I don't believe so but you should review the manufacture's website. My recollection is they talk at some lengthy about how and where they source their materials as an overall explanation for their slightly higher MSRP. Here's a snipptet: Not all Ferro/Flint is created equal. Most flint found in the market, used by many of the biggest brands, is subpar. The average product contains low-grade flint from China. Chinese flint is only 17% rare earth metal and as much as 20% of the flint is plastic. We source our flint directly from Europe. European flint creates a large shower of sparks, allowing you to start your fire with ease! More rare earth metals = better. Our fire starters are 76% rare earth metal. In any case I've been thoroughly happy with mine. It's easier to handle than other ferro rods & strikers that strive so hard to be packable and "small" that they are nearly impossible to "use". This one is easy to grip and throws sparks like the 4th of july. The addition of the magnesium is a nice touch too.

Is the handle made of wood?

Yes, the handle is made of African hard wood. The wood contains resin that makes it water resistant - we did a test where the fire starter was submerged in water for 4 days and successfully lit a fire within 30 seconds after coming out of the water. Also the handle wood can be scraped and used as tinder - even after being soaked in water for 4 days! At times we have purchased an entire tree and the wood color varies from tan to deep red. Also the edge wood looks like oak - so sometimes there is a "calico" effect where the red color is next to the oak color.
