Bit of a Yawn
3.5 Stars: Beside You In Time is Nine Inch Nails' 2nd Live DVD release; and in my opinion, they should've waiting to release another one until at least 1 or 2 more albums have passed by. I think he did it just to "even up" the Halo numbers. (maybe not, just a thought)When compared to the other (And All That Could Have Been), this one falls way short. Yes, it has special features - but most of which are available on other NIN releases - & if you're a collector like me, you already have that stuff. The Concert as a whole wasn't up to par in regard to the AATCHB dvd either. A lot of the stuff seemed either ackward or forced (between the members) - mostly due to an all new band (a huge mistake in my opinion, for more reasons than I care to go into here). And the production value of the concert wasn't as good either. (I don't mean the quality of the DVD, I mean the quality of the lights, effects, overall stage presence, etc.)Add to all this, that unless you're a HUGE fan of the With Teeth album - there's really no point in getting this. Aside from the With Teeth songs, the other few songs (''fan favorites'') can obviously be found on their last DVD -- which by the way is 2 discs, has a huge assortment from each album (not just 1 or 2 fan favs. from each) (plus the hidden material/songs). I personally only liked a couple songs from With Teeth & bought this DVD only because it cost $12, & for my "collection" (which I'm giving serious thought to selling!)Also, it's noteworthy enough to mention... but I fell asleep(!) while watching this (trying to watch this) twice. Took me 3 tries to get all the way through it... it just didn't "pull you in" like the AATCHB DVD did... and the live performaces / songs of the tracks I didn't like from the album... were even worse live --- where usually it's the other way around w/ NIN! I've not liked songs of theirs before, saw or heard it live... and for whatever reason, stage presence, attitude, whatever -- made me like a particular song. Totally not the case here...If you're not a fan of a lot of the With Teeth tracks -- your mind wont be changed after viewing this & should save your money. If you're a NIN collector, you'll buy this no matter what anyone says - and are probably giving me a "not helpful" click right now just for badmouthing a NIN release... but, at least I'm being honest & not just here promoting a release I don't like, simply because it's NIN.

A Truly High Definition Experience
I have been a huge Nine Inch Nails since I was a teenager. NIN has changed over the years and evolved alongside me. Though some of the angst of previous years is gone, NIN has never sounded better. A great HD follow-up to And All That Could Have Been (another excellent live DVD.)Even if you do not typically enjoy NIN, there is no better way to test or enjoy a good surround set up. I recently finished installing a high quality 7.1 THX surround setup and used this Blu-Ray to configure and test. There is a great optimization/test feature on the disc that allows you to ensure every channel is operating properly. Once configured, the concert pushes your system to the limit. The audio is perfectly mixed and the video is crystal clear. Trent Reznor is a perfectionist and it shows how expertly crafted and recorded this experience is. It's hard to replicate the feeling of being at a concert but this is as close as you can get to experiencing NIN Live at the comfort of your couch. The track list is an updated version of AATCHB swapping some tracks from The Fragile for some from With Teeth. While WT is not my favorite album, the tracks here are standouts from that album. All of the favorites from past albums remain though and Trent trades some of the emotion from previous years for precision. A lot changed for Trent between The Fragile and With Teeth; getting sober and learning how to deal with past insecurities along with maturation and aging has led to a loss of some of the anger previous releases have had. Trent is still far from a bright and sunny person but you can tell he is no longer caught in a downward spiral of self destruction. Trent went from a skinny junkie looking guy to a meat head looking guy. My only complaint about this and all modern performances is the constant interjections of "YEAH!" "HEY!" and "Come On!" between verses. It is distracting and annoying. Otherwise Trent who has never been a traditionally good singer has gotten quite good at refining his voice. While his screaming is less frequent and believable, his voice is better than ever. All in all this is highly recommended to NIN fans, audiophiles, and anyone who wants to experience a truly High Definition audio/visual experience.

