## Description

One of the world's greatest dramas is turned on its head through a bold, new perspective in Ophelia. Set in medieval Denmark and spoken in a modern tongue with a poetic twist, it recalibrates the classic Shakespearean tragedy of Hamlet so that its unspoken, complex heroine may share her own story. As a rebellious and motherless child, Ophelia (Daisy Ridley, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) is taken into Elsinore Castle by Queen Gertrude (Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive) as one of her most trusted ladies-in-waiting. Soon enough, Ophelia captures the affections of the young Prince Hamlet (George MacKay, Captain Fantastic). In secret, a passionate romance ignites between the two as the kingdom is on the brink of war amidst its own political intrigue and betrayal. When Hamlet's father is murdered, and the prince's wits begin to unravel into an insatiable quest for vengeance, Ophelia sharply navigates the rules of power in Denmark all while struggling to choose between her true love and her own life.Bonus Content:Cast and Crew InterviewsDeleted ScenesTheatrical Trailer

Review: Great movie - This is so good, the dvd plays great. The movie is one of my favorites, the costumes are beautiful, the story is so good too.
Review: Incandescently beautiful, indescribably powerful - This brilliant movie never found the audience it deserved because it dropped in the opening weeks of the pandemic. I feel so lucky that it "dropped" in my lap as I was looking up versions of the famous Ophelia "flower scene." I knew the moment I saw that clip that I would be sharing the movie with my students. I am an English teacher who loves pairing movies with works, especially when the movie offers a fresh look. I cannot praise this brilliant retelling of Hamlet highly enough. Daisy Ridley is incandescent as Ophelia. Full credit to the writers of the novel, of the movie script, and the director for this provocative spin on the world's most famous tragedy. By recentering the story on Ophelia, the entire energy of the play changes, even as they preserve the core tragedy. All of the same people die (with one monumental and self-evident spin) and the same tropes, motifs, polarities, symbols, and themes are in play. Listening to my students deconstruct the movie and its lessons affirms for me just how valuable a "text" it is. What is most radical is also a lesson for our time. By telling the tale through Ophelia's eyes, Hamlet is humanized. To a person, my students voiced empathizing with this movie Hamlet more than the man in Shakespeare's play. So often we're asked to choose between men and women. One of the most toxic narratives we're dealing with right now is that if we lift up one group, we're repressing another. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ophelia opines near the end that not all stories have to end with a sword and bloodshed. She tells Hamlet we can choose a different narrative. Now is the time to embrace this powerful lesson in what that alternative might look like. The production values are through the roof and the actors are fantastic. Daisy Ridley is simply incandescent as Ophelia. She should have won an Oscar. My only complaint is the one I have with nearly all movies now...the sound mixing. Apparently, getting the sound right on a movie is now a lost art. It is very difficult to decode what is being said in several key scenes. I wish someone would go back and take another pass at it becuase you will want to relish every word of this utterly brilliant retelling.
