly warm. One last thing - as tempting as it may be, do not wrap these perches. In anything. That can lend to over-heating or even a possible fire. If you choose not to use one due to the problems, there is another product - a small heated panel that easily attaches to the cage wall. I have had great success with that as well and it does seem more consistent and reliable.

Great perch
cannot sing enough praises for the Thermo-Perch; it's an absolute game-changer for exotic bird owners like me. My parrot, Parker, has been living the life of luxury ever since this marvelous creation entered his cage. First and foremost, the health benefits are outstanding. Living in a climate with unpredictable drafts and air conditioning can take a toll on our exotic birds. But thanks to the Thermo-Perch, Parker is now shielded from the harsh effects of temperature fluctuations. This thermostatically controlled perch ensures that Parker's environment remains consistently cozy, just the way he likes it. The unique shape of this perch deserves a standing ovation. It reduces the chances of pressure sores and foot cramping, which is crucial for Parker's overall well-being. The fact that it's made of tough, non-toxic, bite, and scratch-resistant plastic gives me peace of mind, knowing that Parker can't harm himself while enjoying his perch. What truly sets the Thermo-Perch apart is its temperature control. Parker now has the luxury of choosing the perfect temperature for himself, thanks to the varying temperatures from end to end. It's like having a personal thermostat for your bird! Safety is paramount when it comes to our beloved pets, and the Thermo-Perch doesn't disappoint. It uses a harmless 12V electrical current, and I've made sure to keep the cord well out of Parker's reach to ensure his safety. As for sizing, I opted for the Medium, and it's the ideal fit for Parker. The perch diameter varies along its length, ensuring Parker's comfort as he perches and plays. And let's not forget the brand behind this brilliant creation โ K&H, with over two decades of experience in crafting safe, innovative, and top-quality pet products. They've truly outdone themselves with the Thermo-Perch. In conclusion, if you cherish the well-being of your exotic bird, the Thermo-Perch is a must-have addition to their cage. Parker's never been happier, and I'm one satisfied bird parent. Plus, with the added peace of mind of a one-year limited warranty, what more could you ask for? Thank you, Thermo-Perch, for bringing warmth and comfort into Parker's life! ๐ฆ๐ก๏ธ

Wonderful Product!
My conure absolutely loves this perch! She sits on this perch the most and loves the warmth! It gets toasty warm for her feet, but not hot. We also have the little "Snuggle-up Bird Warmer" box to give her another spot in her cage for warmth if she wants it. I highly recommend this! I've this perch for 4 years and it has been amazing!

Great peace of mind, but difficult install
My 8-month old parrotlet (named Zek) lives in the corner of my room, which is one of the draftier areas of the house. I got this perch to keep him, and his whole cage, warm. I keep a cover over the back half of the cage, where the heater is; I keep a thermometer on the cage, and since installing the heater, the top of the cage has been about 3-4 degrees warmer. I haven't seen him ever sit on the perch, but he sleeps on a perch slightly below it, and often rests his head on the heater, so I think he likes it. When I put my hand on it, it's definitely warm, maybe a little hot; and I'm wondering if it's too hot for him to sleep on. There's no temperature control, just plugged in and on, or not plugged in and off. However, it definitely gives me peace of mind that he is warm enough - or at least he would be warm enough if he wanted to sit on it. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the cord has a metal bite guard over a good four feet of the cord. The picture makes it look like it is like six inches long, but it goes all the way to the floor on my cage (foot and a half tall pedestal, plus 22-inch cage). Problems: I had an excruciatingly difficult time getting the stupid thing installed. Don't get me wrong, I love the perch, but it was not an easy install. I think the problem is that I have a slightly older cage, and the bars are pretty close together (3/8 inch??). The half-moon prongs that stick through the bars (which you screw the "nut" fastener onto) are closer to a half inch wide, so I had to bend the bars to get it to fit. I also have a bar running horizontally about two inches from the top, which is where I wanted the perch to go (so Zek could sleep on it if he wants). Since it only has a single vertical slit in the bolt (not a vertical and horizontal slit, which might have allowed me to put it over the cross beam), I had to choose to put it above the bar or below it. I also highly recommend you take the bird out of the cage to install the perch. Zek was pretty scared when I was (gently!) pulling all that metal-wrapped cord through, and then trying to bend the bars into place. I had to take him out and put him in his travel cage for most of it. That being said... It was definitely worth the effort to get the silly thing installed. I am pretty sure that he's happier with this perch, and I KNOW that I am happier.

Great heated perch
My bird's cage happens to work best where there is a bit of a cold draft, so I got this to help him keep warmer if needed. Mounts easily to the side of the cage, the large washer covers almost two bars each way so it's very secure, and the design keeps the cord away from the bars of the cage, making it harder to reach inside. The warmth is gentle but noticeable, and it's a bit warmer toward the end than the base (so he can move back and forth if he needs to.) I bought the small for my Senegal, and it's a great size. I wish the ridges were a little deeper, or the surface a bit rougher (although that might make it harder to clean), as the plastic is a bit slippery for his feet, but over all I'm glad he has a good source of heat in his cage. Edited to add some pics of Stanley enjoying his warm perch.

