It is a one piece pitcher, blades are part of the pitcher. It has a lid. Pitcher attaches to the base.

does it blend ice to make a smooth ice product like an italian ice? My wife doesn't want any chunks of ice, will this unit do that?

That said, frozen fruit or ice is no problem for the NutriBullet; however, we recommend keeping frozen ingredients to about 25% of the ingredients in the blender pitcher to allow the ingredients to easily swirl around and come in contact with the blade.
