how does this detect lightning? is it a radio-based detection? how accurate is it? can it be thrown off by EM interference, such as a powerful radio?

As far as I know lightning produces a signal at a certain frequency. I think it is 500 Khz. Yes the detector does pick up interference and will show it as such but will not log it as a strike on your HD display. Since it will detect any strike within a 40 Km radius you may not be aware of it and think it is interference. I do get the odd interference and it could be an electric motor start, cell phone or the neighbor's car ignition, maybe even an amateur radio station. Earlier models of detector had a problem but that has been fixed by Acurite.

Question 4

Where on the monitor does the lighting strike notification show? The screen looks pretty full, I don't see a space where a  would appear.

Lightning information will be displayed in the bottom-center of the display above the indoor temperature and humidity. You will see a red banner appear with the number of strikes and the last distance recorded.
