Heavy duty winch, small but yet powerful, portable and versatile
I bought this Korie great simple winch for controlled pulling/lifting. Takes some muscle and cranking to move, but that's the price you pay for power & control. This winch is constructed with high quality Steel wire rope, the cable of the crank measures 26.2ft, has a safety pawl that allows forward and reverse ratcheting. Since this is a worm gear winch, it takes a lot of cranking to move or lift anything, but it was anyways a great help to my son and husband to get some heavy old metal water pipes out from my son's house that were on his crawl space. It worked like a charm. You can easily left off the handle, installed two nuts tightened together, and operate the winch with a socket on a reversible 3/8' drill, that will make it faster. Overall heavy duty, it does what its supposed to, very happy with my purchase. Very versatile and portable next we are installing it in our truck to load our riding lawn mower straight in the truckโs bed, so we donโt need to use our trailer anymore.

Using to lift my jeep top.
I bought this item to go with ny harken hoist to lift my jeep top (i removed the steel cable and hook and i am using 1/4 poly line). i had to build a custom mount to mount to my wall but once i got that together the lifting and lowering of my top seems so much easier. I have to bypass the safety latch on the hoist to allow the hand winch to lower the load but the winch itself has a reverse so i do not need the safety on the hoist. I wish i was able to move the handle to the opposite side due to location of where i placed it but it works flawlessly. I do strongly encourage you to hold the handle while flipping the pawl to "lower" the load or it will freefall until the pawl engages. There is also a free spool option if you are using this on a stationary item to pull a load an need to walk a distance to the item before hooking up.

Great quality, not perfect design
Great winch, better quality than what you find at big box stores and at a cheaper price. Would buy again. I used it to help raise a 14 gallon gas tank that's gravity fed. My one complaint is the design. The crank turns toward the mounting plate, meaning that you need to have enough clearance behind the winch to turn the handle. In my case, I had to cut a hole in the wall AND build it out with two 2x4s on top of each other to get enough clearance. I wish the design were different so that the handle is adjustable, not as long, or turns on the opposite axis. Not saying I know what the design would be - only that this design makes it difficult to mount in my application.

I'm happy with it
I should have read things a little better, but it doesn't come with mounting bolts. Which is fine, I just had to run to the hardware store and grab 4 lag bolts and then we were up and running! I have a loft above the garage which takes 19 stairs to get up to. We use the loft for storage. Some stuff is too heavy and/or awkward to haul up the stairs, so I put together a pulley with a platform, but it was still too heavy for me to hoist up. So I bought this, and it solved all my problems!! In total I just finished hoisting up (separately) about 1,000 pounds worth of storage stuff to the loft in less than an hour, including a wood smoker we're no longer using. This made my project substantially easier!! My only complaint is, like other reviews read, that getting the lag bolts into the mounting plate was a pain. I had to unravel the cable completely in order to access the top hole. I used lag bolts with 9/16 heads, and found out I couldn't use a deep socket, as it gets wedged between the plate and the bars, so I used a regular socket with an extension. No big deal, just took some finagling! All in all, completely worth the price and I'm happy I have it for future storage needs!!

Dont buy this
The winch let lose as I was launching my boat and destroyed my outdrive. My daughter had wound the boat in a few times and I told her she needed to make sure it was fully latch because when I checked it, it wasn't fully latched. She always said she had latched it. Now I know it wasnt her not latching it, it was the winch malfunctioning.

Locks in forward or reverse (two way)
I built a pulley system in my garage to raise and lower a platform to the ceiling and wanted a hand winch that would lock if your cranking a load up or down with two way action. This one works well for that application. Only thing I didn't like is that I had to do some disassembly of the winch to gain access to the mounting holes but otherwise seems to be functioning fine. Since this is installed in my garage and not exposed to the weather, it will likely not corrode anytime soon.

This hoist must not be used to lift anything. It is very unsafe!
I would have liked to outline something good about this hoist but I cannot. The lowering capstain became inoperative and the load (150 pounds) fell to the floor. Now it can only work lifting and free falling while trying to lower the load. The handle nut fell off during the first try, even though it was properly tightened. The threads were completely stripped. The steel used in this hoist is very cheap. This hoist is very unsafe and it MUST be taken out of the market. Unfortunatelly, since I tried to correct the hoisting gear in order to use it, I cannot return it to the seller.

Little risky to use
It was inexpensive and all I needed to lift a kayak to the ceiling of my garage. Not much of a load, certainly not any where near the 600 pounds claimed by the winch. One aggravating thing was the quirky operation of the winch direction and latching mechanism. It is difficult to set the direction and to lock the winch. If you have a load on and make a change and end up with the wrong setting, you can lose control of the load as the winch unwinds with great gusto. Ouch!
