Would these work well to build a sturdy temporary work bench? I'm looking for a solution that's portable and can be repurposed for different projects.

After quite a bit of looking and reading, I bought a pair of these sawhorses and once I got them, ordered another pair. I do like them; they are sturdy, well built, and once folded, are easily stored. Some folks like to have wood as the cross-bar; you can add that if you like as there are pre-drilled holes to secure something such as a 2 by 4. I preferred to not do that. As far as building a temporary work bench, it depends on what you are planning on using the workbench for. General things would be ok but beware of stability. I am sure you have thought that through though. I use a solid door to which I have glued a 1/4" piece of high grade plywood and place that across two and sometimes three of the sawhorses. As long as the floor surface is level, the sawhorses will not move. I have used portable routers and cross-cut saws on my portable bench; used them inside the house to lay my flat screen tv across to replace some electronic components; built window screens;  cut sheetrock; even as a surface to feed plywood to a table saw; just about anything that is "general" in nature. I cannot find anything negative to say about them based on the things that I use them for. Some say the metal is flimsy, but again it is a matter of what you will be using them for. Their uses are likely far more demanding than my needs so keep that in mind. Personally, I think you will find them very useful for general work. Order a pair and see what you think; you just might find yourself ordering more. I wish you the best.

I would go with 15.5 lbs each. Mine measure 12 lbs. I added a 2x4 on top with 6 screws and each weighs 15 lbs.
