A MUST Read!
I first listened to this book on audio from the library, then I ordered it from Amazon! I felt I needed to have the text in my hand! That should be enough of an indicator for why you ought to buy a copy! This is a Must Read if you're interested in what you eat and put in your body! Peter Singer is such an excellent writer! This was a real eye opener for me. There is also a bit of humor in it, for example, when he goes dumpster diving. Our food choices matter not only to our health but also for the future of our planet! Enjoy! I know that you will not be disappointed!

Excellent
This is a great non judgemental look at our food industry. They follow the daily diets of three different families, tracing several of their food choices back to where the products originated. They look at America's food choices from many perspectives and provide valuable information. The end of the book has must-have references to hundreds of websites and other helpful tools to make this book a staple in anyones library.

Thorough and thought provoking
I've been checking out audiobooks from the library to make my commute time go by faster. Since I've enjoyed books like In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto and What to Eat this book sounded like it would be up my alley so I picked it up on a whim. I'm glad I did because it is perhaps the best book on food ethics I've ever read (or more accurately, listened to). Even if you've read other books on the subject this book still provides even more to learn. In The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter Singer and Mason explore the consequences of our food choices. They do so both through general investigation on the subject as well as by researching the origins of the food eaten by three different families. The families are diverse including one eating the standard American diet, one considering themselves 'Conscious Omnivores,' and the last a vegan family. Using the familes as examples makes the stories very personal and engaging to read. Overall I really liked the format and content of this book and found that although it was really thorough it didn't drag on or feel repetitive. I was always curious about what I would find out next. What sets this book apart from so many is the level of detail. You can tell that the book is very well researched. It sites not only a lot of medical studies and articles but also includes personal accounts of the farms, factories, etc. that were visited by the authors. Because of this it is easy to trust that what they have written is true.I also appreciated the thoroughness of the arguments presented. I've often thought about what impact my eating habits have on the environment and the welfare of animals, but the authors present many more considerations. They also demonstrate that eating ethically is not as straightforward as one might think and that there are many factors to weigh and consider. Their general principles are not absolute ones and they conclude by telling the reader to do the best they can within his or her means, which I appreciated. It is also worth noting that the tone of this book is not anti-omnivore. They do strongly encourage omnivores to consider their decisions and whenever possible to visit the producers of their animal products. However, it doesn't come across that anyone who cannot be a strict diet is ignorant and evil. This made me find the tone very balanced and not at all accusatory or hyperbolic.Overall this is a great book. I cannot say enough good things about it. Even having read other food ethics books it further enhanced my knowledge of the subject and gave me a lot to think about. I feel like a much more enlightened consumer having read this book. Highly recommended!

Philosophical, not preachy
I enjoyed the book. It was not an easy read, but the authors do make a great case for why our food choices matter. I did like the way it looked at the food choices of three families and then looked at the foods and the process to get them to the table. It also gives the pros and cons to food choices and says based on those and our values, we should make our dietary choices. I felt it was very thorough.
