A spade (at least the ones I've used) has a full-sized handle (meaning if the blade is resting on the ground the handle comes up to a height somewhere between your belly and chest) and rather than coming to a point - the end of the blade is straight (square). I use a trowel to dig small holes and I use a spade when I want a straight edge instead of a point (cutting out squares of sod, for example).
