Does the sword have plastic core in the middle to hold the shape?

Yes, as of 2020 they have a inner core from the handle to mid foam blade.

Can this sword be used in combat?

These swords are perfect to fend for the princesses honour. They fight dragons, unicorns that go bad and even the occasional series of bands. Be careful though, you maybe called into battle with the evil queen. But they have more power than any witch.

are these made out of the same kind of foam as the kind used for pool noodles?

The foam is denser I believe than the noodles. Our grandson beats up on his grandpap in their sword battles and they amazing are still holding strong (the swords that is)

Are these 17" including the handle?

Yes. We bought them for a Den of Cub Scouts, to entertain them whenever camping or fishing or any other activity slows down, and they are VERY popular with the boys. And they have all survived almost a year of "combat," with the only damage being a couple of the handguards coming loose on the backend. They were repaired with Crazy Glue, and fight on.
