My new (baking) friend
Solid, not some flimsy thing you buy at the chain stores. It it sharp so be careful when using and cleaning. The one down side is that the serrated end of the core tube does cut into the wood cutting boards so use a board that you don't mind getting marks in or use a plastic board. I think you'll be happy with it - I sure am.

Left with a half-sliced apple
Based on the heft, finish, feel i expected so much of this unit. It has an easy to clean chrome finish, the blades are serrated and sharp to ease cutting, and it has a large diameter and would fit my favorite Braeburn apples! All that and 12 slices had me pretty pumped! In use the unit cut very well and the raised handles made holding it easy. The slice size is perfect for snacking. Unfortunately there are low points. The bottom of the blades are not level with the base and so it does not quite cut all the way through. This left me having to find a way to make the final push-through of the apple without cutting myself. The center coring hole is maybe 3-4 mm too small in diameter for a large apple, meaning a bit of the seed pockets are left on your slices. Lastly, build quality. On about the 12th time using the corer it failed completely; the welds on nearly all the blades broke at once, and the blade assembly came clear out of the inner ring (I posted a pic above). This is unacceptable on a 3 week old tool! Too bad, for all the initial potential it was unable to live up to it.

Didn't Last
After initial use: I was hoping the product would work well both for kids' lunches and pies/cobbler and it does indeed. It is heavy and seems to be very good quality and I expect it'll last for many years of use and bushels of apples. Update: the corer/slicer worked ok for a few months, maybe a dozen good uses or so, and the bonds in the center near the corer gave way. The problem is that when slicing, the center of the blades hit bottom before the body, putting pressure on the welds in the center and causing them to weaken and break. So it didn't last.

This item needs improvements
My wife and I are avid juicers and apples are a staple in our house. The feeder on our juicer is not very big and previous apple slicers we owned created to big of slices to fit the feeder so the 12 slices was attractive. First of all the serrated blades have to go. They defeat too many other design perks and in my opinion do not improve the cutting. The item seemed sturdy when we received it because it's made of heavy stainless steel. I was also attracted by the stainless steel because I did not want to scrub the thing, but the serrated blades defeat that little perk. The convex blade design was a good idea to get through the apple entirely but the serrated blades defeat that idea as well. I think the diameter of the machine should be a bit bigger too. It doesn't fit normal seized apples very good and the corer is also too small. I find seeds and parts of core in my apples every time. And I am not exaggerating about EVERY time. Then I need to break out the paring knife and remove the unwanted leftovers from the slicer which makes me wonder why I purchased one in the first place. Now it sits in the drawer most of the time because of these minor design flaws. This apple slicer had potential, but the product is irritating to use.

Faster and more uniform than knife for more than 1-2 apples
Warning - stick to apples. tried it on a hard quince and slicer literally fell apart I cut peeled and unpeeled apples. Peeled apples cut easily/quickly but did require me to remove a seed pod or 2 per apple. Unpeeled required a little more force to get started through the skin on the top but once through the skin, it flys through the apple. An additional 5 seconds or so is required to poke the bottom skin out of the cutter. Besides speed, uniform slices is the other big plus. Clean up of the cutter took 30 seconds under the faucet. The construction seems pretty good. The blades are spot welded to the handle. All the welds seemed solid so the one I received should cut a lot of fruit. The handle is large enough for my hands (Large) and had a comfortable feel. The blades are saw toothed, which I didn't expect but I can see now how they help to position the cutter on the top of the fruit before pushing down. I will probably use a knife if I am only cutting one apple but will definitely pull this out for more than one.

Apple Slicer
This was ordered to make smaller slices from my apples in pies and cobblers, I have a small gripping problem which makes peeling and slicing with knives is painful and time onsuming, this slicer is a snap and makes the work so much faster not to mention easier. I would recommend it to anyone who needs the job done quickly, and the cuts are uniform. Really like it, and would buy it again. CCB

Yes, the welds do break!
Mine lasted about a year and then all the spotwelds disintegrated. Otherwise it was nice while it lasted. By the way, the simple method so that the slicer goes all the way through the apple is to cut off a thin section at the base of the apple. Then the apple stands nicely, and all the slices are completely cut. If anyone knows of a product like this (all metal, stainless blades, 12 slices etc.) which doesn't fall apart, please comment.