Imperceptible "heat": Broken or Ineffective?
I wanted to love this product, I really did! The idea is beautiful; keep your feathered friend cozy and warm when the weather turns a bit chilly. It seems only polite to offer them the same luxury we expect when we are cold! You know, a special place to get an extra bit of warmth just when you need it! Sure, we all can sit under just about any blanket for 30 minutes and generate some heat, but the instant "ahhh" of an electric blanket's goose bump inducing bliss is where I'd rather find myself any day of the week! I wanted so badly to give that to my birdies! Alas, I am returning mine after receiving it yesterday. I bought the small size for my small flock of Rosie Bourke parakeets. My biggest complaint is that mine never felt warm, at all, not even slightly. I left it plugged in from 3pm-10am the next morning to be sure. We double checked connections, tested the power supply, even the outlet. Not one iota of perceptible warmth anywhere. Not only that, but our birds tiny feet slipped all over it from the lack of grip combined with the unusually large surface area. I could tell right away they didn't like it for that reason alone. I figured once it heated up they might change their minds, but when it failed to even warm slightly, I knew it was going back. I cannot say I recommend this product. Now, having said that much, I'll let you in on a secret. I am indeed returning this one, however, late last night I decided to try the sanded version on the off chance my non-sanded "birdie ice skating simulating" therno-perch was merely just dead on arrival instead of being a $30 perch that does nothing but pump out an absolutely imperceptible amount of "heat" and fail to grow icicles or something! So, I'll update this review when I get it and at least let you all know if mine was truly dead, or if the heat was just that pathetic that I couldn't tell the difference between "on" and "off"! If mine was defective, I'll end up changing my star rating to reflect that. Defects happen, I get it. If that truly is how it works though, my one star rating stays. Happy Holidays and Wishing For Toasty Birdie Toesies! Jemoiselle UPDATE after receiving sanded version of Thermo-perch 11/27/2013: I'll start by saying I ordered the plain version first, size small (for Rosie Bourke Parakeets) and received a defective one along with discovering my birds couldn't stand on it without falling off causing them to absolutely avoid it at all costs. This version is a breath of fresh air! First off, may I say how beautiful it is? We bird owners are familiar with sand perches, you've seen one you've seen them all. Not the case with this perch! It is actually quite beautiful to look at! The sand has many different colors and a variation of different sized granules in it ranging from super fine to tiny pebbles, all glazed in with a very thick shiny coating that doesn't get in the way of the sand being grippy and exfoliating. Certain parts of it even felt a little bit sharp, just like what birds would encounter in the natural world. I'll update if my birdies have any problems with the texture being too sharp for their feet, but I think ultimately they will appreciate something to add some spice to life and for birds in a cage, texture is everything. The first perch didn't turn on, or so I suspected (not knowing how warm this thing would actually be) so I didn't expect much from this one except a very light warmth. Boy was I wrong! Man! That first perch was indeed dead as a door nail because this little baby cranks out enough heat that if birdies could get goosebumps (ironic they call them that!) they would be covered from the moment of first perch . I swear you'd be able to hear them "Ahhhhhh!" Such a wonderful warm perch, I won't be worrying one bit about them as I head upstairs to go to bed from now on. I think the amount of warmth this little perch gives off is staggering, absolutely adequate. I know it is warm enough to keep them all cozy under their "night night blanket" I made for them, too, even if they aren't sitting on it. I highly recommend this perch for anyone now, after returning the first defective non-sanded one and trying out the second. I cannot however, recommend the non-sanded version. The difference is like night and day. Why hello, cozy toes!

Sweet Warm Little Feets
If youโre indecisive? Donโt be! My birds are a pair of Green Cheeks. Not the largest of the conures. They both perch together quite adequately and have really latched on! I bought one and then bought an additional. Michigan. Cold. I also have one of the cuddle up to ones next to where they like to roost at night.

Still waiting for Oscar to accept his new perch
My 22 year old cockatiel, Oscar, is still a bit leary of this new perch which I put in the same place as his prior favorite sleeping perch. He will let me put him on it and stay as long as I am scratching his head but once I stop he steps off to one of his other wooden perches. It has been 4 weeks now and the perch heat is comfortably low. The small size is actually quite big and I don't think a smaller bird would find it comfortable. Also, it is quite smooth and slippery and would be better with a more textured surface like a natural tree branch, which is what Oscar had previously. He slipped around the first time I tried to put him on this perch. Being an older bird, I didn't expect Oscar to accept this perch immediately, but I do hope he does eventually. When he reenters the cage after being out, I noticed that he avoids the thermal perch and has now taken to sleeping on one of the other wooden perches that has a fleece cuddle at one end. I think the thermal perch is a great idea although I think it may need some design improvements. A younger bird may accept is sooner.

Update: it didn't even last a full winter
Ok now the plastic thread to hold it up has snapped ๐ญ what a waste of money, better off buying a cheap one from china, they seem to last longer. Great for sick, injured and lonely avian birds, this size is suitable for a macaw.

Warmth is perfect for your parrots health
I loved this perch because it gave my parrots warmth in winter. It helped with there eating especially in the cold weather and kept their body temperature normal and circulation strong. After much hesitation whether to buy this product was so glad I did my birds just love it and it has helped their health especially in the cold.

Good useful product for my parakeets
I purchased two small K&H Thermo Perches for my 3 parakeets. I only needed one as it is large enough for all 3 but when I get my 4th bird will need the 2nd perch. It is warm to the touch - not hot - and the birds took to it right away. Some reviewers mentioned that it is slippery, but my birds don't show any problems sitting on it. Just make sure the cage is large enough to contain other perches so they have a choice as to whether to use it or not. I'm confident now that the birds will be warm enough as the cold weather approaches and the house unavoidably gets somewhat cooler. Good product!
