Welsh is a language to be learned in a classroom...without a face on instructor, trying to assimilate pronunciations, etc. from CD or read text is nigh on impossible for novices.

Trying to cover so many dialectical variants at beginners level is understandable, perhaps, given the linguistic reality, but it just overloads things for those just starting out, at least for those without access to a Welsh speaking community. I remember, before the introduction of Euskera Batua, introductions to Euskera (Basque) focused, in Spain at least, on one of the two major dialects with an appendix or final section that covered the main features of the other one. That seems to me to be a better pedagogical approach. Still, it's a good book.

Probably not the first book you want to look at. Good for learning common speaking patterns after getting basics down but not very helpful for beginners.

I was disappointed that there is a CD to go with the book and I wasn't prompted to order it at the same time.
