Can this Sheepette be cut for custom fitting or will it fall apart?

It has a woven backing which could be cut to custom fit. You would want to bind it when done to keep it from raveling or the pile from coming out. It could easily be done on a serger or with bias tape.

Does the stiff backing soften up any after it is washed?

It's very soft right out of the package But you may want to wash it by itself as some of the fuzz from the edges do's come off while washing. But not much. I highly recommend them! I'm bed ridden and sweat alot in the summer due to lack of A/C and was getting bed sore's from that. I have not had a single one since I bought these and pland on buying more of them. You will love them!

I discarded the packaging, then discovered that no laundry instructions were attached to the pad. What do the package instructions say?

I did not find any laundry instructions and have not had occasion to wash the item. I plan to use a gentle cycle and watch carefully while drying.
