Just press the Boost Button to start from your accessory battery. The batteries will remain connected for one minute so that you can start the Jeep and begin charging the cranking battery. Smart Isolator Technology The smart isolator connects the batteries when it senses the cranking battery at 13.2V for two minutes, giving your accessories the most run time possible. Once the isolator senses the cranking battery reaches 12.7V the batteries are disconnected, protecting the cranking battery from further drain. Here's how it works When your cranking battery is fully charged at 13.2 volts, the smart isolator automatically connects the batteries together, and they are charged at the same time. When you park and turn off the engine, but continue to use accessories such as lights or the stereo or a CB, both batteries begin to drain down. When your main cranking battery reaches 12.7 volts, the smart isolator separates the batteries, so that your cranking battery will have enough power to start the engine. The second battery continues to power your accessories for as long as it will last. Any accessories connected to the power and ground bus bars will run from the accessory battery. Your factory fuse box will still be powered by the main cranking battery. After you crank the vehicle, your main cranking battery will be charged up to 13.2 volts first, and then the isolator will begin charging your accessory battery. By only charging one battery at a time, your alternator is protected from excessive strain. What if your cranking battery is somehow drained down too low to be able to start the vehicle? However, if you have the ESS on your Jeep (which if you have a JL you have it) the mechanism will cause the ESS to cycle through 6 times and then it gets disabled. The owner tells me that it is a design by FCA and even at stock the ESS only cycles through 6 times. There is no evidence of that claim I have been able to find and others I have spoken with who drive a stock JL have not had that experience-I have owned my JL for 15 months and ESS cycled through as many times as needed even in a stop and go traffic. The 6 cycle limit claim is suspect...