Buy it for the surround sound mix alone!
First things first, I hope this review is going back to the seller - and maybe it is not - but as a Prime member for years, I promise you this used disc got to me ALMOST as quickly! So kudos. This was one of those occasions (as happens far too often) where I was looking for this disc when the NIN tour was announced and of course ... couldn't find it because I know I let a friend borrow it and yet they claim they didn't. This was also one of those occasions where if I just waited a day, I wouldn't even care to watch this thing. That said, I did not ... but I said ... you know what, I'll go used! So go used I did, the disc insanely shipped THAT NIGHT (late) and got to me in 3 days which includes a Sunday so kudos to you seller. About the disc ... if you love NIN, buy it for the surround sound mix alone ... all of his records should be mixed in this format and this gives you that. Visual production is NOT his best - but so what, Something I Can Never have and Burn are on it ... what more do you need?

ALMOST LIKE BEING THERE
While no live dvd or cd can ever recreate the experience of being at a concert, 'Beside you in time' does a good job of reminding you the last time you saw nin live.Recorded during the 'With Teeth' world tour it features the winter leg of the tour which is the main part of the dvd, it also features the summer tour and that now famous light show. The line up has completely changed since the last live release 'All That Could Have Been' but it doesn't suffer one bit, in fact they add to it especially on 'Closer', which has all new guitar parts added to it and a breakdown featuring 'the only time'. Three of the songs 'right where it belongs', 'beside you in time' and 'eraser' all feature a multiple angle option similar to the one that was included on nine inch nails last live dvd release 'all that could have been'. This option is a nice addition and well worth using as the three songs have great visuals. Tho only disappointing thing is the version of 'hurt' which has been changed to sound more like Johnny Cash's version in doing so it loses some of its original charm.Unlike the last live release there is plenty of extras with rehearsal footage of three with teeth songs, as well as the videos from with teeth 'only' and 'the hand that feeds' both of which are mixed in 5.1 sound. There is also a body of work feature that is handy for people new to nine inch nails or for people to see whats missing from their collection. So put this dvd on while you wait to see nin live, and to really add to the experience get someone to stand in front of the tv!

The best
Nine inch nails are the best live group too ever roam the planet, Trent Rezner is just a genius to have written, played and the instruments and produced all his albums and he's got such brilliant musicians to play on the tours is pure genius as wel. The energy that's that produced from theses guys playing is electrifying and I'm very surprised that the roof and the crowed are not blown away. Just buy this bluray the picture quality and the sound are amazing, then anything to do with Trent Rezner will be that way. Over all this is just an amazing concert, buy it and be amazed and prepare for the hairs on the back of you kneck to stand on end .

Beside You In Time
5 stars does not do this DVD justice. From the opening song "Love Is Not Enough" to the epic finale "Head Like a Hole", Nine Inch Nails show in this DVD exactly what they are capable of. Songs like "Eraser", "The Big Come Down" and "With Teeth" are really nice surprises to the setlist, and regular concert favourites such as "Closer", "Hurt" and "The Hand That Feeds" make this DVD something that will appeal to new NIN fans and old ones too.The mid-concert trio of songs ("Eraser", "Right Where It Belongs" and "Beside You In Time") bring a real sense of calm, just like "La Mer, The Great Below" and "The Mark Has Been Made" did in the first live DVD "And All That Could Have Been". This acts as a healthy contrast to the sheer energy given off for the rest of the concert.Long live NIN and roll on year zero!

A Solid Performance
As a followup to the previous live dvd, 'And All That Could Have Been', 'Beside You In Time' was always going to be as good, or better than before. The only things that could have held this DVD back from its predecessor is Trent's live performance, which we all know is astounding. Reznor is a brilliant vocalist, almost every live track could have been the recorded version, and his backing band is equal to that. Aaron's insane guitar techniques keep the stage moving faster than greyhounds at a race track, not to mention the incredible drumming by Freese. There are great tracks on this DVD, primarily taken from the With Teeth album, with oddities from The Fragile, The Downward Spiral, and Pretty Hate Machine all contributing to the overall effect. Which is, I might add, very good. The extras are worth the purchase in themselves, to see tracks like Love is Not Enough, and recent single Everyday is Exactly the Same played live, and the recent music videos up for your viewing pleasure. And to wrap up, the dvd packaging is very nice. And also available in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats for the luckier among us. Making this package a worthwhile investment for hardcore-fans and avid rock listeners alike.
