Many people say the blue and the black look the same, and that nay be true, But Hold them up to the light, and you will see that the blue is more dense than the black. They were also much easier to cut than I anticipated. I used a box cutter and they came out perfectly. I'm anxious to see the effect they have on my filtration. I cut them to size and put them in the filter chambers. Every couple weeks, I know they need changed because the water level creeps up. I remove them, stick them in the clothes washer (quick cycle, cold water, no soap), then rinse them in dechlorinated water and stick them back in the filter chamber. I have a separate chamber for bio balls, so this does not disturb my bio filter. I have been doing this for 1 year now and just returned to purchase more since they are falling apart. I did not expect them to clear the water up so well and I did not expect them to last for so long.
