It's definitely harder for them, but 6 of my 8 cats have no problem at all getting most of the treats out, and then taking more time to get the last ones. The toy itself is pretty sturdy. My kitties are determined - and destructive - and so far, this one is standing up to them. (For the record, so does the original. These suckers are well made!) You can put treats or even pieces of dry food in here, but for every day feeding I would recommend a slow feeder bowl. This way your cat will still be forced to eat slowly and then you can periodically set this up on the side as a mental exercise. Eating too fast can be a health risk (especially if it induces vomiting) and comes from the cat's ability to self-regulate. This is a easily fixable issue with the slow feeder and not something you can necessarily "train out of them."
