A unique and irreplacable part of our worldwide coffee heritage, Liberica is an entirely separate species of coffee. Its almond-shaped beans have an exceptional aroma, almost floral and fruity, while its flavor is full and slightly smokey. As of 1995 Liberica had essentially vanished, and was brought back from extinction by a concerted effort in the Philippines. Our Liberica coffee comes from several mountains in the Philippines. Mt. Halcon in Mindoro is home to the poetic and peace-loving indigenous Mangyan tribes. This direct-trade coffee supports these tribes. The extraordinary taste of the “world's fourth coffee species” is unfamiliar today in the USA, yet at one time dominated the coffee trade in the Pacific and was the base of many fine coffees around the world in the middle of the 20th century. Truly a unique experience, Liberica is the most stable coffee species, ripening in the cup for a mellower taste and keeping well even after brewing. Low in caffeine, medium roast. Roasted weekly and vacuum-packed in foil vented bags.
