Jim Dunlop Flow Jumbo Grip 4.20mm Guitar Picks (547P4.20)

Having played over 40 years, I've pretty much tried everything, including handmade custom picks. These are now my go to pick for acoustic and electric guitar. Here's why: 1. Rigidity: Many years ago I learned that rigid picks are the only way to go if you want to be able to pick fast and accurately. It's all about feedback: any flex reduces your connection. So for many years my minimum was 2mm, so clearly at 4.2mm, these fit the bill. 2. Fat picks reduce strain. A revelation to me was when I tried a custom 8.4mm pick: it was simply easier to hold. This is basic ergonomics, but was very counterintuitive. While I still have and use that monster, through experimentation I found that 4mm was the sweet spot between ease of grip and thinness to navigate string separation. 3. Microdot grip: the bane of many a guitarist is a pick slipping out of position between your finger and thumb. While custom picks address this with drill holes, the microdots on this pick seem dimensioned to interlock with the grooves of your fingerprint, resulting in a "lock" that is close to magnetic and the best I've ever encountered. 4. Ultex: so far, in my experience, this is the best composite produced for guitar yet. Hard-wearing, light, with a feel and tone comparable to real tortoiseshell, this material is simply the best I've tried. 5. Shape: the graduated point of this pick, inherited from the venerable Dunlop Jazz pick, gives the perfectly predictable and clean string release required for accurate and clear note articulation. In this case, the sculpting is perfect not only along the flat plane of the pick, but also across the cross-section, giving effortless sweeps and alternate picking. 6. Size: this is probably the most personal aspect. I prefer this size, but for those of you accustomed to the smaller Jazz pick size, this may be too big. 7. Price: having paid upto £30 for custom handmade picks, these are actually really good value for money and actually outperform those more expensive picks, largely due to the Ultex material and the microdots. 8. Aesthetics: who doesn't like a translucent forest green pick with "420" incribed in the middle? 😉 Overall, these picks work perfectly across nickel, steel and even nylon strings, giving a clear and beautiful tone. I've now built up a stock of 50+ of these and use them exclusively for all instruments other than bass or some some of my more narrow-coursed instruments (e.g. laud, where I use 2mm Ultex). They are that good.

Possibly the best pick I have used in over 20 years of playing. These picks are absolutely amazing. If you want to have precise picking for lead playing then this is a must buy! They will add a massive boost to the volume on your pick attack too. I wish they made them in a polished version too. You can always polish them up yourself like I have with mine :)

Picks are very much a personal preference thing, these are chunky but feel good. The only slight negative was the moulding point needed smoothing otherwise no complaints.

It's awesome! It's huge! A wee bit too huge in fact, to allow any kind of precise playing, but that's not really what it's for, surely? This is just for keeping in your pocket so you can feel AWESOME any time. Pack of 2, by the way, in case you thought that a tenner was far too much to pay for awesome.

Really like the feel and the grip on this things. Textured just enough for even cold hands to keep a good enough grip. But pick thickness is a personal preference from person to person. This thing will last though so long as you don't loose it

One of the best pics I have ever used! It makes playing consecutively palm muted notes at rapid pace light work and brings excellent aggression for playing metal songs. I haven’t dropped it once, the trip is amazing!!!

Well, holy-moley - 4.2mm thick picks, eh!? These were a bit of a departure for me as an electric guitarist, but I'm a massive fan of the 3mm version, so gave these a try and after a short adjustment time I’ve found they're really really good - the fatness of the pick with the smooth tapering bevel at the tip means these really do glide over the strings for great fast picking. They FEEL great in your fingers and the grippy bits are just perfect. You can really dig in with these big chunky fellas if you want to, but they can be so delicate and precise too. I find myself alternating between the 3mm version and these big chungus 4.2mm bad boys as my plecs of choice these days (jeez, I used to use, like, 0.5mm thick picks in my youth... weird how we can change over time, eh) - I’d say have an open mind and try these out - u might likes 'em as much as I do! Bit pricey, ent they, but like L’Oreal, you’re worth it, girlfriend!

Jag som har nervskador och är svag i höger hand då jag ska greppa plektrum tycker detta plektrum är kanon. Är mer avslappnad i hand och handled då det är mer ergonomiskt och enkelt att greppa bra pga. Dess tjocklek.

This is an outstanding pick for bass. Due to its thickness it doesn't have a very sharp attack, but you can still dig in a bit with it if you want. If you're looking for a bass pick for high speed playing, this is one of the best. It's smooth enough to glide over the strings very well: Only the Dunlop Big Stubby is better in that regard in my experience. The sheer mass of this pick is sufficient to not get impeded by bass strings, making fast passages much easier to do. It does take a bit of getting used to, but it's well worth it. If I had to use only one pick for bass, this would be it.
