A comprehensive study of the Eastern slave trade by an eminent British scholar A companion volume to The Black Diaspora , this groundbreaking work tells the fascinating and horrifying story of the Islamic slave trade. Islam's Black Slaves documents a centuries-old institution that still survives, and traces the business of slavery and its repercussions from Islam's inception in the seventh century, through its history in China, India, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, and Spain, and on to Sudan and Mauritania, where, even today, slaves continue to be sold. Ronald Segal reveals for the first time the numbers involved in this trade--as many millions as were transported to the Americas--and explores the differences between the traffic in the East and the West. Islam's Black Slaves also examines the continued denial of the very existence of this sector of the black diaspora, although it survives today in significant numbers; and in an illuminating conclusion, Segal addresses the appeal of Islam to African-American communities, and the perplexing refusal of Black Muslim leaders to acknowledge black slavery and oppression in present-day Mauritania and Sudan. A fitting companion to Segal's previous work, Islam's Black Slaves is a fascinating account of an often unacknowledged tradition, and a riveting cross-cultural commentary.

A valuable library addition for anyone interested in a more complete understanding of Islam. Essential. My 2nd copy.
The best of very little scholarly research in this area of Islamic history - bits and pieces drawn together into a coherent, readable whole. It will be an eye-opener for most amateur students of Islam. An equivalent study of "other" slaves, white, Indian, etc. is needed, the number of such slaves probably exceeding the eye-popping number of back slaves.I have wondered if a Fatwa has been issued against the author; there were several million more black slaves in Islam than were shipped to the new world.

A very good historical account of a subject all too neglected
A very good historical account of a subject all too neglected! In an age where the West is made out to be the worst culprit in the insidious African slave trade the focus finally comes upon Islams evil role in this heinous and insidious practice? This is a very needed supplement to get a full and balanced account of one of the great evils in human history! Well written and documented. No serious historian should be without a copy.

The Other Half of the Slave Trade
The White Men did not invent the slave trade, but in fact grafted their trading activity on a secular practice, condonned by the Kuran that allows Muslims to enslave infidels. The result is that about the same number of African people have been exported as slaves to the Middle East and further on in Asia as there were victims of the four-century long Atlantic slave trade. This book provides rich and convincing historical evidence on that eastern trade. Two big issues remain to be analyzed nowadays: (i) what were the impact of the other slave trading that took place in historical times (e.g., the capture and export to Asia of pagan Slav peasants by the Vikings in the Middle Ages), and (ii) how to fight the continuation of slave raiding in Central Sudan and elsewhere for feeding the Middle Eastern market (e.g., Darfur)?Jean-Paul Azam, professor of economics.

slavery
This book s a companion volume to the authors first book "The Black Diaspora"which dealt with Christianitys black slavery from west Africa to north America and deals with Islams black slaves from east Africa to the middle and far east. While slavery under Islam far predates western slavery it continues today in countries such as Mauretania and Sudan. However Islams slaves did not meet such barbarity as Christianitys did as they were mainly servants, soldiers or sexual partners and were more likely to eventually be freed.Well written and researched and recorded in a frank and neutral manner.A thought provoking book.
